My ongoing saga with my blocked deaf ear

Hi

I posted a couple of weeks ago.

I have a blocked ear which has been made worse by using drops.

Went to get it syringed - unsuccessful. Ear canal is narrow and the wax has been pushed right down.

Was told to continue with olive oil and come back.

It's been a month now and I can''t bear it anymore.

Im now completely deaf in that ear. My son also managed to pour the whole bottle of oil over me too Grin

Im worried that syringing will be unsuccessful again.

Im thinking about going to a private clinic to get it sucked out.

Has anyone had this done?

Watered down hydrogen peroxide followed by ear candles. Life changing.

TyneTeas · 23/04/2018 00:10

I don't think ear candles are generally believed to be helpful

Yes! I have my ears sucked out every 9 months and it is the best thing I have ever done. Like you on have a very narrow canal in one ear and adding oil just makes the situation worse. Syringing didn't work.
Went for microsucution and it was like magic. I could hear brilliantly straight after.
Like I said I now get it done every nine months or so.
It costs me 60 pound for both ears. Totally good value.

Thanks guys

Crunchtime - wonderful! Im going to go for it!

Can I recommend that you take someone with you? It's just that it can make you feel really spaced out afterwards and a tiny bit dizzy....well it did for me anyway!

picklemepopcorn · 23/04/2018 18:15

Yes, some places recommend you don't drive afterwards.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/04/2018 18:15

Is there any chance that you might have hay-fever? I had a load of ear problems at this time of year, the ear canals would actually swell shut so that I went deaf. It took age to realise that it was tree pollen, even though I also had other hay fever type symptoms. I take anti-histamines now and my ears are much better. I've also moved area, I suspect that there was a specific type of tree where I used to live that was affecting my ears.

RedRosie · 23/04/2018 18:36

I've had microsuction. Expensive (London though) but worth it. Didn't need anyone with me, but they did give me a cup of tea and ask me to stay for 20 mins afterwards.

It. Was. Wonderful. A whole new world.

Do it. Do it.

viiswi · 23/04/2018 18:36

Hello

Oh no! I really don want to be dizzy. I thought Id be dizzy after syringing but I wasnt so Im praying the suction will be ok.

my husband will be taking me.

I have been told on a few occasions that I hve wax in the ear so I thought Id use drops to try to remove it. I think the wax swelled and apparently it's really far down the canal now.

Get some hydrogen peroxide drops instead of the oil it's much more effective and works much better

RedRosie · 23/04/2018 18:39

I wasn't dizzy! Not a bit! Everything was VERY LOUD for a bit.

Just do it. The relief was incredible.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 23/04/2018 19:02

I've suffered the same as you recently. It gets worse as you start the drops as the was gets soft and tacky. You need to do a week of 2x daily olive oil (head tilted for 10 minutes) then the same with sodium bicarbonate drops (from pharmacy) before getting them syringed. They get worse before they get better.

Spartacunt · 24/04/2018 18:56

Microsuction all the way - the bicarbonate drops are really not good for your ears at all and Jesus wept do NOT do ear candles - at best they don't work but at worst can drop wax in or burn. Total snake oil. Stop the olive oil and fingers crossed for Saturday. I've had it done a few times and it's painless and no dizziness - the relief is fabulous!

healthyheart · 24/04/2018 19:09

Micro suction is fab! You can see your ear (before and after!) on the tv screen too. Satisfaction is brilliant.

lubeybooby · 24/04/2018 19:11

op sounds like glue ear tbh I doubt its the outer part causing this.

take decongestants and use an otovent

viiswi · 24/04/2018 19:44

Hi

I did originally use the hydrogen peroxide and this blocked my ear. I never heard any fizzing either.

What is glue ear? xx

Yes to allergies, my reactions (to certain foods mainly) make my eustachian tubes feel blocked and also increase the production of sebacious fluids including earwax.

Lavalamped · 24/04/2018 20:07

I had my ear microsuctioned (well I think it was that - was like a tiny hoover!) on the NHS, and had no dizziness and wasn't warned not to drive

bluerunningshoes · 24/04/2018 20:10

yes to suction

dh used to need ears cleared every 6 months. then when needed couldn't get an appoinment in time so went to (private) clear ear clinic.

hasn't needed ear clearing since.

that was 6 years ago!

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 24/04/2018 21:01

I don't think sodium bicarbonate is bad for the ears, spartacunt, as the protocol I described is that advised by my GP surgery. They like you to try that as they syringe as a last resort so like you to have a go first with the drops, plus it softens the wax to make the syringing more likely to be successful.

Nomad86 · 24/04/2018 21:04

I have very narrow ear canals and eczema which makes the wax hard to get out. Microsuction works perfectly, it's pain free and you can go as often as you need. It is available on the NHS with a go referral but if there's a waiting list, it's about £30 per ear privately.

Fishcalledlola · 24/04/2018 21:09

I have a deaf ear and I've seen the same specialist twice in the last couple of years. I have scar tissue on the ear drum from having grommets as a kid.
The only advice I was given was to pinch my nose and blow gently to unblock the ear and take decongestants.
I hope you have some success, will be following with interest.

viiswi · 24/04/2018 22:10

Thank you!!

I just can't wait for it to be done!

Roll on Saturday

Super you're right a lot of gps will suggest them but if you ask a specialist they will warn you off them as they can damage the ears. Likewise decongestants need to be used with care as after a few days they cause rebound congestion and make things worse. Microsuction is safer than syringing which a lot of gp surgeries have stopped doing now, again due to the risk of damaging the eardrum.
