Hysterectomy worries

bertieallsort · 14/03/2018 10:11

I'm having a hysterectomy in the next few weeks & I'm getting more & more anxious about it all, the physical & mental side of it. But right now my anxiety is mainly about intimacy after the surgery, im so worried that it'll change that part of my relationship. I know this is mainly my issue, my dh is being brilliant about it & says he loves me & it'll be fine but I can't help thinking I might ruin it all.

I guess I'm just wanting some advice from those who've been through it, anything I've tried to read online has been a bit scary (hystersisters etc) but my logical side knows people are more likely to share negative experiences than positive ones. I don't need any gory details (this one of first posts so I don't want anyone thinking I'm a troll or a voyeur!). I would just appreciate knowing whether I'm working myself into a panic over nothing.
Any advice about what I need for hospital or at home during my recovery would be appreciated too.

Im finding it uncomfortable to sit upright not painful as such more sore. I have avoided wooden dining chairs tho!

Thymeout · 19/04/2018 07:27

I had vertical incision plus ovaries, and massive tumour. Didn't need prescription meds, just paracetamol and ibuprofen on rigid routine. Never had much abdo pain - except when I coughed etc - and was fine walking. But standing still gave me back ache for weeks afterwards. Sitting on dining chairs was the same. Couldn't manage more than a couple of hours even 2-3 months later.

I think back muscles have to take over while abdo is healing. My motto was never to sit and rest when I could lie down instead.

Thanks Thymeout that os good advice!
Seems you feel better one day then the next washed out and sore again.
What's everyone doing about time off work? My initial note is for 4 weeks, then have to go to dr if I need another.

noimnottryingforagirl · 19/04/2018 08:28

Zazu44 I was given 6 weeks although every nurse I've spoken to told me I'd need 8 (my Job is not physical at all), I will go back and extend if needed. You only get one chance to heal and to be honest Im really gonna take it slow. I've had such a long road to get here and so much pain I'm not risking further problems for anything! Thymeout why sit when u can lie - rules to live by!!

Zazu44 · 19/04/2018 10:12

Yes I will go back and get an extension, physio said 8 maybe 12 my job can be quite physical. Let's hope the warm weather continues.
I'm considering going on a bus today! 😳

How's everyone doing? I'm slowly improving I think but still having a lot of cramping, also very bloated especially at end of day. Still taking paracetamol and ibuprofen through and codeine at night is this normal? Thought pain would be gone by now-12days post op?

Zazu44 · 27/04/2018 08:18

Hi noimnottryingforagirl sorry for late reply, Im a bit up and down, walked too far Wednesday and it hurt like hell afterwards! Also going away this weekend so hopefully won't overdo it.
How are you feeling now?
And how are you bertie?

bertieallsort · 28/04/2018 11:37

Hi all, how are you all doing? Been a bit chaotic at home at the moment (none to do with op luckily!).

Been doing really well so far, still getting the odd twinges but I'm being good and knowing it's just my body telling me when I'm doing too much so taking the hint and putting my feet up for a bit. It's hard not to try to do too much, I keep forgetting and being told by my gp and family to remember that I'm 5 weeks post op! Right now I think I'm being more frustrated by people fussing around me, I know it comes with love but as I said above unless I try little things I'm never going to know what I'm capable of and I'll end up stuck on a sofa for ever more!

Oh and saw internal bruising mentioned, I had bruising come up around my incisions 2-3 weeks after surgery. My mam is a nurse and just said it was just the internal bruising coming right up and it's easy to forget/underestimate just how much bruising you have inside. But mine did ease off pretty quickly.

Hi all I think I'm beginning to turn a corner cramps have lessened and trying to walk more still far more tired/thick headed than I'd have expected! Still a way to go and sounds like we all should remember we've had major surgery and take time to get better. I know I'm finding it hard to accept that x

Zazu44 · 15/05/2018 08:50

How is everyone?

noimnottryingforagirl · 16/05/2018 16:46

Hi zazu44 I'm OK but got a uti which has set me back a bit still fairly crampy and tired but hrt increased so hopefully that will help! How are u? How u doing bertieallsort?

bertieallsort · 28/05/2018 16:40

didn't realise it was so long since i last posted! I'm doing really well, honestly am still shocked that i've had such a good, trouble free recovery. I don't get a post op check or anything so I'm even thinking of starting the c25k running programme this week. I know i'm still a few weeks off the magic 12 week mark but i really think I'm ready and I'm sensible. if it feels too much i'll stop.
how's everyone else doing?
