Have just lost a stone ish on WW and felt compelled to change my habits to prevent the weight creeping on and to try and improve health etc too...
Have read ti and bought a few bizarre supplements and things, to see how it goes...
Has anyone else given it a go or doing it too?
The lady at Holland And Barrett said it had done wonders for their business!!

Thanks Tammy, they called today but I asked her to call back tomorrow. Hope she will. Also, is it very expensive? Obviously I have to weigh up how much it will cost against simply starving myself!

Do you reckon "You are what you eat" is a good book? I was going to buy it in the hope of getting some tips to improve our general diet.

Lowryn · 09/08/2004 19:41

Have a look at her website:
\linkdrgillianmckeith.com{}
It has a shop for the weird and wonderful ingredients...I am saved!

Lowryn · 09/08/2004 19:41

Ah pants, my link thing didn't work

Piffleoffagus · 09/08/2004 19:45

It should be brilliant for b/f as you would be meeting all your hutritional targets more easily, by eating foods which are easily absorbed, but you do need to ensure you eat enough calorie wise while b/f
I too am off to find some more wild and wonderful ingredianets
PS Spirulina is effing amazing stuff, took some convincing, take it in apple juice.
Feel a squillion times better loads of mid day energy no slumps
hmmm yum seeds and little sprouts.

Bought the book via Tesco.com less than £8. Although it is out of stock at the moment - approx 7-10 days delivery. I had a quick flick though it in the bookshop & it looked interesting so I'm going to give it a go. I just need some willpower !!

Lowryn · 09/08/2004 19:52

Anyone got a second hand sprouter for sale?
They're £75 on her website
I know you can just use a jam jar, but I am very lazy.
Do you think eating bean sprouts from Tescos count?

Maisey1 · 09/08/2004 19:53

I bought the book after 1 episode and found it really difficult to stick to and that I was really, really hungary for 2 weeks and only lost 3lbs. Also found myself cooking one meal for me one for DD and one for DH and not being able to go out for a meal with the girls !!! Have switched to weight watchers and lost 7lbs in 2 weeks ! But my mum followed YAWYE and lost a stone in 2 weeks !

Maisey1 · 09/08/2004 19:59

Lowryn sprouter avaliable from Lakeland and it only costs £4.50 !

Ixel · 16/08/2004 17:51

Just found this thread, and am reviving it to ask a question! In the book, does it have a recipe for the quinoa bread on last weeks episode? Could someone tell me! Sadly, I just eat it as a brekkie cereal, and am getting a bit sick of it! Am not going to buy the book until you're all fed up of it and donate a copy to a charity shop . Far too pricey!

Piffleoffagus · 16/08/2004 18:01

I will look tonight for you Ixel
try sprouting them, rather yummy

can u only get quinoa from health food shops? or does tesco et al have it?

enid · 16/08/2004 18:25

I think Gillian Mackeith is the most charmless person I have ever seen on the television. My mum says that when you get to 40 you get the face you deserve and I can believe that is true in GK's case - her miserable, carping personality is etched on her face.

Sorry, I know I am being horrid and personal but I watched this prog last week for the first time and found it quite upsetting - she was so nasty to the people on it!

She looks like she has never actually enjoyed a meal in her life.

I don't like her . Sorry.

I like wholegrains though, and I take spirulina .

Piffleoffagus · 16/08/2004 19:00

I don't like her much either, but then she is not there to be liked, what she says is true. These people she slates are well aware that they are killing themselves, so she has to be fairly aggressive to make them do it and stick to it.
I'm not in this for the weight loss at all. I'm in it for vitality and thanks to sprouts and spirulina, I feel bloody good already!!

