Has anyone found anything that can help? I am ready to chop my leg off. I have tried pain killers, support bandages, heat, ice, elevation, tonic water. Help!!!

Poor you!
My DM has restless leg syndrome. There is medication that can provide some relief. Have you seen your GP?

haggisaggis · 11/07/2018 01:16

I’m lucky as mine aren’t too bad - worst when I’m tired. Going for a walk helps me - and particularly walking on cold grass ! Think the cold distracts from the restlessness.

SeaToSki · 11/07/2018 01:19

Magnesium. Its like a miracle cure. Take 100% of the recommended daily intake and in about 3 days it will knock the achy restless squirmy oh my god OUT. Oh and also take Vit D from Sept to May as that helps as well (assuming the other months you get some skin in the sun time every day)

SleepWarrior · 11/07/2018 01:24

Oh my goodness there's nothing quite like it is there? Sad

Is it all the time or in bed? I only get it when trying to fall asleep. I tense me legs up over and over trying to doing each different muscle group, and point my toes hard then relax, and clench my bum repeatedly. Cycle round those until I'm practically asleep (then get jolted awake with the horrible sensation a few times!).

donutsarelife · 11/07/2018 01:25

I spend most of my nights pacing these days to try to stop them. I am going to get magnesium first thing tomorrow. Thank you

@SleepWarrior , that's the worst thing, when I am just dropping off and think I am getting to sleep and then they jolt me awake and I am back to pacing and almost sleeping on my feet. I used to have it really bad a few years ago but it has come back with avengence 😡

Oh no you poor thing. Mine was thankfully only at horrendous levels when pregnant so there was a (sort of) end to it.

Good luck with the magnesium.

Tartyflette · 11/07/2018 01:39

I take Ropinirole, prescribed by my GP. Nothing else has worked for me.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/07/2018 02:11

Had it all my life. Worst when overtired so I try to avoid that. Also, I think there is a psychological element as I always get it on long haul flights and in situations when I know I’m not going to be able to move about.

If I wake in the night I will invariably have it. I’ve found that a warm milk drink and a biscuit or two helps get me back to sleep. I also find the position I sleep in helps. When I bend the affected leg tightly that seems to alleviate the discomfort.

I’m trying the magnesium tomorrow, whoever suggested that.

honeybeeq · 11/07/2018 02:23

I get like a twitchy leg? Just the left one and it's around the knee, I can feel the twitch coming on and growing and then it spasms out into a twitch. Sometimes it shoots down to my foot. I find stretching my calf can help. Is this restless legs?

donutsarelife · 11/07/2018 09:41

Turns out my partner has magnesium powder (something to do with the gym) so I have had some this morning. Fingers crossed

Its going to take 2 or 3 days to build up enough to really help properly. The other way you can boost your magnesium levels is by having a bath with Epspm Salts = actually magnesium salts. Put a ridiculously large amount in a hot bath, stir to dissolve and soak for at least half an hour. If you do it before bed, it helps relax the muscles too.

GourmetGold · 14/07/2018 20:10

Wheat grass juice powder (has to be juice powder, not 'wheat grass powder') worked for me, heaped teaspoon a day in a drink. It's really rich in minerals, especially Magnesium.

abbsisspartacus · 14/07/2018 20:12

Magnesium oil on the legs effervescent magnesium supplements

buildabear · 14/07/2018 20:13

Bar of soap under the sheet by your feet, no idea how it works but It does

Waterlemon · 14/07/2018 20:18

I think I’ve suffered since my teens. If I do lots of walking/standing in a day OR if I’ve not done much walking eg sat at desk, all day I get it.

I recently mentioned to gp about it and I’ve been sent for a blood test as apparently it can by a symptom of aneamic. Which will explain why I suffered so bad with it in pregnancy.

I find raising my legs up on the back of the sofa or against a cold wall helps.

fontofnoknowledge · 14/07/2018 20:27

I have it. My mum has it. My grandma had it. Arghhhh SO annoying!!!
I don't know the link but I am going through the whole sleep apnea process with sleep studies and they link it with low magnesium AND low vitamin D..
have upped both and there is definite improvement..

I have also tried 'old wives tale' cures.. the most bizarre one is a bar of soap under your feet in bed at night.. MUST be psychological but I fall asleep....

billybigballs · 14/07/2018 23:10

I posted about this the other day! Torture isn't it.
Magnesium spray helps a bit. Some gentle exercise in the evening ie a walk or swimming. Not sitting with legs up before bed. Getting into bed and going to sleep as fast as possible, before it starts. Distracting yourself whilst dropping off - I find listening to the shipping forecast helps take my mind off it.

Thanks for you, it is horrible.

donutsarelife · 16/07/2018 07:14

Where do I find magnesium spray? It has been so awful the last few days, I haven't had more than 2 hours sleep a night

OP posts:
BendyBusBuggy · 16/07/2018 23:59

Amazon I think

donutsarelife · 17/07/2018 22:05

I have just had a friend round to do crystal healing. She says she has helped someone else with restless legs. At this point I am open to anything!

I use a gel for horses. It's used on their legs when they have been exercising. It helps if you put it on the lower part of your leg before bed. The one I use has menthol and eucalyptus in.

Toofle · 21/07/2018 20:04

Magnesium spray before bed. It tingles or even prickles for a while after you apply it. Mine's called BetterYou Goodnight.

Cheeseislife · 21/07/2018 20:11

Quinine (found in tonic water) may help. My OH suffers with it, you have my sympathy. You can definitely get the magnesium spray on amazon

Rebecca36 · 21/07/2018 20:38

I feel sorry for the OP. I have had restless legs on and off since I was 22, usually when stressed.

However magnesium spray called BetterYou magnesium oil is marvellous - it actually works. I also bought another make of the magnesium oil and it wasn't so good so settled on BetterYou. I think I got it from Amazon.

It's messy - I sit down or else stand with an old towel under my feet covering surrounding area when I spray it on and then rub it in well with my hands. Then I go to bed and sleep!

It's a bit drying but that's easily remedied with body lotion after a shower the next day.

Good luck!
