Chest pain - when to see a GP

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 15:11

Today I have bad chest pain whenever I breathe in, it's mainly on the right hand side of my chest and goes over my shoulder to my upper back too.

What could this be? If it's still there in the morning would it be a bit dramatic to phone GP?

I feel fine otherwise

Bump

Could it be gall bladder problems?

Fairylea · 18/01/2018 17:03

Well according to the nhs website chest pain should always be investigated urgently. But if you say it’s only when you breathe in and have no other symptoms I would be inclined to think it could be anything from asthma, to a chest infection or a pulled muscle. I would definitely see your gp asap. You don’t want to mess about with chest pain.

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 17:04

I think it might be a pulled muscle - I have two young children who I'm constantly carrying about so maybe that?

I also have asthma by my breathing is ok.

My mum has had 2 pulmonary embolisms, if it's still sore in the morning I think I'll go to GO just to be safe

If you tense your stomach muscles and then move, does it still hurt as much?

Emelene · 18/01/2018 17:30

I would consider going to OOH GP tonight, or phoning 111 for advice. It's likely to be fine as you say, but chest pain can be serious.

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 17:31

I've just tensed my stomach muscles and moved - pain much worse.

A major risk factor for a PE is a close family member having one.

I really would call 111 but if you want to wait to speak to the GP I’d ask for an emergency app and mention about your Mum.

You just can’t be too careful

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 17:50

Thanks - think I'll wait until the girls are both in bed then phone 111

Blood clot on lung

Fluid on lung

Pneumonia

If you ring 111 with chest pain, they will call an ambulance....
And rightly so

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 17:56

Ok I'm worrying now

It's not horrendous pain - surely one of the above would be really bad pain?

I'm bf DD2 so can't be away from her overnight

OP posts:
LondonLassInTheCountry · 18/01/2018 18:10

Chest pain shouldn't ever be left

If you had one of the above, you would need medication.

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 18:31

Just remembered I slept with DD2 in my arms for a couple hours last night, so maybe it is muscular?

OP posts:
Footle · 18/01/2018 18:46

Pleurisy?

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 18:49

@Footle I've just googled it and it sounds similar - pain on one side of chest, shoulder and back.

I'll phone 111 soon

Footle · 18/01/2018 19:10

Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon.

brexitschmexit · 18/01/2018 19:18

I had chest pain, was pretty painful but my gut feeling was it was respiratory related rather than heart/blood related. 111 sent me to minor injuries and illness, said to go urgently and get someone else to drive me (I admit I drove myself but I think they said this due to chest pain symptoms, my age and being on the pill - a combination of risk factors). It turned out to be pleurisy which apparently can cause quite unpleasant chest pains. I hope you’re ok, definitely try 111 and get some advice but be prepared to be sent off to A&E or similar due to the nature of your symptoms and family history Flowers

SleepForTheWeek · 18/01/2018 19:30

@brexitschmexit how did they diagnose pleurisy? What was your treatment?

OP posts:
brexitschmexit · 18/01/2018 19:49

She examined me (BP, heart rate, temp etc) and also because I am asthmatic all the symptoms I was describing led to pleurisy. She said there’s not much you can do except try to rest (I have 3 small DCs and am a SAHM so we chuckled at that!) and take ibuprofen as the anti inflammatories help.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 18/01/2018 21:41

Pleurisy is normally diagnosed with a chest xray at the very least

HalfStar · 19/01/2018 09:50

Hi I had exactly this this week and started a thread about it. Have you been unwell at all? I was sent to A&E with the thinking that it was either pleurisy or a PE and PE needed to be ruled out. Because I'd had flu like symptoms and cough etc the eventual verdict was 'a viral thing causing pleuritic pain' Confused Not sure if that helps but the pain has gone now. Hope it goes for you soon.

SleepForTheWeek · 19/01/2018 10:24

Thanks @HalfStar

I've got an appointment for 4pm but actually feeling a lot better and not much pain at all so debating whether to cancel it or not.

I had a terrible cough and cold over Christmas but symptoms gone for a couple of weeks

How did you get on?
