So my dh started throwing up at midnight last night and had a fever of 38.5, he threw up 3 times in the night but no diarrhea (sp?). I've bleached the toilet, taps and door handles (wearing rubber gloves which have been thrown out) plus thrown out mine and ds toothbrushes plus dh has washed his hands after every throw up. What are the chances of me and ds catching it? If you can't already tell I'm phobic of vomiting but I also can't take any time off work this week as my boss is on holiday and I'm running the shop on my own. Please give me good statistics.

Oh I forgot to add my dh never usually gets diarrhea with bugs anyway this is not abnormal for him he must have bowels of steel. Last time we all had it 2 years ago he did not poop once yet I was sat on the loo for the same 24hrs. Food wise we had sausages last night that were tried for the first time supposedly fat free, I only ate 2 bites because I found them to be very rubbery but dh ate 5 (yes 5, he's a gorb). We don't know anyone who's ill and haven't heard of the bug going round our area either.

Thank you, I'm in Northern Ireland. I did hear some people saying family members were sick around mid June time (few kids and grandkids of co-workers) but nothing since then. Maybe he's the starter of it in our area lol. He's feeling a lot better already just weak and tired from being up all night and his temp seems to be coming bk to normal but I just cannot risk me or ds catching it!!

OP posts:
Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:09

Did you catch it despite bleaching and hand washing?

OP posts:
Balancingact12 · 05/08/2018 12:11

Yep we had it a couple of weeks ago .. apart from me I somehow managed to avoid it Grin though that meant I was the point of contact to clean up everyone’s sickness Hmm

LighthouseSouth · 05/08/2018 12:12

he ate 5 of them? could be those?

I thought you were going to say you were in London - I'm phobic and was expecting an outbreak because of so many people gathering together in stupidly hot weather.

sounds unlikely to actually be noro but you might not get it anyway.

Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:23

balancingact thankfully he can make it to the loo and clean up after himself, I just bleached to try and kill off the invisible bastards. If ds gets it though I will be exposed all over again (he's only 3 so not great with hygiene and puts his hands in his mouth for all sorts of unknown reasons!).

OP posts:
Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:25

lighthousesouth yes he ate 5 fucking sausages, 2 of them were mine that I didn't finish, he cooked them for us as he does all our meals and has never poisoned any of us in 10 years lol but do you not think I'd show any symptoms from having 2 bites?

OP posts:
Balancingact12 · 05/08/2018 12:26

There has actually been an outbreak of it in NI but from what I’ve seen seems to clear up within 48 hours... but it’s a hard 48 hours Sad

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 05/08/2018 12:28

In London with a sickness thing that started around 11pm last night. I’m putting it down to germs in this weather. No one else had it yet but it’s early doors.

Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:34

balancingact12 oh really? I'm in Belfast and haven't heard a thing. (normally I keep my ears open for these things since I'm phobic). I will really struggle to get cover for work if I catch it, that's my main concern.

OP posts:
Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:36

reggiekraydoyouknowmyname oh dear sounds similar to my dh then. I always thought gastro type bugs were autumn/winter time bugs. Trying to think where my husband could have caught it but nothing obvious springs to mind.

OP posts:
LighthouseSouth · 05/08/2018 12:36

OP if there was anything wrong with the sausages, your DH will have ingested a lot more of it, IYSWIM.

Reggie, sorry to hear that. I do feel like the same factors that cause Noro in winter are prevalent now in our current conditions - too many people gathered together in the same places etc - so I have been expecting to hear of an outbreak any minute. Grr.

Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 12:48

lighthousesouth oh he definitely consumed a mammoth amount more than me. I've never had food poisoning in my life (thank God) so I wasn't sure if even 2 bites would not be enough to make me slightly ill.

OP posts:
bluerunningshoes · 05/08/2018 12:53

poor food hygiene around bbq and summerheat is a thing - which leads to food poisonings, some of which can be contagious via the excrements...

bluerunningshoes · 05/08/2018 12:55

what I wanted to say is: not all episodes of d&v are noro virus.

smurfy2015 · 05/08/2018 12:58

@Nogodsnomasters here is the Belfast trust advice, the "winter" vomiting bug is a misnomer,

I had noro this weekend last year. I thought it had to be winter but a&e reassured me it can happen all year around but is much more common in winter. Im also in NI.

www.belfasttrust.hscni.net/hospitals/NorovirusWinterVomitingDiseaseFAQ.htm

I have a shedload of medical problems anyhow and it was dehydration which made my migraines worse to the point I was numb all over and needed medical assessment, I felt a lot better after a couple of bags of saline. But I had to be isolated while in a&e which was a pain in the ass for them

www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/health/norovirus-bug-outbreak-spreading-across-12933740

smurfy2015 · 05/08/2018 13:09

I had got to the point where I couldn't sit upright to use the loo and couldn't keep even ice lollies down. That was over the 48-hour mark for me. *TMI ahead) Diarrhoea had irritated me so much as was violent that I was also bleeding from the back end, like a heavy period which was staining everything as I sat down. My chest and ribs also hurt from vom and then dry retching when nothing was left.

