Scalp psoriasis- does anything help?

I've had this since I was about 7 and it never goes. I use betacap scalp solution but don't think it's helping anymore. Recently my gp have me dovabet scalp gel but it makes my hair very greasy. Normally i wash my hair every 3-4 days. I've tried no shampoo, no sulphate .. no improvement. I now use selsun shampoo but my head still itches a lot - sometimes I wake up in the night scratching.

Does anything help?

My dad swears by T-Gel shampoo. Uses it daily and it works miracles. He's used it for years (probably about 30). Without it he itches like mad.

Has it got tar in? Does tar on the skin cause cancer?

I'll try it anyway. Thanks.

T-gel shampoo
Polytar shampoo
Rosemary shampoo / rinses

Betnovate scalp solution
Exorex (around edges)

All recommended on here!

LineysRunner · 30/12/2017 07:45

No, the tar products for psoriasis don't cause cancer.

Nizoral cleared up my chronic seborrheic dermatitis. Took about 3 weeks of washing my hair every other day. I now use it around twice a month for maintenance (plus I find it does a good 'deep clean' of my hair) I appreciate it's not quite the same condition but I have read that psoriasis and dermatitis are often misdiagnosed with each other.

Ask for a scalp mousse. I use Carelux but Betnovate also do one. My GP kept prescribing gels for my scalp which was a nightmare but went to a dermatologist in the end which has been life changing. GP had also given bad advice about using a nit comb to scrape the lumps of my scalp which left is really sore and bleeding. I used the mousse intensively in combination with light therapy and in a couple of months it had cleared up and so far has not come back except in a couple of patches which are easy to keep under control.

The scratching is also really habitual. Because I have had a long period of remission even when I have a patch I don't scratch like I used to.

There are also some good online support networks where people share their alternative treatments if you don't want to go down the steroid route.

I found losing weight and getting pregnant did it no end of good :)
I rotate between t gel shampoo, nizoral shampoo and dovonex which I leave in overnight then wash out. I tend to find something works for a while then it loses its effectiveness. Mines really bad at the moment.

rosesandcashmere · 30/12/2017 07:49

Lush Superbalm can work very well for some types (I had tried every prescription)

Balloondog · 30/12/2017 08:08

I spent years using t-gel/tar shampoo/lush products which just barely kept mine under control and it would always flare up again when I stopped using them. I've been using Moogoo shampoo for 18 months now after seeing it recommended by someone on here and it's been life changing. After a month or so of using it daily initially, I now use it once a week or so (I've gone as long as a month between uses) and haven't had a flare up at all since. I'd highly recommend giving it a go...

Fadingmemory · 30/12/2017 08:11

T Gel works for me

TheWelshDragon · 30/12/2017 08:11

Situp how long have you been clear?

I've had psoriasis for over 30 years inc scalp p. My psoriasis reacts badly to anything with coal tar in it so I used to manage it with betnovate scalp application or nizoral but they weren't suitable for long term use.

My scalp was so bad last year after I had to discontinued them that I had my hair constantly pinned back to hide the flakes.

Someone on a psoriasis forum recommended the Body Shop Ginger Shampoo. It cleared it completely in just over a month. I get the odd small patch back now and again but nowhere near as bad as it was.

TheWelshDragon · 03/01/2018 18:17

I've been using Body Shop ginger shampoo but it makes no difference to mine. I've bought T Gel shampoo, will try it tonight. I've also got Dovobet gel, it's messy but I've been rubbing just a little into my scalp in places and it seems to be helping a bit.

I suffer with this same problem and nothing helped except seaweed baths with head in the water for 20-3mins. You can buy it online. Will try find the link

RandomMess · 03/01/2018 18:24

It's just trial and error I'm afraid Sad

Nannplum666 · 03/01/2018 18:26

I had it and Head and shoulders itchy scalp sorts it out quickly !

Snowman41 · 03/01/2018 18:27

I cut bread from my diet and found my psoriasis improved massively. Some of it has gone altogether and my scalp is nowhere near as bad as it used to be. I wash it with treseme because all the other options made no difference and left my hair lank

BikeRunSki · 03/01/2018 18:27

Swimming in the sea really helps.
I appreciate that this is not useful in the UK in January!

ChristmasCakes · 03/01/2018 19:22

I got a stronger scalp solution-can't remember the name but will look when I've settled the baby. And vitamin D cream from the GP which cleared up the patches on my elbows within a couple of days!

Oraiste · 03/01/2018 20:52

I gave up sugar and went low carb and it worked. I've fallen off the wagon a bit but it seems staying away apart from a few outbreaks. I was a chronic sufferer before.

Bluesheep8 · 04/01/2018 07:56

Hi I use the aloe shampoo and conditioner from forever living and have for years now. When I get flare ups elsewhere, it never affects my scalp now.

oreosoreosoreos · 04/01/2018 08:08

I’d second moo goo shampoo and conditioner - and the scalp cream for when it’s really bad. Amazing stuff! It’s worth talking to their customer services dept, as I think they might be able to send you out samples.

Popular is the only shampoo that work for me
