fatty liver/nash

have had raised ast and alt in a routine blood test.
liver function test was repeated a months later and the levels are even higher.

sooo, as I don't drink, healthy bmi and don't have hepatitis, dr said it must be nash. told me to go on a very low fat diet for 3 months and then repeat the blood test.

anyone else? did it resolve?

I have seen articles linking nash with gluten, if it were me, I would go gluten free to see if it helps (gluten is implicated with numerous chronic health problems, not just celiac).

Search medical papers as abnormal liver enzymes are frequently linked to reaction to gluten. I researched it a lot for my ds who has been gluten free for 15 years.

bluerunningshoes · 26/04/2018 17:12

interesting.
no coeliacs, that was investigated after a nasty d&v whjch didn't go away

Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis or Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is nothing to do with gluten.

It's associated with a combination of high blood fats, hypertension, obesity, Type 2 Diabetes with or without a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome

The 'solution' is a calorie restricted diet, low in natural and processed sugars and low in saturated fats.

Ickyockycocky · 26/04/2018 17:28

I had similar blood results and it turned out that I had gall stones. I don't know how your doctor can say what's wrong without sending you for a scan.

bluerunningshoes · 26/04/2018 17:41

me neither
I'm not fat (healthy bmi, 30% body fat) gtt fine.
no viral hepatitis

I like my cheese and chocolate, though...

Paracetamol? Mushroom foraging?

bluerunningshoes · 26/04/2018 18:32

nope. neither.

now I wonder if they should have sent me for a scan...

I've got similar issues and I already have autoimmune diseases. So I've just looked up the gluten link ,because I'm higher risk for coeliacs, and there is peer reviewed evidence with coeliac disease. Although I've not read the full thing yet, I will later on.

Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is not linked with gluten consumption.
Complications of a high fat diet such as high blood fats, high cholesterol and glucose impairment can occur in someone who is a healthy BMI as well as those who are overweight/obese.
The best management for NASH is a low fat diet and including exercise in your weekly routine. I imagine that if this doesn't work your GP will investigate other potential causes.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 26/04/2018 19:15

As you need to go low carb as well, you're probably knocking most sources of gluten on the head as well.

Broccoli. Carrots. Beans. Cabbage. Nuts. Seeds.

Think Paleo without the fun.

Lord help you if you need to go on the FODMAP diet.

SluttyButty · 26/04/2018 19:19

But the op doesn't have a definite diagnosis at the moment so it's worth reading up on various things.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 26/04/2018 19:25

I was diagnosed with NASH 15 years ago by LFTs and ultrasound. My LFTs God steadily worse till last summer, when I started the keto diet (very low carb, moderate protein, high fat). I got the news yesterday that my liver function is now normal.

PigInAPokey · 26/04/2018 19:32

I am overweight, high cholesterol and was told that i had slight fatty liver on a scan i had. My blood tests have always been ok though. Wonder if i should try and improve things?

lovemylover · 26/04/2018 19:35

Have you been tested for Haemochromatosis, Really its iron overload, but can cause Fatty liver disease, both my sons have it, with HH

bluerunningshoes · 26/04/2018 19:48

Haemochromatosis: no I haven't.
but I take an iron supplement (recommended by dr) as I tend to get anaemic otherwise.

What is Nash? I have a fatty liver, but am several stones overweight. I am very interested in the link with gluten if this is true. I suspect gluten might be a real issue. I know it is linked with thyroid function too, and I have an underachieve thyroid . Can someone tell me more about the link with gluten? I eat healthily, exercise etc and cannot understand why I am overweight. The doctor has given me no advice about what to do, just printed off some stuff about fatty liver .

cherrytrees123 · 26/04/2018 19:54

Ah, I see what NASH stands for, but how do I know if mine is non alcoholic or not? I probably drink too much, but don't know if this is the issue.

bluerunningshoes · 26/04/2018 19:55

nash is just the medical name for non-alkoholic liver

I will lay off the iron supplement for now...

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 26/04/2018 19:58

Stick to a Paleo diet?

fatty liver/nash
lovemylover · 26/04/2018 22:37

The test for Hamochromatosis is a seperate one from a normal blood test, but usually its inherited, i thought my son was anaemic because he was always tired, and i suggested an iron supplement, but then read in a magazine about HH and suggested he mentioned it to the Dr,as it has similiar symptoms to anaemia,it wasnt very well known about then, Dr did test and it turned out to be HH [so called because its usually passed down through family member, who might not have it but can be carriers, i was tested at 50, and told i didnt have it, but was tested again at 60 and i did, because women lose iron with periods ,
I dont know any of my family who had it but it was there somewhere, my mother lived to 96 and had no symptoms of it, but could have been a carrier, but could be nothing to do with that,
Are you a big meat eater, i have heard that could cause it too

chloesmumtoo · 27/04/2018 07:25

My dp was diagnosed as having nonalcoholic steatohepatitis 16years ago. He had very high alt blood test results. Had biopsy, scans and they said it was caused by a very inflamed fatty liver. He stayed off drink for a long while. Went on a low fat diet and things calmed down so much after that. We now eat normally, drink a little and his test results have been only minorly over normal for years. They are perfectly happy with him. We were told he would always have it but its under control and just has an odd blood test every so many years. We forget about it now really.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 27/04/2018 08:13

Do you eat a lot of fructose sweetners? Sugar?
