Bladder Infection

user18765455 · 26/01/2018 19:09

Hello, I just wanna to talk out the worry i'm feeling because the gp said I have a bladder infection (which a urine sample proved) but it feels so much worse then previous ones with different symptoms.

Last year I had 3 reoccurring bouts of cystitis which oddly always came up as negative from the urine samples but the symptoms (stinging when peeing, needing to urinate constantly then only a dribble coming out) wouldn't go away unless I took antibiotics.

This time my symptoms don't feel anything like before but I've been given the same antibiotics as before. On Tuesday night I had pain in the pelvis area and it went away quite quickly. On Wednesday my pelvis felt tender and Wednesday night I had awful pain in the central pelvis area and it was tender both sides. It was the kind of pain where you don't want to move or straighten your legs because that makes it hurt more. I went to bed the pain subsided. I also took a pregnancy test just to rule that out because I have a coil (which I've never had any problems with) and I had an ectopic pregnancy 2 years ago so worry more about pelvis pain.

Thursday morning I woke feeling ok and didn't have any pain all day so thought whatever it was had gone away. Then last night my dp and I started intercourse and I had to tell him to stop immediately after about 2/3 minutes because I can only describe it as the sensation you get when you feel a contraction coming during labour. He stopped immediately and I rolled over and entered into excruciating pain, I felt light headed, I felt like I was going to be sick and the pain was like Labour! When it started to subside I did manage to fall asleep.

Today i have felt tender both sides of my pelvis and the centre feels "heavy." I've had no urge to pee more nor have I had any stinging/burning which is why I was surprised when the urine came up positive for infection.

I know symptoms vary for infections but the thing that's worrying me is the pain I experienced after intercourse because I've never felt pain like it during/after sex. Is this something that can happen with a bladder infection? My gp was quite rushed today so it was pretty much give me antibiotics for infection and come back if pain persists so I didn't really get the chance to talk further.

Thank you.

Also I have been with my dp for nearly 2 years and I was tested for STIs when I had my coil fitted a year ago so I know I don't have any STIs.

I would be going back asap OP. You are right, this doesn't sound like a standard bladder infection. I don't know who you phone at this time of night other than an out of hours dr but I suspect they will say to give the antibiotics time to work.

But if it was me in your place, I'd be concerned.

user18765455 · 26/01/2018 19:26

I fear if I phone 111 or out of hours gp they will just say let the antibiotics run it's course. So I think Monday I may go back to the gp if I feel bad still.

I kept trying to say to the gp this doesn't feel like before and the symptoms are very different but I think he was just looking at the positive infection swab from the urine sample and telling me antibiotics should clear it all up.

My tummy also feels bloated Sad

I may just be writing to myself here Grin but I'll talk anyway.

Is it possible to have a bladder infection without any symptoms of burning when peeing nor any sensation to wee more nor abnormal looking/smelling wee?

Today it just feels like pressure in my pelvis area, more to the right side (although I don't think I have symptoms of appendicitis) when I walk.

I feel nervous to phone 111 because I always get tongue tied and anxious on the phone and not really sure there is anything they can do at the weekend anyway.

I would try 111 and see what they say - I find out of hours better than the normal doctors.

I also wonder with 4 utis in a year if you should be referred to urology at your local hospital for further testing though I might be being over cautious there.

The thing that is worrying me the most is that pain I had during/after sex on Thursday night. It just wasn't normal! It was a real severe cramping feeling and it was frightening. Like Labour pains. I don't have any symptoms for a bladder infection other than pelvic pain and that appears to have moved mainly to the right side now. It's dull and achey but oddly not painful to the touch?

When I had cystitis last year I had:

The peeing razor blades feeling.

The need to wee constantly then only a dribble come out.

A general feeling of being unwell.

Urine test negative for infection but symptoms wouldn't go away with antibiotics.

This time my symptoms have been;

Cramping in the pelvis area 2 evenings in a row.

Severe pain during/after sex. Pain was from deep penetration rather than the opening/vulva part.

An aching feeling in my pelvis when I walk around which has moved to the right side more now. The pain isn't really there when I lay down and it doesn't hurt when I prod my tummy area.

I've got a loss of appetite too.

I have ruled out pregnancy from a test (I have a copper coil) and STIs.

I don't have a temperature so I don't think it is appendicitis.

You sound quite ill. Ring 111 and tell them what you've said here.

PenguinsandPandas · 28/01/2018 13:54

Definitely get in touch with doctor asap and I think ectopic pregnancy doesn't always give a positive pregnancy test so mention that. It could just be a uti but best to make sure its nothing more serious.

Thymeout · 28/01/2018 14:40

Could it be connected to your coil?

Alternatively, post op from a radical hysterectomy, I had one episode when it was as if my muscles had gone into spasm, like having cramp in your leg. I felt as if I wanted to pee, but couldn't. Then, when the pain subsided, everything was OK again. It only happened once, but it was a v acute pain.

Definitely get medical advice.

user18765455 · 28/01/2018 17:11

I rang 111 this morning and they said to go straight to out of hours clinic which is connected to the hospital. I went there and the gp was so lovely, far more patient then my regular overstretched gp surgery. She thought it might be appendicitis so I got sent up to a ward, blood tests said it wasn't appendicitis so I have to stay in overnight to wait for an ultrasound scan/gynaecologists who aren't there until tomorrow morning. 😐

So still none the wiser? 🤔

Thymeout I have mentioned the coil to them and asked if it could be that but everyone is very dismissive that it could possibly be the oil x

It's great that they're taking it seriously and keeping you in. Hope you get an unscary answer tomorrow.

The infection in my urine is clear now so I knew it wasn't just a bog standard bladder infection

PenguinsandPandas · 28/01/2018 17:26

That's great they are taking it seriously. Out of hours is far better here than regular doctors, strange but good to know its available.

user18765455 · 28/01/2018 20:09

Thanks 😃 Scan tomorrow and hopefully I'll see a gynaecologist. Otherwise it's sit tight for the night and wait.

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 28/01/2018 22:35

You could have a pelvic infection from the coil though this is rare.

You could also have painful bladder syndrome, which can be triggered by an infection (urine) and used to be known as interstitial cystitis. In the meantime do not drink coffee, tea, alcohol and fruit juices- drink only bottled or boiled water because anything else- even fizzy water- can cause bladder pain.

Hope you get some answers.

Worldsworstcook · 29/01/2018 08:34

Thinking on this this morning! Wonder could it be kidney stones? Sore pee, sore sex, sore low pain 🤔

You will tell us as soon as the gynaecologist leaves the room though won't you?

Angelakilmartin , I don't think OP has a diagnosis yet, or at least not one she has shared so far, but can I just say a heartfelt Hello and Thank You from me? I read your book Understanding Cystitis about half a century ago, and you really helped me.

PollyPerky · 29/01/2018 21:06

The coil string is but one of hundreds of bladder infection causes. It can harbour bacteria travelling from the anal opening.

Sorry but this is impossible. The strings from the coil are cut to a couple of cms and are tucked way up by the cervix. They are nowhere near the vaginal opening or the urethra.

user18765455 · 29/01/2018 21:38

Well after lots of tests they have all come back clear. So whilst it's good it's still frustrating because I am still none the wiser. They have made a referral to the outpatient gynaecologists and said they have more specialised equipment to investigate. She mentioned PID as a possibility maybe? I mentioned the coil but I think they all have to take an oath in defending the coil because everyone dismisses the idea.

I am considering looking into Sterilisation too.
