Aussie Flu

Have you had it yet? If so, are the symptoms really that bad or is the media scaremongering us. I've read a few statuses on Facebook from people claiming to have this "Killer" flu but surely if it was that bad they wouldn't be writing about it on Facebook. Hmm I've had a very bad virus for the past 2 weeks that keeps coming back and sore throat so was wondering if that was it??.

DH has had something this last 8 days. Symptoms match the Aussie flu and I've never seen him anyway near this sick in 15 yrs. I was so scared I'd get it (38 wks pregnant) or the 4, 3 or 2 yr old would. I felt desperately ill for a few hours around the time DH started showing symptoms but then suddenly got better so I'm thinking my vaccine worked on whatever it was. The two older kids are also vaccinated so hopefully covered but I have worried a lot about the littlest one getting whatever he has.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 08/01/2018 16:54

I really thought I had a really bad cold and was being a wimp but I've just been diagnosed with flu (the GP said I could call it Australian flu if I wanted to sound fancy) and a chest infection.
I've been in bed since Friday morning but feel a bit better in some ways now, it's just this sodding cough. My chest feels like it's burning all the sodding time.

Sympathies to everyone suffering on here Flowers

If you have genuinely had the flu how soon is it safe to return to work/school?
Ds has had it (did post further up) was due back at school today, he was in bed for most of last week but was up and about the house on the weekend (alternating watching tv/playing Lego) but he’s still very tired and isn’t eating very much

Parker231 · 08/01/2018 17:05

My understanding is that if you have had the flu - any type - you would be in bed for 5-10 days, struggle to eat or drink, not able to look after yourself and certainly not DC’s. Someone who has had it told me that if there had been £100 on the other side of the room, they wouldn’t have been able to get it.

Flu is not a cold and cough.

Pinkponiesrock · 08/01/2018 17:10

ursula I think a lot of it is to do with having horse, you just have to manage, no matter how awful you feel or the pain you’re in!

I have had the swine flu, felt awful for 2 weeks, grotty for another 2 weeks and took another 2 weeks to eat and feel normal again (it affected my ears for ages constant popping.

DD was 1 - she had never coslept before but had to as could not do anything else (OH was ill as well though not as bad). My Dad came round and did everything for me. I remember going to the doctors it was a 10 minute walk that took me 45 mins as I felt so terrible (when I spoke to him again to check in he did a phone consultation). And I lost 10 pounds due to not eating at all

selfishcrab · 08/01/2018 19:42

I had something, don't know if it was that or not.
Came on Christmas eve whilst at work, one minute I was ok the next my head hurt, I was sick and had a rel upset tummy, within an hour my voice had gone completely and I was stuck to the loo.
After about a week I got up and went out then within 24 hours had a horrendous ringing/noise in my ears, it was unbearale, luckly that only lasted a day and a half.
Chills and pain all over, spoke to my GP after 7 days of total exhaustion and she said to completely rest,
Stll struggling with it as the tummy pains, bad head, exhaustion etc keep coming back.

ADealingMummy · 08/01/2018 21:23

I am not exactly sure what I had but defo something viral ...
low down sore throat , tight , sore chest , really bad headache, aches all over and the worst chest cough I have ever ever had . I seriously coughed up green all day long for weeks . All over Christmas
My 3 year old and 10 year had a hacking cough for 3 weeks!
I have had the flu jab .
I took my 3 year old for her MMR jab on fri and the nurse had a hacking cough , so did the GP I saw today for something unrelated .

allglitteredout · 08/01/2018 22:09

It’s over three weeks now and my sore throat is fine one day then horrendous the next. Sunday night was the last straw Sad I felt as though I’d swallowed a lump of glass, the pain was unbearable and so today I begged my doctor for antibiotics as I’m sure my throat is infected. She was very reluctant to give me anything but my ears and throat was on fire even though she said she couldn’t see anything. I’ve drank gallons of water, tried every lozenge there is and tried steam inhalers but nothing works and I need a break from feeling like shit 🤧😷🤒 so day 1 on antibiotics 🙏 hoping they work.

