Dd(3) has really bad D&V, when to take her to the doctor??

The poor little mite is puking and pooing every hour and can't even keep water down. Dss has gone to the chemist to get dioralyte but I am wondering when do I take her to the docs? She is too ill to take out of the house atm and I am worried she will become badly dehydrated.
Any advice?

any other symtoms?, id ring nhs direct and go by their advice given her diagnosis.
going to be pretty hard to get her to doc/primecare if she has constant D&V tho, dont suppose they'd do a call out?

mosschops30 · 01/05/2007 16:34

how old is she?

Mumpbump · 01/05/2007 16:34

Ring NHS direct and they will ask you a series of questions to determine how dehydrated she is. A good indicator is whether the skin "springs back" when you pinch it. My mum got very badly dehydrated recently and her skin was like paper and stayed "standing" when I let go. Otherwise, keep an eye on how frequently she is passing water.

Only let her have a tiny sip of water every few minutes, rather than a big drink. Dioralyte should help...

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 16:38

She's 3.

what about things like ice pops?, does she have temp too? she may be able to keep these down as they can only sip/suck them and taste nicer than water for her..bless

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 16:43

She is refusing the dioralyte on the grounds that it is yucky, which it is admittedly. she has just drunk a little water so I will see how that goes down.

try flat sprite or 7up diluted with water.

or flat ginger ale - NOT the kind w/artificial sweetners in it.

mix the diralite with fruit juice, even small amounts will help

Mumpbump · 01/05/2007 16:49

The doctor told me flat coke was a good alternative to dioralyte!

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 16:55

Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated. It is the first time she has been really il iykwim. She was mildly sick with chicken pox but nothing like today, it is horrible to see the poor thing so miserable.
I am currently cooling some Sprite that I have boiled so she might take that.
Meanwhile the pile of dirty laundry is getting so big that I think I will have to take it to the laundrette

My ds had this last week and we were given pretty much the advice you have been given here. He couldn't keep water down but was actually still weeing so they said he was ok. I got him to have ice lollies, they didn't all stay down but at least they tasted nice for him. The dr said nowadays they recommend trying to get something with some calorific value down them becasue it is easier absorbed by the bowel and therefore rehydrates them quicker. After about 12 hours he started to keep the water down and then gradually over time juice and then food. Best of British is all I will say, I had a huge pile of washing and the machine seemed to be on all day.
Hope she is feeling better soon.

Oh - I forgot to mention that the doctor also told me that diarrhoea strips away a coating from the intestine so it is more difficult to process fat. So when she can eat something again, make sure it is all starchy, low-fat food for a few days. Common-sense, I think, anyway!

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 17:18

Well she has kept the water down for 40 minutes and I have given her some Sprite and a corner of toast. Fingers crossed.

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 17:20

Yes I think I have just cleaned up the coating of an intestine off the inside of her pj's [boak]
Yes the low-fat thing makes sense thanks.

Sympathy DD ( 13 mths) just getting better after terrible bout of D&V. Doc gave her anti vomit ( It was Italian ) and she also had a temp ( day2,3).
We gave her sugar and water and then with the rehydrating fluids it was via a tea spoon. BUt she diddn't like them so I did my own with apple juice / sugary fruit juice and a pinch of salt.
I would call doc if she can't keep anything down by the morning surely they do house calls when needed?
Hope she feels better soon.

Carmenere · 01/05/2007 21:05

She has kept a digestive biscuit down for about 3 hours now so we'll see how she goes.

PinkChick · 01/05/2007 22:16

Carmenere · 02/05/2007 10:33

Well she woke up for a drink a couple of times last night but she diddn't puke or poo again so I thought we were ok.....so I gave her a piece of toast and some water this am and she has just puked it up EVERYWHERE

I'm taking DD#2 aged 13mths to the doc today. She started vomiting Sunday but stopped that Monday morning now has horrendous diarrhoea that is not settling. Finding it really hard to get anything into her at all either.
Sorry not much help to you, but you and your DD have my sympathy. Hope things improve soon.

Carmenere · 02/05/2007 10:42

Oh poor you. dd is taking teaspoons of boiled and cooled Sprite and she kept a digestive down last night. I might try her with half a biscuit later on but if she continues to puke I'll have to take her to the docs.

Mumpbump · 02/05/2007 11:42

I know it is very hard for them, but if you can just stick to liquids for a while, you might find it helps. I know when ds had diarrhoea VERY badly (hence my wisdom about D&V bugs!!), the doctor said nothing other than water and dioralyte, not even formula! 24 hours of starvation won't kill them as long as you can keep getting some sort of calorific liquid into them...

WanderingTrolley · 02/05/2007 11:50

agree with mumbump - though if it's not calorific liquid it's not a disaster. Don't worry if she's not eating, her tummy might need a rest.

Boiled Sprite: Carmenere are you Irish? It was Lucozade in my day....
