My DD is nearly 29 and is a full time wheelchair user with cerebral palsy although she is severely physically disabled she has capacity and is able to make her needs known, sadly over the last 2.5 years she has been in daily chronic pain which has effected her mental health and has made her grumpy, depressed and quite frankly her quality of life is poor. She is living independently with a live in Carer and 4 pop in carers to assist with her personal care. The Gp are unable to give her strong pain meds because they leave her constipated and feeling really sick. She now has crushing headaches and loses feeling in her limbs on a regular basis, she cannot now drive her electric wheelchair far without assistance. During one of her many visits by paramedics one kindly ambulance assistant saw the position we were in and confidentially recommended CBD oil (cannabis oil) for my daughters pain etc.. After much research I ordered some which is uk sourced and supplied in Covent Garden it's filtered to take out the highs and lows ingredient and within a day it came through. Before going to the local shopping centre I placed only 2 drops under her tongue.....within an hour she started crying when I asked why she said it's been so long since I've been in such low level pain, when I asked for her pain count she said 6 out of 50! I was amazed her mood lifted and she drove her wheelchair for the first time on her own again. She slept better that night and her anxiety levels were really low. Next day I gave her more drops in morning and then at night and was amazed once again by the positive results. Holland and Barrett sell it but in a much lesser strength. I rang her care agency who stated categorically that their carers would not administer without a gps letter (fair enough) then they said if she keeps it in her apartment,if their carers see me administer they will 'get in touch with the relevant authorities' her Gp has flatly refused to write a letter and I don't know which way to turn it is legal in the form of an oil in the uk and although you could argue there may be side effects she has already had really bad side effects to the gps meds. I'm giving these oil drops to my DD in secret because I don't want her to be in this awful pain everyday. Where can I get help?

There are MNers who have posted about this before - hopefully they will see your thread and help you, OP. Otherwise, try doing a search for old threads, maybe? I know little myself, I'm afraid. Thanks

CBD consumer group uk/eu on Facebook - excellent resource and sound advice on CBD use and approved suppliers. I really recommend it, they can advise and guide you. You have to request to join the group and it can take a while as it's run by volunteers but they will help x

salsmum · 14/04/2018 01:33

Thank you for you advice I'll look up that group it just seems a shame that there are so many folks as well as my daughter who could benefit but instead of sharing our story with others it has become our 'dirty little secret ' which makes me really uncomfortable.

And there is zero need to give her it in secret - it is perfectly legal! The group I recommended has a great list of approved suppliers throughout UK and parts of Europe. They'll be able to advise on the type of oil, the strain of cannabis and the correct dosage for your daughter. You might even be able to chat with people who have direct or personal experience with the same condition. And you can arm yourself with the relevant information, in document form if needs be, to show your Gp and the carers. Don't despair! It's a great thing you're doing for your daughter x

EllenRipley · 14/04/2018 01:43

I think the reality of CBD use is coming more to the fore these days, hopefully there will be change. People are just ignorant - it's a small but thriving industry as far as CBD manufacturers and suppliers goes and there are thousands of folk using it for all manner of conditions. And there's science to back up the oil's efficacy. It's not like it's being produced and sold in secret. Stand firm! I got some for my parents who both have health conditions, my neighbour is using it as supplemental treatment for cancer (with great success) and I'm now using it to help with menopausal symptoms. Wishing you luck! X

AnnaMagnani · 14/04/2018 09:28

You don't have to give it to her in secret, it's a perfectly legal food supplement.

Do you see your daughter everyday to give it to her?

The care agency can only give a prescribed medication with the GP's authorisation but they can give any food supplement your daughter want just with her say so. I suspect they are freaking out just because it says cannabis in the title but have got the wrong end of the stick.

It's not fair enough that they have said no - you daughter is a fully capacitous adult with the right to make decisions about what supplements she has. I'd take this back to them pointing out it's a legal mainstream product on sale in Holland and Barrett.

Ps4hell · 14/04/2018 09:32

It's legal.

I vape CBD oil everyday for my chronic anxiety. My mood is completely different than before I started.

People freak because they think it's illegal. It isn't weed. There's no THC in it.

BrownTurkey · 14/04/2018 09:42

It might be a good question to ask the LADO (Local authority designated officer - role for oversight of safeguarding etc) - provide them with the relevant information about legality and the status of the supplement as others have indicated here, and ask about your daughters right to have legal supplements given by carers. They will have access to legal advice, human rights knowledge etc.