Keeping everything crossed for you allglittered, I've started antibiotics too. I asked the doctor if they would have any impact because flu is a virus but he said that the infection would clear up and that would give my body one less thing to fight, really hope you find this is the case for you.
Maybe get some of the throat spray that numbs it? I know the pain only goes for 5 minutes but it's better than nothing. Also gargling with hot salt water, it does help! My right tonsil has become inflamed tonight, maybe in sympathy with your throat.

paranoidpammywhammy2 · 08/01/2018 23:49

I've had it. We are in a hot spot for it. It came on very quickly and my throat was extremely sore. I was coughing a lot, fever, stomach ache, aching all over and it's left me very weak. My throat is taken forever to get better too.

user1471558723 · 09/01/2018 03:47

I've had it too. I am over the worst now I hope after 6 days. I'm still not able to sleep much as when I lie down my chesty cough troubles me. I have never mastered the trick of being able to sleep during the night whilst sitting up. Although for the last few days I have been nodding off during the day when sitting up.
It is a nasty virus. I sympathise with everyone else who is also suffering.

flamingnoravera · 11/01/2018 21:03

I was struck down at 10 last night. A sudden headache, eye ache, muscle ache, cold, hot, exhausted and a dry cough that tastes metallic. I have no cold symptoms. I've been in bed all day, I've had to let down a respite child for this weekend and unable to do my day job. It comes in waves, I get bits of time where I think I'm fine, just a headache, then I stand up and vertigo and brain zaps kick in and I have to get horizontal. I am hungry though, but nothing in the house to eat apart from bread. My partner can't come and look after me because his mother is in an acute ward recovering from an emergency hip replacement and multiple infections and we don't want him passing germs.

Poor me also comes in waves. :(

tonysopranostherapist · 11/01/2018 21:09

I had swine flu when I was pregnant (tested positive) and I still managed to use my laptop and generally get around and look after a toddler Confused

It was definitely flu, I definitely could get out of bed etc. I felt rubbish, but I wasn't unable to get out of bed as others are suggesting would have been the case.

Ylvamoon · 11/01/2018 21:16

I can reassure anyone that thinks they have flu: you will know when you actually have it!!!
(I had it once... And like others that have had flu, I was completely wiped out. Certainly wouldn't have had the energy or will to surf the net jet alone post on something like MN.!)

brownelephant · 11/01/2018 21:21

not necessarily.
I had the swine flu in '09 without symptoms (confirmed by test as dc was ill and I was pregnant)

flamingnoravera · 11/01/2018 21:25

I have no doubt that I have flu. I am currently dosed sky high with drugs which abate the symptoms a bit, enough to post here.

welshmist · 11/01/2018 23:56

Sending hugs for all you flu sufferers, it sounds truly awful.

To those who have had it (or think they have!) how long did it last before you felt relatively normal? I’m on Day 6 now and feel utterly awful still. I don’t know what to do and have two DCs under 5 to look after. I keep thinking I feel marginally better and then feel worse again. Dreading school / nursery pick up as don’t think I can physically make it there as so dizzy

TalkinBoutWhat · 12/01/2018 13:35

A good 7 days at least for the worst of the fever etc. Mine developed into a throat and chest infection. Chest infection still bothering me even after antibiotics, 3 weeks later. Sorry....

allglitteredout · 12/01/2018 14:33

So sorry for all you feeling like you do, sounds pretty awful. I have definitely not had the flu but a nasty virus. I am dreading getting it though, I didn't have the flu vaccination this year because the past two years after having it I have had muscle spasms and was told it could of been a virus interacting with the vaccination Confused. I still took my children (12 & 4) for it and DH has had it too. I've got a bad feeling I'm going to be hit by this and not sure whether to have the bloody vaccine or not FFS!!! Can decide whether its better to have debilitating muscle spasms or the Flu Sad. If I get it I will use all my energy to come on here and let you all know.

Would be interested to know where the virus has spread to, I am in Lancashire and not heard of any cases up to now from friends or in the media.

Get well soon to those who have it Flowers Flowers Flowers