Moomin · 16/08/2004 19:04

her persona is much exaggerated for the tv, though. Tv directors love all that and think they're going to discover the next anne robinson/aggie and kim/simon cowell, etc. Nasty and schoolmarmish is fashionable at the mo, IMO.
Forget the tv prog and concentrate on the main argument of the book, I say : if you eat crap you'll end up feeling (and maybe even looking) like crap.
Dh and I have just embarked on it this week, to lose a bit of weight and to help ourselves better and less tired. A lot of the food she recommends is just common sense and some is also widening our knowledge about food we don't usually come across/use everyday.
And as for how she looks - she can't help looking a bit boss-eyed and not your usual rosemary conley-type. Don't mean to sound like a disciple but eating well is the way forward I think and if more people are educated by this and sling faddy and unhealthy crap like atkins or slimfast, then all for the good!
Rant over!

whizzz · 16/08/2004 19:05

Still waiting for my book to arrive. Feeling healthy already eating sunflower seeds ! Still havent managed to knock the wine on the head though.

Lowryn · 16/08/2004 19:05

Yes, I want the quinoa bread recipe too! It's not fair that her book has the most minimum of recipes. I bought my quinoa from Holland and Barratt, but there is a nice online store on her website.
You used to be able to buy a pack of sprouting beans from sainsburys a few years back, I would happily pay someone to sprout beans for me to eat!

What does she mean about eating clover sprouts...the stuff that grows in your garden? How do you get them???

Tinker · 16/08/2004 19:13

I agree that eating well is the way forward but the programme would be a lot more convincing if they didn't use such extreme lardarses with such blatantly appalling diets. Wouldn't make such good tv though would it?

whizzz · 16/08/2004 19:26

I agree the people who own up to just eating trash all day (the one last week that ate half a pound of butter everyday !!) are bound to beoverweight - what about 'normal people' ? The book does look interesting though & I will give the basics a go

froot · 16/08/2004 19:36

whizzz · 16/08/2004 19:41

Well I saw the one last week. I always forget what day it on though so usually just catch the end of it. It well have just finished as i've just checked on channel4.com

ernest · 17/08/2004 09:57

i think last one tonight at 8.30.

for what it's worth, I agree she'sschoomarmish, but I don't think she's mean or nasty at all. Nothing like AR with unnecessary bitching. She's just saying it how it is, and in the case of the woman with so much butter, I thought she was quite polite!

Would be useful to see not only more 'normal' people, but also families. I started out really well with my kids but feel their diet is slowly getting more limited, poor quality and little variety, and they're much more resistant to new things.

ripley · 17/08/2004 17:46

I've been on it for a week and I definately notice weight loss. My skin feels better and I have so much energy that I'm doind things I have put off for months. There is a forum on the channel 4 website which is really informative you are what you eat Apparently there is a recipe book coming out in January - not quick enough because I want some quinoa bread too!

You can get quinoa in Asda and Waitrose (didn't notice it in Tesco or Sainsbury's), but I also got a lot from Holland and Barrett which are great at the moment because there is loads of stuff on sale - big bags of sunflower seeds for 99p. My 2 year old daughter has been snacking on them! I found a jar of miso in Sainsbury's as well as flax seeds. Try a health food store for sprouters too - we've been having mung beans, alfafa, chickpeas sprouted on out salads and apparently it's the most nutritious way to eat them.

BTW I had a takeaway chinese on Sat night - tried to go for the healthiest options - and I felt so ill the next day. It does clean out your system!

Moomin · 17/08/2004 19:32

ripley - have you adopted it all whole-heartedly or just adapted it to your own diet? or are you on the detox? That looked a bit drastic for me at the moment!
Dh and I are on day 2 of this and have decided to concentrate on the 'foods of abundance'; eat the 'so-so' foods occasionally; stick to banning to 'no-no' foods and are trying to food-combine.

ripley · 17/08/2004 19:49

I'm not being strict (had some sausages today!) and I haven't done the detox. I think it just encourages you to eat more of the right foods eg fruit veg pulses and seeds. I've cut out bread and dairy and I try to food combin, but my favourite food in the morning is wholegrain rice pops (no added anything) with unsweetened calcium soy milk, linseed, flax seed, banana and strawberry and sometimes apple. Yum!

Moomin · 17/08/2004 20:00

Yeh, i've found the 'leave 2hrs between eating this and leave 3 hrs before eating that' very hard. I still can't believe i'll lose any weight when i'm eating an avocado a day and snacking on nuts. Are you taking any of the supplements?
