Dd (12) crying with toothache - please help

My poor dd has tooth ache and has had for 3 days. Dentist yesterday says tooth needs to come out under ga. There are other issues that she needs to see orthodontist but that isn't for now.

She has been taking amoxicillin but if anything it's getting worse not better. Has taken them for two days. Rang dentist today who said that once they start working the pain should go off.

How long does that take? Dd is in agony. How can I get help for my dd - willing to pay.

Try and get her an emergency appointment tomorrow, ring 111 for info. Ideally extraction under Local Anaesthetic tomorrow, but if this is not realistic, hopefully a sedative dressing will be placed to tide her over until GA or Sedation extraction.
If your daughter hasn't got any facial swelling then the prescribed antibiotics aren't going to be very useful for toothache I'm afraid. Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol on a 3.5 hour cycle, and remember not to put a hot water bottle anywhere near the face.

LEM, don't you work at a vets? Can you see a cavity in the aching tooth? Little dark spot? If so, you could put a drop of local anaesthetic directly onto it. Dry the tooth first with a cotton bud.

My friend once put up on facebook she sucked those numbing throat sweets for toothache apparently worked a treat

Villainous that is more than my job is worth!

She says the pain is going off a bit thank god! We have bonjela now.

I can't see her tolerating it under local. Am hoping it goes off and we can wait for ga.

I'm not suggesting you nick it! Rather that it has been known for HCP staff to help in harmless situations. Topical Bonjela might do a (less effective) job. Poor little pet.

Try Anbesol gel - it's a mild local anaesthetic.
I had terrible pain once that developed the day after having fillings put in, I couldn't even open my mouth to put food in.
Anbesol is what the pharmacist recommended though it didn't work for me, salt rinses didn't either.
The only thing that worked was when they gave me an emergency appt, cleaned the teeth, seems something had got stuck under a tooth during the filling.

Might be worth ringing the non emergency version of 999 for advice.

Oh your poor dd I had jaw surgery two months ago. Worst bit was the elastics pulling at the gum and paracetomal and ibuprofen didn't help with the pain. Needed stronger drugs. Hope she gets it sorted soon.

If you are in London I know s fantastic private children only dentist in Golders Green called mr dentist - amazing man called Jeremy runs it.

Not too young for metronidazole. Dd's teeth get infected rather than fall out so frequently in this position. Is it a baby tooth? Can she wobble it at all? I encourage dd to try to get it out herself. Most only take a few minutes under local and now dd asks for extraction in preference to antibiotics - though usually the dentist tries a course of antibiotics. At her age though many friends have lost all their teeth and are starting on braces so we don't get too sentimental over them.

Liquid ibuprofen on the spot can help too. Wobbling just after pain relief can help.

BikeRunSki · 05/05/2018 07:58

Ow ow ow. I’ve been there. Pain was worse than childbirth I swear. The tooth was taken out in the end, but dentist wanted the infection to go first, so that it did not spread when he took the tooth out. I hope the antibiotics kick in soon.

We called the OOH dentist this morning but all the appointment slots were full Hmm we couldn't find a dentist in the local area for love nor money. Either private or NHS.

We were advised to go to the pharmacist and they were so helpful. Gave us some co codamol if it gets really bad and some special gel. Not bonjela as apparently that contains aspirin Shock not the same as the teething gel.

Have alternated ibruprofen and paracetamol today and took dd out for the day to distract. She had a twinge earlier so took meds immediately before it got too bad. Thankfully haven't needed the cocodimol as yet.

So now a wait for the bastard tooth to come out. I want it gone asap but know she won't tolerate while awake so does anyone know of a dentist (NHS or private) that will do this under sedation or GA? my dd is so scared so needs someone used to anxious children.

Sorry meant to say we are in Kent. Willing to travel. Would like to say money is no object so may need to get a loan - will the dentists have finance available?

Corsodyl mouthwash did me wonders when I was in agony with dry socket. But check the label in not sure if it is recommended for people under 16

LEMtheoriginal · 05/05/2018 19:31

I would have fat and no chance of getting dd to gargle with it anyway. But thanks for the suggestion. No pain killers since 3.30 and she hasn't mentioned anything. I think the ibruprofen lasts a bit longer.fingers crossed. She has a school trip as a reward for excellent effort on Tuesday so really praying she is ok as only a few kids chosen to go.

Clove oil, seriously. Tastes like utter crap but it works. I was plagued by terrible teeth problems for years in my teens and it was a blessing. It’s not medicated so you can just constantly top it up without worrying about overdose. Hope she feels better soon.

Usernom1234567890 · 05/05/2018 22:27

Has her own dentist done a referral for GA/ Sedation ? Do you know where the referral is going to?

vjg13 · 05/05/2018 22:38

Trying not to be too doom and gloom but there can be a long wait for children's dentistry under GA.
