Sinusitis is horrible, isn't it. I had polyps which were removed after over a year long wait (plus a pregnancy & bf), but would definitely say op was worth it. Not a permanent fix, but has certainly made things more bearable for the last 2 years. Apparently it's the most frequently done op & is one of the oldest, so whilst there are risks too horrible to dwell on, it should be safe enough.

Have you tried ginger tea? Guess it's like the curry theory, but I read somewhere (some ayurvedic website, I think) that mucus build up and sinus pain is sign of some sort of imbalance & needs to be redressed by 'hot' remedies. I'm not an expert, but desperation made me read anything for advice. I have certainly found ginger tea a short term relief.

Absolutely the best treatment were steroid drops from the ENT specialist, but you can only take these short term & not whilst bf or pg. Can't remember the name, but had to hang my head backwards off the end of a bed & put 2 drops in each day. Saw results within days.

Keep pushing with the ENT route. I had a CAT scan which showed sinuses all inflamed & made me really feel like I wasn't making a fuss over nothing.

Good luck, anyway.

Sympathies to talyco and all the other sufferers. It's rotten isn't it? I get immobilising sinus headaches once a month, regular as clockwork, usually just after af but also if I have been unusually stressed or dehydrated. At that time, I wasn't sure what was causing the pain and it got so bad that I went to see my optician, gynaecologist, gp and dentist. Here's what they said (if it's any help):

optician - all OK - eyes not implicated

gynaecologist - couldn't help but said that the same hormones that 'stop the flow' after your af can have the same effect on other secretions in the body (sorry if too much info!) thus bunging everything up

dentist - couldn't help but remarked on 'my sinuses being the size of bellows!!'

gp - again couldn't help but blood test came back as me being very allergic to dust, or more specifically, dust mites.

Even though the regularity of the headaches must mean that there is hormonal involvement somewhere in all of this - I do now tend to always sleep with an open window - dust our bedroom v. regularly, change sheets very regularly and generally keep environment as dust-free as possible (not easy because we're renovating). Also, however tempting, I never lie in bed even when suffering from an excruciating headache. Much better to suffer upright!!

P.S. My brother (same bellow-like sinuses) had them flushed and the operation was painful, expensive, and totally ineffective ....

OOps - meant talcyO - sorry

AnneJones · 30/05/2007 15:53

Just wanted to add my sympathies to the list - I suffer too and it is truly unpleasant. I've only thrown up with the pain once...thank goodness. What I can't stand is the low-level ache that gradually builds without you realising until your day is totally ruined by a pain you can't get away from.

I also haven't found a magic cure, though I find Boots own make extra strength sinus relief tablets good for shaking off a medium attack so that it is bearable. I've also heard that horseradish is very good - I get very excited baout being able to breathe through both nostrils so I try to tuck into a spoonful of horseradish occasionally just for this! Will def try the ginger tea. I find I crave foods that are spicy - anything to take away that awful sick feeling in my mouth and stomach when my sinuses are bad.

Sorry to post with no help - many commiserations, and thanks for starting this thread though!

has anyone suggested cranial osteopathy - I hear it can work well for some people. In my case stopping the flying for work was the real cure.

Sorry, not read rest of thread, but reflexology helps and sudafed - but you have to keep taking it. If you get the one where you take ONE tablet every 4 hours you can take painkillers too.

Hi

I just got an email from Patrick Holford the Health Dr about 3 weeks ago giving the cures for sinusitis and saying that antibiotics are no good. Google him and you should get his website.

I also suffered when I was pregnant and strangely the best thing I found was getting into my power shower putting it on full blast and blasting my face, it felt really good. I also did inhalations etc and managed to cure it without anything the 2nd time around by myself.

I also had acupuncture.

Hope you get better soon

cjmumto2 · 30/05/2007 20:52

Ooh just thought of another thing I did albeit gross, dissolve loads of salt in warm water then snort it up your nose and flush out your sinuses. Takes some practise.