@bluerunningshoes totally agree that not all episodes of d&v are norovirus

It hadn't actually occurred to me at the time to consider norovirus but it was the extra stuff on top of d&v that lead me to local a&e as it needed to be checked out.

If I was to have same again, I would stay home as it will pass and only go if something severe changed as a&e having to isolate makes it tricky for the next patient

OPs DH hang on in there,

ice lollies to get fluids in and paracetamol for temp, even take liquid paracetamol if might be easier than swallowing tablets and bringing them back up

Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2018 13:32

Thanks smurf he has had 2 ice lollies and hasn't thrown up since 3.15am so I think the worst is over him. All I care about now is me and ds not catching it (as awful as that sounds but dh is a big boy and I sat up til 4am with him lol).

OP posts:
smurfy2015 · 05/08/2018 16:17

Totally understand, I have carers who come into my house 4 times a day the carers are due to the shedload of medical problems and as soon as it started as with any bug I get, they go into full PPE (gloves, aprons, shoe covers and masks as necessary) as I can often be unable to get out of bed unassisted and well you can guess the mess.

I'm incontinent anyhow so everything is stepped up as the bed is usually just wet and me and bed mats and extra pad changes,

I need help to change as at times I can be completely dependent on those angels/carers as they have spoon fed me when needed and only one has ever been awkward but she is generally like that with people (outside her work)

smurfy2015 · 05/08/2018 16:35

Get him a bell to warn you if he is coming near you, shouting unclean. Encourage him to keep getting liquids in. He won't feel like drinking but a sip every 2-3 minutes doesn't sound much for an adult but it helps a lot. Not a large drink as very high chance of stomach rejecting it in protest at having to deal with being flooded, small sips little and very often.

If he starts wanting food later B.R.A.T (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-BRAT-Diet with tips of what to add after those so he is getting nutrition but not causing a revolt but avoiding food till active vom is over is best and then slowly tiny bits again

Leave DH to sort himself out if he is ill again, he is an adult. Tissues, spare toilet roll if needed, maybe a basin, saucepan or bucket if you are feeling kind. The saucepan will be ok after a hot wash. I have one designated as my puke pot. Plug his mobile in beside him so that if he gets a lot worse suddenly (but hope not) and you are in other room he can call you if needed,

if possible can you sleep in the room with DS tonight esp if he is young,

Before bed, layer up the bed with puppy pads/inco pads if you can get them, pad and fitted sheet and several layers. In case he is sick too and ends up vomiting or lower end - the pads are disposable and puppy pads are far cheaper than everything else and only slightly smaller than the much more expensive inco pads. Then he only needs to have the pad and possibly sheet pulled off and into a basket and bin bag in the bathroom and back to sleep. Not a massive changing of the bed procedure and you get back to sleep.

For you, you will need sleep. DH will have what he needs in your bedroom and you concentrate on keeping yourself far away and also your DS as its bloody miserable being sick and best to avoid it for you and your DS sake, too late atm for your DH

LighthouseSouth · 05/08/2018 21:39

@smurfy2015

I feel for you, hope you're feeling better. Flowers

Nogodsnomasters · 06/08/2018 08:36

smurfy ds and I slept on the sofa last night as it pulls out into a bed, there just wouldn't be enough room in ds bedroom for us both without me having to sleep on floor. I played it as a "sleepover" with ds. Dh was not sick once yesterday and only ate ice pops nothing else. Still no bowel movements he actually says he feels bunged up instead of the other which is weird to me!! We all slept for 10 hours last night which was massively needed.

This morning dh says he still feels 20% nauseous and his fever is definitely gone now. I suppose I just have to wait it out a few more days to see if ds or I catch it, I've done everything in my power. The beds were stripped this morning using rubber gloves and thrown into a boil wash along with everything dh has worn this weekend. And we all have separate towels. I guess now it's just down to pure luck!

@LighthouseSouth thank you. I just take it as it goes as this has been constant for 8+ years now so it's kinda my normal now. I got used to it because I had to, I do have difficult days mentally at times.

@Nogodsnomasters you are not going to believe this, a migraine hit me yesterday evening and I got 4 hours sleep as it knocked out my sight so I had to just relax and let it wash over. I finished antibiotics on Friday and my bowels have been putting up a small protest during and a couple of times after finishing.

Till around 2.30am then hell broke loose with my body, I now have violent D+V fully put it down to after the antibiotics combined with a migraine, My bed is layered up with pads and sheets, I have a jug of water with weak dilute in it and I'm sipping. I have a Tesco order for later for the rest of "active sick shopping list"

Fever is dying down a bit at the minute as I take paracetamol 4 times a day as normal anyhow so it's helping a bit but I have fan heater/cooling fan sitting on standby so can turn whats needed quickly

A friend is picking up ice lollies for me later in the local shop to keep me going till Tesco evening delivery. Bin has been placed in the hallway for all PPE, so it is put on entering the house and leaving.

If still ill like this on Thursday, I will contact the GP surgery or something major changes otherwise I will sit/sleep it out as best I can.

Hope you avoid it and your DS too. Antibacterial spray the door handles, around switches, remote controls, toilet flush and other small items which you all touch in a normal day.
