Keep getting thrush what feels like every other month.

two months ago i started taking probiotic vitamin tablets, pre&probiotic drinks for a few weeks and have come down with thrush again

I talk to dh, friends, mn about any worries i have, i have stopped eating biscuits and snack on fruit, i wash everyday and wear cotton knickers.

Can anyone help with any new remedies please?

What do you wash with? I find certain soaps can give me thrush....

Do you eat a lot of yeasty things? I would also cut down on the amt of pro/prebiotic stuff you are taking - the body is pretty good at regulating its flora and fauna as it were so you maybe disrupting it with too much of the pro/prebiotics...

HTH?

hamma · 17/05/2007 21:16

try cutting out wheat altogether - do a serach on this sight for thrush, lots ofgood advice

thegardener · 17/05/2007 21:23

I wash with a non perfumed soap as my hands are quite sensitive to some soaps.

I bake bread in the bread maker so perhaps i should cut that out for a while?

I'll stop taking the pre/probiotic tablets & drinks aswell and see if they make a difference, any other ideas?

That sounds quite good to be starting with..if you bath a lot, try showering instead - soaking in bath (espec if hot and with bubble bath!) really doesn't help...

Erm....can't think of anything else. I use Johnsons pH 5.5 soap - never had any probs with it

hamma · 17/05/2007 21:34

tg - I went to see two specialists about recurring thrush after being treated for a long time for it as was dh and after a long time a nurse said to me to change my diet -cut out sugar and wheta and yeats and it worked. No if I've had a lot of wine or sweets I can still get it back and I just cut back ont these things

hamma · 17/05/2007 21:34

that should be wheat and yeast

Othersideofthechannel · 17/05/2007 21:36

I had a uni friend who suffered from recurring thrush and she was told to iron her knickers and it worked! Apparently the heat of the iron killed off any lingering bacteria which survived the washing machine!

thegardener · 17/05/2007 21:39

gosh got to cut back on wine aswell, i feel so sad, i don't drink a lot, dh & i usually buy 2 bottles a week but might have a glass or two of bitter with dh aswell. what alcohol can you drink?

so really can't eat cakes either, just lovely fruit

thegardener · 17/05/2007 21:41

will try the idea of ironing my nics, sounds far less dramatic than the other ideas, but thank you for them and will try them but really hope the nicker ironing will win

You really need to watch the sugar - and all those probiotic drinks are full of them!

Go and get some acidophilus from the health food shop - a really good one will keep them in the fridge.

Then stop eating anything with sugar - including fruit, and check any processed/tinned foods you're using because they often have sugar in them as well.

Also need to avoid yeast - bread, Marmite and (I'm afraid!) alcohol

Are you on the pill? That can cause problems too.

There are some very good books on Candida (the imbalance of which is what causes thrush) and it's definitely worth getting hold of one or two.

I follow a low carb diet now which has really helped me - as well as dealing with the thrush my skin is much better and I no longer get IBS attacks.

Good luck - I know what it's like to get this regularly.

Have you tried grapefruit seed extract?

thegardener · 18/05/2007 10:23

BB - what is diflucan? Is it like a canneston tablet.

TB - will try grapefruit seed extract.

didn't realise there was a lot of sugar in these biotic drinks, was recommended by someone, just thought they would help!
And fruit, i love fruit but will cut that out too unless there is a low sugar content one? and alcohol, i am starting to feel depressed

i think i am going to cut down/out on all things that have been mentioned esp. bread, sugary stuff and alchol

Thanks for your support!

Diflucan and Canesten Oral have the same active ingredient (fluconazole) but I think Diflucan is stronger.

You need to mount an all round attack to break the cycle of infection.

Treat you and partner with fluconazole at the same time.
Cut out sugars, yeast and wheat as much as possible, as quickly as possible.
Do not use bath products other than the unscented soap. Avoided use of soap at all in the genital area.
Change contraceptive method if you are on the pill.
Do not use tampons.
Cotton underwear and limited wearing of tight jeans/trousers.
Stockings instead of tights.

Once the cycle if broken and you have been clear of infection for 2-3 months you can slowly allow sugars, yeast and wheat back into your diet but still keeping the levels reasonably low.

I would suggest you stick to the rest of the list on a permanent basis though.

I had chronic thrush for over 20 years, but the above regime cracked it and I now haven't had a dose for about 5 years.

Hi there.

Have you had your blood sugar tested? Recurrent thrush can sometimes be one of the signs of the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. I'm not trying to scare monger you - just may be best to get this ruled out.

Thegardner
I cannot eat home made bread at all. It is now the only thing that triggers a bout of thrush, when dh goes thru one of his 'bakers' phases. It's a shame because I love it soo much.

I think home made bread is probably higher in yeast than shop-bought, and of course the yeast is much fresher.

clumsymum · 18/05/2007 11:01

oh, as far as alcohol is concerned, you will be fine with the odd gin and tonic or glass of scotch, but avoid beer and wine which both contain yeast

TheBlonde · 18/05/2007 15:09

For the grapefruit seed extract try to get the tablets - the liquid doesn't taste great!

thegardener · 18/05/2007 20:29

thanks for all your messages & advice.
I was chatting to dh about it earlier & since we had a breadmaker for a wedding present i have had thrush - we may buy 1 loaf a week but bake all our own, so it could possibly be that.

I went to the docs about 6 months ago about it and had my blood sugar checked & it was normal thankfully.

Will be cutting out as much wheat products as i can - will now get rice crispies, gluten free pasta & flour for cooking etc.

Will also buy diflucan for dh & i - is it an oral tablet that we both have to take?, as canneston tablet is only for the woman & the man uses the cream.

Will make an appointment to see doc re contraceptive pill and won't use tampons any longer.

What product do you use when washing around your genital area if you don't use soap?

I really appreciate all your helpful advice, thank you

SaintGeorge · 19/05/2007 19:14

Yes, you can both take Diflucan.

If you wash properly and as often as you need to then water should be sufficient.

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/05/2007 19:31

Diflucan is very expensive - more than £12 for one dose. Go to Boots and ask for their own version of it.

Spidermama · 19/05/2007 19:34

Mine finally disappeared after a homeopathic remedy. He was a great homeopath but I can't remember the remedy. Anyhow we're all different so it's best to get assessed properly.

MY HV told me that some farmers give their dairy cattle homeopathic remedies to cure their thrush.

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/05/2007 19:34

Oh, and get dh to wash (just with water) after sex.

Shower rather than having baths as well.

Hope you're clear soon - it's a horrible, horrible thing.

Tickle · 19/05/2007 19:40

Agree with StGeorge on the bath products... I finally got rid of recurring thrush just by giving up bubble baths (Oh, and got dh to treat himself properly, for more than one day)
Good luck

jalopy · 19/05/2007 20:29

Wine can be a big offender too.
