Does anyone else sneeze when they look up near the sun?

Whenever I’m trying to look in the sky for a jet or a plane, if I look too near the sun I always seem to sneeze.. anyone else do this/ know why this happens? My friends think it's a weird trait and I also sneeze a lot more when drunk

I do, and DD1. Always thought it was totally normal until I spoke to someone who doesn’t have it, and realised how weird it must sound to them.

ILikTheBred · 12/07/2018 20:15

I don’t but DH and all three of our children do this. It seems to be a genetic thing !

Kirbs1979 · 12/07/2018 20:24

@muffinthepuffin I sneeze when i have mints too, although they have to be extra strong mints, spearmints I'm fine with

muffinthepuffin · 12/07/2018 21:24

@Kirbs1979 me too!! I can't eat extra strong mints if I'm driving for that reason!

jmscp2015 · 12/07/2018 21:31

I thought it was just me!! GrinGrin

WillowtheWasp · 12/07/2018 21:33

I have the mints thing too! Especially extra strong !

MiddlingMum · 12/07/2018 21:36

I have that. It's horrible if you're driving on a sunny day, go round a corner and suddenly start sneezing.

welshmist · 12/07/2018 21:38

I have this and two of my DC. It is a strange thing to inherit.

BertieBotts · 13/07/2018 05:58

I don't, but I knew it was a thing because it's mentioned in a Horrible Science book :)

They theorised it was a protective reflex to make you close your eyes, but I think the stimulation to the optic nerve makes more sense.

bikerclaire · 13/07/2018 06:02

I read somewhere that it's a mutation, like blue eyes. Some have it and some don't.

PopPoppityPop · 13/07/2018 06:16

Yeah, my baby does too. A family member thought I was allergic to the sun but to be fair, I did come out in a rash when they noticed I did it as a child.

Bue · 13/07/2018 06:19

I thought everyone did! I'm astonished that other people don't!

elQuintoConyo · 13/07/2018 06:21

Yes, me too! Also to very strong minty chewing gum (but not mints themselves) when i first pop it in my mouth.

And to Italian espressos - doesn't happen in any other country, but give me an Italian espresso and AAAAA-CHOOOOOOEY!

Quirks are good. Long like the quirks!

caughtinthemiddle2 · 13/07/2018 06:21

My dh and 13 month old ds both do this! I find it cute he inherited it off his dad!

elQuintoConyo · 13/07/2018 06:21

*long live

RedLemonade · 13/07/2018 06:22

I thought everyone did too! So presumably 75% of the population has no method by which to encourage our a reluctant sneeze??!
Flowers for them.

cricketmum84 · 13/07/2018 06:27

Haha I use this to my advantage! You know when you feel a sneeze coming on but it just won't sneeze out? And it drives you mad? Just look at the sky!

BusySittingDown · 13/07/2018 06:28

DD2 used to as a baby, I haven’t noticed it recently so I’m not sure if she still does it (she’s 7 now) but it used to make me laugh. I’d be pushing her in the prank and as soon as any light hit her she would sneeze, then she would be shaded then we’d turn a corner and the light would hit her and she’d sneeze again. Grin

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 06:31

My Spanish family encourage a child with "something down the wrong way" to look at the sky...

BertieBotts · 13/07/2018 06:33

I have no way to encourage a reluctant sneeze! I usually blow my nose if it's really bothering me.

I do seem to sneeze in response to sneezing so I will usually sneeze a few times in a row.

BusySittingDown · 13/07/2018 07:39

Pushing her in the pram.
