Does anyone else sneeze when they look up near the sun?

Whenever I’m trying to look in the sky for a jet or a plane, if I look too near the sun I always seem to sneeze.. anyone else do this/ know why this happens? My friends think it's a weird trait and I also sneeze a lot more when drunk

my son does it if that helps...

BlackStoneCherie · 11/07/2018 14:32

Yes, I do....just googled it too:

About 25% of people sneeze when they look at the sun or another bright light. Sun-sneezing has been called everything from photic sneeze reflex to ACHOO syndrome (for autosomal dominant compelling helioophthalmic outburst). But no one really knows what's going on

FoxAndBear · 11/07/2018 14:40

Whenever I'm close to sneezing but it's thinking of disappearing, if I look at a light then it helps the sneeze out!

Dazza284428 · 11/07/2018 14:55

Omg I get this all the time I go out when it's sunny outside.
I looked it up and it affects like 20% of the population.
If it's quite bright out I'll keep sneezing.
Ill always sneeze when I walk down a certain street, it's weird come to think about it.

feejee · 11/07/2018 15:39

Yes. First thing in the morning if it is sunny I open the curtains and sneeze. Not if it's cloudy.

marthastew · 11/07/2018 15:46

I thinks it's something to do with the optic nerve being highly stimulated and in some people the reaction is so strong in that part of your head that the body reacts with a sneeze.

PineapplePower · 11/07/2018 15:52

Yeah I have this too, but I don’t necessarily have to be looking at the sun either! It’s enough just to go outdoors, only happens within the first few minutes of being outdoors and is especially apparent when going from dark interiors to strong sudden light. It’s weird

Metalhead · 11/07/2018 15:55

My DH and DD2 have this!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 11/07/2018 15:58

DD2 gets this when she eats proper chocolate.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 11/07/2018 15:59

I used to but don't any more

muffinthepuffin · 11/07/2018 16:00

Yep, I have it and so does my DH. It's called photo-something 🤔
I sneeze if I have a mint, too, wonder if they're linked.

9amTrain · 11/07/2018 19:08

Yeah I thought everyone did!

Hippopotas · 11/07/2018 19:31

I do

ibbydibby · 11/07/2018 19:58

Yes, although the other way round, ie if I feel a need to sneeze I look at the sun to force it out...

user109842 · 12/07/2018 19:16

I sneeze when I pluck my eyebrows Grin

Doje · 12/07/2018 19:20

I do this.

Also, my tongue itches when I scratch inside my elbow.

househunthappening · 12/07/2018 19:24

@user109842 me too Grin

thedevilinablackdress · 12/07/2018 19:31

I thought everyone did. My grandad told me about it as a child to help get half sneezes out.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 12/07/2018 19:38

My son has done this right from when he was a newborn on his first trip outside (home from hospital)

MsHomeSlice · 12/07/2018 19:39

the cranial nerves branch and divide and the one that controls pupil size is linked with the one that causes sneezing, so a sudden bright light stimulus to the eye nerve branch can cause a misfire to the sneeze branch and LO! Sunshine sneezing!

DS2 and I both have this, dh used to despair as DS2 and I were always sneezing in tandem with one another :o

reetgood · 12/07/2018 19:40

My baby boy does this - I thought it was a baby thing!

WinkysTeatowel · 12/07/2018 19:42

DH and DD do it. Weirdos

foxferry · 12/07/2018 19:54

Yup. My dad is very very sun-sneezy. He'll do maybe 10 in a row just looking at bright lights!

StephenStrange · 12/07/2018 19:55

I have this and the rest of my family think I’m weird Grin

Summerisdone · 12/07/2018 20:05

I often do. I'd say about 60% of the time I'll sneeze because I looked at the sun, I also find it to be a great solution to help those awkward sneezes that seem to get stuck in their way out... look at the sun and I can sneeze properly.

I actually always just presumed this was a thing for everyone tbh Grin
