Sudden severe pelvic pain that feels like labour pains

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 16:39

An hour ago I suddenly had severe cramping in lower pelvis as if I was about to give birth. Except I'm not pregnant.

I was bowled over writhering on the floor in pain and called 999. I am waiting in a&e at the moment. Pain has subsided and bearable after taking paracetamol.

That sudden and excruciating pain was frightening and I haven't experienced anything like it. I felt like I was going to haemmorage but nothing.

I've missed a few periods recently (not sure of the reason) and have a pap smear scheduled for next week.

Anyone sufferered similar?

Hope you're ok OP, sounds like you might have an ovarian cyst?

NellytheElephant18 · 02/04/2018 16:42

Are you 100% sure you aren’t pregnant??

ScreamingValenta · 02/04/2018 16:43

It sounds like the pain I suffered with ovarian cysts and endometriosis. I hope they can help in A&E Flowers.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2018 16:44

Sounds like the pain my friend had with an ovarian cyst. Hope you get seen quickly.

violet0805 · 02/04/2018 16:45

I have PCOS and have been told to watch out for this as it may be a cyst bursting. I went from jan-aug last year without a period, that's when I was ant for a scan and they found my PCOS. Hope you feel better soon x

FancyNewBeesly · 02/04/2018 16:46

Endometriosis
Ovarian cyst
Ruptured ovarian cyst
Ovarian torsion
Ectopic pregnancy

These would be my suspicions (after 23 years of gynae problems). They should do a scan. If they find nothing, they will discharge you but that does NOT mean there isn’t a problem. If that happens, insist on a gynae referral for further investigation.

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 16:47

Thanks for your replies. Defo not pregnant. Haven't had sex for year's.

So if ovarian cyst what would be the course of action?

OP posts:
SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2018 16:56

Depends, my friend needed hers removed. Not cancerous, just large.

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 17:05

Have just had bloods. Now a two hour wait for results. But been told that given public holiday there is no one to do an ultrasound unless it is an emergency.

OP posts:
eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 18:24

Being discharged with stronger meds and told to go back to GP for ultrasound referral as it sounded like gyaenological and they can't scan at the mo as not life threatening.

OP posts:
SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2018 18:33

Go back in if pain returns as cysts can rupture.

anxious2017 · 02/04/2018 18:37

Did you use the loo afterwards? IBS feels like labour.

EllenRipley · 02/04/2018 18:43

If it's a ruptured cyst then there is the potential of systemic infection, which definitely needs medical attention, but presumably your bloods show no sign of this, so that's a positive! And sometimes cysts will rupture and you'll get no serious problems beyond the pain (I think that might depend on size and type of cyst). Did you have to give a urine sample? There's certainly other gynae conditions that could cause a lot of pain so getting an ultrasound referral is important, can you see a GP asap? If there's more sudden pain and you get a fever or any other symptoms don't hesitate to go back to A&E. X

FancyNewBeesly · 02/04/2018 19:26

Make an emergency appointment with your GP tomorrow. You need a scan ASAP with that level of pain. It’s appalling they discharge people in this level of pain without performing a scan.

Basically, if you’ve had a cyst that’s ruptured, there’s risk of infection but sounds like they’ve checked for that.

My concern would be ovarian torsion. If you have a very large cyst the weight of it can literally twist your ovary until the blood supply is cut off and the ovary dies. This is extremely dangerous.

Is the pain still unbearable or has it eased off? I had a ruptured cyst years ago and it was an explosion of pain so severe I passed out, but after an hour or so the pain subsided mostly.

Have you had pelvic pain before? How old are you? Any issues with your periods? Pr BlYou don’t have to answer obviously but answer

FancyNewBeesly · 02/04/2018 19:29

Sorry, phone died

Any problems with your bladder or bowel?

No need to answer here but these are the things a doctor should be asking you to assess what’s going on.

Do you know what they tested your blood for? I’d maybe ask for a CA-125 blood test - it’s a marker than can indicate a variety of things from endometriosis to ovarian cancer, but what they do next if high levels are found will depend on your age and other symptoms.

FancyNewBeesly · 02/04/2018 19:30

(Not saying for a second you have ovarian cancer BTW! My mum had it and she had no Pain whatsoever so sudden pelvic pain wouldn’t be an obvious symptom - just mentioned it as sometimes when people hear about CA-125 levels being raised they immediately think ovarian cancer and actually it can be raised in others conditions too)

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 19:44

Dr. Had a poke around and said had I had a twisted ovary then i would be in alot more pain Urine was clear and given co-codemol. Blood showed some inflammation but he said as pain was alleviated easily with otc medication then it wasn't that serious. To monitor and come back if it gets worse. He checked all previous ultrasounds on my file and nothing had been picked up in the past. I have cysts on my gall bladder but he said that was too high up.

I had to ask the Dr twice if 'normal' cycle pain would be so severe as to feel like I was about to give birth to my insides and he said yes.

So off home to rest after that awful experience being non the wiser.

I had this and it was a ruptured cyst. By the time they could fit me in for an ultrasound it had shrunk. The pain didn't come back after that day and I haven't needed any treatment. So you might be fine.

GeorgeTheHippo · 02/04/2018 19:46

Ovarian cyst,sorry.

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 19:56

To answer your questions Fancy I stopped googling my symptoms.when I got to ovarian cancer. Bowel issues I've had stomach ulcers in the past with stress and it built up over a prolonged period.

This came on suddenly. An explosion of pain like 15th say that I was crawling to the front door to get help from my neighbour because 999 couldn't send an ambulance. I am turning 40 later this year and feel like I am falling apart.

Am exhausted now. But no pain at all.

Thank you everyone for all your advice and hand holding. Stops me from googling the bad stuff!

My friend was also crawling with a ruptured cyst. It does really sound like that so I hope you get an ultrasound soon.

YesitsJacqueline · 02/04/2018 20:02

Hi op. It sounds like my ruptured ovarian cyst i had before Xmas. Very painful. They gave me cocodamol and anti biotics
Hope you feel better soon and get some answers

lattewith3shotsplease · 02/04/2018 20:04

OP,
How are your bowel habits ......severe constipation can cause this level of pain too.

eatmysocks23 · 02/04/2018 21:08

I'm like clock work with my bowels and have already been earlier today with no issue.

What gets me now that I have time to think...999 just hung up on my DC9 when I was no longer able to speak and lying on the floor crying. She was telling him to call 111 and they would assess me and then hung up on him. He dialled 111 but then was put on hold. After a 30 min conversation with my neighbour who had now taken over, they said they would send an ambulance. I waited another 40 min and called back and they said there was none available. This is with me screeching in 'labour' pains.my neighbour had originally told them that they could drive me to the hospital but 111 said to wait.

I've never had to use the 999 service but shudder to think had it been say a ruptured appendix or something more severe what the outcome would have been.
