Dd (12) crying with toothache - please help

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 20:59

My poor dd has tooth ache and has had for 3 days. Dentist yesterday says tooth needs to come out under ga. There are other issues that she needs to see orthodontist but that isn't for now.

She has been taking amoxicillin but if anything it's getting worse not better. Has taken them for two days. Rang dentist today who said that once they start working the pain should go off.

How long does that take? Dd is in agony. How can I get help for my dd - willing to pay.

What painkillers is she taking?
Are you doing paracetamol and nurofen? Ice pack. Clove oil.
Poor kid. Toothache is grim.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 21:05

Paracetamol and ibuprofen and sent dp for bonjela which I seem to remember helped me.

How long for antibiotics to work?

Is there ANY chance of getting the tooth extracted under sedation over the weekend? Or will she need to see off the infection first. Seeing my dd in pain is killing me

Clove oil is better than bonjela.

WishingOnABar · 04/05/2018 21:08

If she has an abcess you may be able to draw it out, apply warm salted water to the side of the gum under the tooth using a cotton bud. Repeat every hour-ish and it will draw the pus outwards and releive some of the pressure. I had a recurring infection in a tooth that caused so much pain, this helped until I could get to the dentist

Can you google emergency dentist service?
IME getting even a private dental appointment is difficult.

endofthelinefinally · 04/05/2018 21:11

My dentist recommended frequent rinsing with hot salt water.

Chrisinthemorning · 04/05/2018 21:11

Is she cooperative to have a local anaesthetic?

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 21:11

Dentist didn't say abscess just infection and inflammation. I didn't go as I was work. Do took her.

Anbesol liquid better than bonjela too -apply with a cotton bud. Safe for kids.
She may find warmth soothing?

CocoaGin · 04/05/2018 21:12

I'm fairly sure you can take co-codamol at 12. I had a filling on Tuesday that was near a root and I'm still on them today. Paracetamol won't touch dental pain.

You should have a local NHS emergency dentist, just google it.

moreismore · 04/05/2018 21:13

Would also second the salt water mouthwash, frequently

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 04/05/2018 21:13

Salt rinse and corsodol mouth rinse (this will clarify how bad it is - when it is really bad you don't care about the taste!).

Is there any reason why it needs to be under GA? My 11yr just has a local although those are milk teeth.

daisychainer · 04/05/2018 21:13

Ring round dental surgeries to see if they will see her. Ask for co-codamol if pain is not being controlled by paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Is your dentist nhs or private? Have they given you a date when they will take the tooth out?

Chrisinthemorning · 04/05/2018 21:14

Ring 111. If she’s 12 she should be ok to have an injection to numb up and either extract or dress the tooth to relieve the pain. 111 will point you to your local out of hours dental service.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 21:14

Christian sadly not. She is a very anxious child although the dentist didn't even try/suggest according to dp.

Any benefit from the antibiotic should be evident after 48 hours or so. Ibuprofen is your best bet as it will reduce the swelling, which in turn will make the area less painful.

If she cracked or split the tooth the antibiotics won't eliminate the pain. So sorry for your DD!

MrsJayy · 04/05/2018 21:16

I second clove oil the bonjela might numb it but tomorrow get cloveoil rub it on her gums. Your poor Dd toothache is the worst

Tisfortired · 04/05/2018 21:17

Get some of the original Listerine and get her to swill it every now and again. It kind of acts as an anaesthetic.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 21:18

Daisy no date she only went yesterday. NHS dentist. Didn't think could do private for kids but will look into it.

They said the pain would go once the infection goes but it's getting worse

Lem In answer to your question, the antibiotics took 5 days to get rid of the pain for me, and like PP, I'd recommend paracetamol, ibuprofen and anbesol. Painkillers with codeine are good, but I'm not sure if they're suitable for under 16s, it might be worth checking with a pharmacist.

MrsJayy · 04/05/2018 21:22

If she is no better painwise after the bonjela I would take her to A&E or if she can wait out of hours Gp painkillers dont seem to be touching it,

CocoaGin · 04/05/2018 21:23

My dentist usually prescribes Metronidazole for dental infection. She could need something stronger than Amoxycillin. Poor kid, it's utterly rotten having toothache.

We took our DCs to a private dentist.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/05/2018 21:26

Not keen on her having codeine if I'm honest. We are distracting with harry potter just now and she is calmer. Encouraging to hear that the antibiotics took a while as at least I can hope it works.

Just got some paracetamol on board will hold off on the ibuprofen for as long as we can to try and achieve the best relief.

Poor dd Sad

Yes I thought metronidazole but maybe she is too young

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 04/05/2018 21:29

Do you think she would tolerate an icepack on her face might take the swelling down
