Thrush - foods to avoid please...

I have been trying to eat more healthily recently but have a feeling I have an attack of thrush now. I've been starting my day with grapefruit and porridge then snacking on fruit smoothies - I do feel the better for it generally but have a feeling the natural sugar in the fruit is to blame - am I right??

i always thought the natural sugar was a problem too. Have you tried probiotics (the strong capsule sort from health food shops, not the yogurt in the supermarkets)? I take them regularly now and they make me feel generally more healthy. They may only help thrush after using antibiotics though.

hjscho · 31/05/2007 14:10

Didn't really answer your question there...sorry.

multitasker · 31/05/2007 14:15

I'm going to look in the supermarket or health food shop for a probiotic tomorrow. It's so hard to get the balance right isn't it.

currently I am running my [[http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=330112&stamp=070531141217 detox thread] which is entirely aimed at getting rid of my thrush

but broadly, anything with sugar or yeast in it (so that includes wholemeal bread and booze )

the madman who wrote my detox book also says that animal-based dairy is best avoided if you get a lot of thrush but he does say that live yogurt is an exception cos of probiotics

my doc told me that probiotic capsules wouldn't be 'live' like yogurt tho

Cappuccino · 31/05/2007 14:20

here it is need to get hang of new links

hjscho · 31/05/2007 14:50

I thought the yogurt just didn't have enough of the bacteria in it,whereas the capsules did. I'm no pro there though.

Cappuccino · 31/05/2007 14:53

no neither am I

but my doctor and Gwynneth Paltrow's nutritionist seem to agree about the yogurt, so who am I to argue?

(also it tastes nice)

multitasker · 31/05/2007 17:55

Cap - you are a saint for eating such pure foods - I don't know - no actually I do know that I could never stick to a diet so severe, I'm not good with hunger pangs - PMSL at "so hungry I could eat the kids"!!

So I need to look for live yoghurt tomorrow - would it be in Sainsburys? And what sort of cardboard - I mean oatflakes would you reccommend?

Cappuccino · 31/05/2007 21:05

oh god it's only for 3 weeks

I'm going back after that, thrush or no

do you know I have had a lot of problems with my breakfast. I can't get anything without any sugar in, my rice millet flakes have grape juice in

but I am ignoring it

I do have gluten-free muesli but it is so crackly it is like gravel, I have to whizz it up with yogurt

multitasker · 31/05/2007 22:49

I do like porridge - but I actually found it constipated me, so back to the reliable All Bran from tomorrow.
Have you lost weight so far? I wouldn't mind getting rid of my jelly belly. Reading some of your ahem, meals reminds me I must start back on the stir-frys again, problem is I do like a few mushrooms in it and I know they are a no no.
And I don't think my half hour bike ride in the evening is helping either - my fangos on fire by the time I'm done

Cappuccino · 01/06/2007 17:08

lol at yer fanjo

what had you heard about mushrooms? they're not allowed on my detox but I'm sceptical as to why

multitasker · 01/06/2007 18:50

They are a type of fungi aren't they? I have just came across it in different articles that mushrooms are not good for thrush sufferers.
I'm having a lovely stir fry at the mo - complete with a few of the forbidden. But I have doused it in cayenne pepper so hopefully it will be thruogh me before my stomach cops on.

ooh well if you have any more no-nos I'd be pleased to hear it

I am hoping that by cutting down on everything else, I can still hang on to the worst thing of all - wine

jandeb · 02/06/2007 12:53

maybe this will help

www.thekefirshop.co.uk

they sell organic live cultures which contain all the good bacteria.

Kerrymum - what does it say about fruit in general - for example I take a few segments of grapefruit on an empty stomach each morning - is that not a good thing?? And I make fruit smoothies - would that be the same as fruit juices?

god kerry don't tell me you can't eat any of those permanently?

on the detox I'm doing none of those are available either, except herbal teas

it's just short-term, right?

Cappuccino · 03/06/2007 14:30

can we have bananas?

my diet says I can have bananas

should I stop?

Cappuccino · 03/06/2007 20:18

and lemons? can we have those?

(this is my last question honest!)

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/06/2007 21:04

No fruit! Step away from the fruit!

If you have candida one of the things that feeds it most is sugar. All fruit is basically just sugar, so is to be avoided.

Cappuccino · 03/06/2007 21:43

no bananas

no lemons

no herbal teas

they have little sugar in them and actually reduce blood sugar

this is good yes

no bananas

Cappuccino · 03/06/2007 21:48

ooh kerry you are kind

I'm just a poor woman who hasn't had a beer for a week

and lemons are all I can look forward to