Doublevodka · 14/04/2018 09:43

Ps4hell where do you buy your oil for vaping?

Ps4hell · 14/04/2018 10:21

In the vape shops

They do from 100mg/10ml up to over 1000mg/10ml.

I buy whatever strength 10ml and add it to a 50ml bottle of flavoured vape.

And I don't have nicotine vape.

It's really helped.

Doublevodka · 14/04/2018 14:33

Thanks for the info. Just off to buy some.

SealSong · 14/04/2018 14:47

Holland and Barrett sell CBD oil now. It's getting very popular.

pickleface · 14/04/2018 14:54

The oil from the cbd brothers is by far the best quality I have found and I've tried a few. I used cbd oil to wean myself off anti depressants and beta blockers and I think it has also reduced my migraines.

salsmum · 14/04/2018 23:53

I have managed to give my dad a few drops each day by going over to her apartment in the morning after work (Carer out of the room) my Dd had a letter sent through to add to her care plan for her live in carers attention (from the agency) it states do not under any circumstances give client oil and if you see next of kin administer please ring agency immediately (printed in bold red) also added please record any changes in health. My dd is supposed to have 3 drops twice a day but is only having half the dose because it'd otherwise be too obvious if I 'pop in' twice a day and not once ...God anyone would think I was giving her crack. I hate it but less than I hate seeing my once happy, pain free dd suffering with such awful pain.

Sorry typo dd not dad.

I use CBD oil, the Holland and Barrett stuff is weak & expensive! I use CBD Brothers website for my orders, they are helpful and often send samples of the different strains/strengths to try

EllenRipley · 15/04/2018 00:49

What, have they got you under surveillance?! You need to speak to the agency and find out on what grounds and under whose authority they've directed the carers to do this. Unless there's some kind of backstory where they believe she's at risk from you somehow or that legally you have no parental responsibility/direct contact with her, or there's something about her condition that you don't know then I'm not sure how they can prevent you from helping your daughter take a supplement. That said, I don't know much about her condition, do they think you could be giving her something against her will? Or is it purely because they're misinformed about CBD? You should also check any contraindications with any other medication she's on. Maybe you need some legal advice on this. There could be more complex reasons behind this that no one here can comment on so you need to be as informed as possible about CBD and the care agency's position on this. It must be so frustrating and upsetting if it's helping your daughter, I hope you can find a way through it x

www.cerebralpalsyguidance.com/cerebral-palsy/treatment/medical-marijuana/

This relates to medical marijuana laws in the US which are different to the UK. There's other articles if you google - might be useful to take to the GP? X

EllenRipley · 15/04/2018 00:55

(P.s not to suggest you haven't already done your own research, I was just googling to see if I could find anything useful!)

salsmum · 15/04/2018 01:03

Thank you ellen, no, no back story in fact my dd lived with me up until a couple of years ago without any carers, no safeguarding issues nor NC issues either, interestingly enough it was cbd brothers that was recommended to me by paramedic but I'd read on some reviews that they don't pick up the phone and I knew I'd have quite a number of questions to ask so went for cbd oil in my local region ( sorry can't say where it'll out me) IF I get reported to safeguarding that's fine I'll go to court if need be to give my dd the quality of life she deserves.. we are seeing her consultant in a weeks time I hope and pray he agrees to give us the letter we desperately need.

I bought some drops the other week. I tried them, but they taste like a rotting swamp! I found if, rather than put them under my tongue, I smeared them at the very back of my tongue then I didn't taste them (much!). I haven't noticed them help much with my chronic pain though.

Years ago, while waiting for dx, I used to smoke dope sometimes and it really did help a lot. I stopped because I didn't like the psycho effects. MS made me sleepy and made my brain quite fuzzy enough without my having to pay for illegal drugs which had the same effect, so I stopped. The prescribed meds aren't as effective though, and you have to keep upping the dosages too.

Emily7708 · 15/04/2018 01:18

You can buy decent CBD oil in capsule form from CBD Brothers. I would buy that and put it in her prescription medication bottle instead of the painkillers so they will give it to her.

Emily7708 · 15/04/2018 01:21

Or put the capsules in a multivitamin bottle.

salsmum · 15/04/2018 01:48

I have thought of that but think without a doctors label or letter even multi vitamins come under medication ( dd bought well woman tabs and Carer won't give) we are in a catch 22 can't change agencies because the local boroughs care funding is so poor and they won't increase funding.

OP posts:
Emily7708 · 15/04/2018 01:59

Can you swap them with the meds in her prescription bottle?
