Scalp psoriasis- does anything help?

I've had this since I was about 7 and it never goes. I use betacap scalp solution but don't think it's helping anymore. Recently my gp have me dovabet scalp gel but it makes my hair very greasy. Normally i wash my hair every 3-4 days. I've tried no shampoo, no sulphate .. no improvement. I now use selsun shampoo but my head still itches a lot - sometimes I wake up in the night scratching.

Does anything help?

L'oreal mens shampoo with the orange cap has transformed ds, after years of using prescription shampoos. In desperation I posted on here a couple of years ago and this was recommended to us. Within a week it was SO much better, and is still clear now.

I tried the loreal one and it didn't work for me :(

Namethecat · 04/01/2018 08:21

I tried Faith in nature tea tree oil shampoo. Seems to be doing the job. I'm also forcing myself to only wash my hair twice a week on advice of dermatologist.

This is clearly a minefield. My dd2 has very bad flaking, not properly diagnosed with psoriasis yet. The stress of moving up to secondary had made it flare massivley. We have some prescription cream, which helps for about a day. Thanks for the shampoo ideas, I'll try some of them.

She's still under the age for medicated shampoos for normal use.

I had light therapy for guttate psoriasis, I could tell how bad it was when the dermatologists eyes lit up when she saw me! Hideous, and makes you feel so low Flowers

I've tried all sorts and they become less effective over time. Last time I had it I used coconut oil on my scalp in the bath so I lay in a lovely hot bath for an hour or so and it really helped - really though for me it's sunshine that works very well so this summer I had a week in the sun then a mile th later another two weeks and it did the world of good - it's back now of course Sad

I think a combination is always the best for it and mixing it up so the hair and scalp doesn't get to used to certain chemicals/solutions. T-gel coal is excellent but only use it twice a week. Lush Superbalm once a week left in over night and washed out in the morning. And then something medicated once a week should honestly really help combined with these. Karecare anti dandruff (blue bottle) is absolutely a must once every few weeks too. The body shop stuff is not good (made my partner's worse) and not even completely ethical any more since it was sold off.

Good luck Smile these combined after years of trial and error work so well for my partner.

I use dovobet which works really well - but I do wash my hair every day. However I find that once it's sorted it out, I only need to use it every 2 to 3 days (then I forget, or I have my period which makes it worse, and the cycle starts again).

MayFayner · 04/01/2018 08:55

pottery is the Karecare in the blue bottle a conditioner or a shampoo? I can see a conditioner that you leave in for 20 mins- is that it?

My saviour used to be Kiehl's anti-dandruff but they discontinued the one I used (of course Angry ) so now float between Nizoral and the L'Oréal men's one.

Definitely going to try the MooGoo, thanks PP.

whoareyoukidding · 04/01/2018 08:56

I found that a rinse of apple cider vinegar after shampooing really helped stop the itching, too.

Scabbersley · 04/01/2018 08:58

I rubbed hydrocortisone cream into the worst part of my scalp and changed to sebamed shampoo. It's never come back.

LonelyOversharer · 04/01/2018 12:28

Now, my dd2's scalp scales up very thickly then cracks a bit and is sore (only in a few bits, though she scales all over). What do I do when it is sore? We tend to wait to wash again until it's healed up a bit.

Any advice is gratefully received...she is 11.5. Do I keep going to see the 'skin guy' gp, or try some other shampoos as well do you think? She had terrible cradle cap, which never went away I suppose. Born with a full head of inch long hair, so it's always sort of hidden in there.

Dox · 04/01/2018 15:51

Some good tips on here which I will follow.
That MooGoo is very expensive!
GP told me not to wash my hair every day. I had had very short hair all my life and have grown it. It's better but still flares up every couple of months.
Sometimes I rub olive oil into my scalp and sleep on it - messy but soothing.
Definitely vary the shampoos. Use no other hair products ever.

TheWelshDragon · 04/01/2018 17:17

I've tried low carb, no sugar, no gluten, no dairy... doesn't make a difference to mine. The only time it went away was when I was pregnant.

@MayFayner yes the keracare conditioner is AMAZING Grin honestly you'll love it and it really helps with scalp problems and dandruff. It says 20 minutes but even 5 minutes really helps for some quick relief, it literally stops you itching immediately and feels amazing (all tingly)

MayFayner · 04/01/2018 22:17

Oh that sounds exactly what I need @potteryprincess30, thank you!
