Aussie Flu

Have you had it yet? If so, are the symptoms really that bad or is the media scaremongering us. I've read a few statuses on Facebook from people claiming to have this "Killer" flu but surely if it was that bad they wouldn't be writing about it on Facebook. Hmm I've had a very bad virus for the past 2 weeks that keeps coming back and sore throat so was wondering if that was it??.

I've had flu three times. All 3 times I was bedridden for 2 to 4 weeks. The last episode was the worst as I was unable to breath, was unable to eat anything for 10 days, vomiting repeatedly and was admitted to hospital. I really don't want it again, please keep your germs to yourself.

I've decided to go and get vaccinated. My anxiety is through the roof hearing about all the horror stories and now a few people I know have it, its getting nearer and I'm not taking any chances. I know it takes a couple of week to be completely effective and I know the Aussie Flu isn't covered but a small percentage is and the Japanese Flu is covered so tomorrow morning on my way to work I will get the jab.

Waves to Lem
Day 3
Feel such an idiot I didn't have a flu jab Blush

LondonLassInTheCountry · 20/01/2018 19:37

You have to be in bed with flu = FALSE

You can have flu and not show any symptoms = FACT

CakeInMyFace · 21/01/2018 16:48

I'm on day 10 and still feel wiped out. I had a high temp, migraine type headache, bad body aches, Barking chesty cough, exhaustion and bad tummy pain. I vomited and had diaorreah on the first day too. I was in bed solidly for 3 days but in and out of bed for the last 7. It just doesn't seem to want to go, so awful.

I had a flu vaccine in October too - so much for that! I have never had flu as an adult before and I am 40! I hope I never have it again.

Just been searching to see other people's symptoms to see if this is what I have.

I went home from work with a headache on Monday (I did have a barking cough and my manager said offhand "ooh, everyone's coughing today, I hope I don't get it!" I hope the other girl is ok!). Got home about 4:30, went to sleep, woke up at 6pm when DH and the kids got in and BAM! My face had completely swollen, throat was killing me and I was sweating/shivering in turns.

However, I've done the school run every day since because DH is gone from here at 6am and there is literally no one else. Back in bed at 9:30. And I haven't eaten as much as usual but I have been hungry. And had a fair bit of ice cream as it feels nice sliding down my battered throat!

It's day 4 and I thought I was going to work today. But my face is still swollen, my skin feels shivery and strange, my throat hurts too much and I'm constantly hawking up phlegm, and (disgustingly) using my nose/sniffing rather than coughing to do so because I don't want to injure my throat.

I have had "can't get out of bed" flu before, 2 years ago. This is less incapacitating, but all the symptoms are familiar if slightly milder - the shivering/sweating by turns, aches everywhere, skin sensations, exhaustion. So I'm in the "flu affects people differently, but this is definitely it" camp.

I feel a bit guilty as I could probably do some work today but instead I've emailed to say I'm not coming. I can't talk and I'm not sure I could do a full day and I've been dreading the commute - it's hard enough getting the kids out to childminder or school without the dressing for office, train and 20-min walk added on, so probably safest to leave it. That and tomorrow DD doesn't go to the childminder so I'll need to be on form then!

hello. i'm not wishing to "scaremonger" anyone, but I am still recovering from this flu (it began on 15th January) and it has been the single worst flu turned pneumonia I've ever had in my life. I was lying in bed crying my eyes out because I thought I was going to die - seriously. Violent shakes, difficulty breathing, very disturbed sleep for over a week (could only get about two hours straight sleep), choking on phelgm, wheezing, palpitations, horrific body aches that even co codamol didn't get rid of, unable to get up without feeling faint or getting the shakes, looking
terrible, and just feeling miserable. I didn't get the flu jab because years ago I had a jab and I ended up passing out from it, they said it was a bad reaction, so it's spooked me - however, this flu has spooked me more, so next year I'm getting the jabs. If you have not yet had this flu, and it's still spreading like wild fire, get the jab. You do not want this flu. It is also highly infectious. I've used an immunity spray (coldzyme) for years and I've been lucky until now in not getting anything really bad since I've used it - and I had sworn by this product until I got this flu - immunity sprays are no match for this. If someone around you has this flu, you will probably get it if you haven't had the jab (or the flu). So if you are thinking about getting the jab, please, go and get it. Particularly if you are vulnerable to complications from pre existing health conditions.

I have been feeling wretched since Thursday with pretty much all the symptoms that pps have described. DH has now gone down with it.

One thing I have as well as no appetite is a complete inability to think about food or to plan meals. The prospect of looking at a recipe or online shopping nauseates me. Is this normal? Should I be worried? Should I try to eat?

Witchend · 29/01/2018 17:54

I think two of my dc hav e some version of flu, but different symptoms for each.

Dd1 is struggling through. She's rarely ill, and when she is ill, she struggles on. Last time she was ill she did a weekend of strenuous activities including swimming before collapsing on the school run (still declaring she wanted to go to school). GP took her statistics and said most people wouldn't have been able to stand up right. She's had temperature, sore throat from hell, lost her voice, aching all over, and is very floppy. But she hasn't spent a whole day in bed. although I think she should have

Dd2 is a bit more dramatic and with no intention of ever keeping going if she can help it. She started by vomiting, went onto sore throat and temperature, aching, wheezing and didn't get out of bed for more than 3 hours for nearly a week. She does dying duck well. Wink

Ds is most put out he hasn't managed to be off school and tells them if they give it him in time for half term then he won't forgive them. Grin

Fishcalledlola · 04/02/2018 21:18

You all have my sympathy. I developed a sore throat on Wednesday, 3 hours later I was so cold, 41.1°,shivered all night. On Thursday I rang the nurse, worried about my temp, she sent me to A and E. I spent 4 hours there and was sent off to take paracetamol and plenty fluids.
Yesterday afternoon I felt better, stopped shivering. I woke at 2.30am with a raging temperature and terrible headache, I just didn't know what to do with myself. I'd taken my quota of paracetamol so hit the ibuprofen. Have been so week today, upset tummy, hacking cough and now shivering again.
Dh is back to work tomorrow, I just need to be well.

shggg245 · 04/02/2018 21:32

I'm concerned about my dh. He's had the shivers, cough and a very high temp for 6 days now. It's totally floored him. With ibuprofen / paracetamol combo his temp is reducing to 38.5. For all you sufferers - how long does the fever last?

treedragon · 04/02/2018 21:42

There is another thread on here about a very lengthy and horrid virus that seems to go and returns again - like it goes into remission and then comes back out.

I have had it since 7 January and still feel unwell now I have readched the end of my 4th week and about to enter week 5.

I know one other person who has had it and this was early november and it has taken them 8 weeks to shift it
