Is Laser Eye really the best thing you ever did?

I have been wearing contacts for over 15 years and never had any problems-however these last few months I am finding the lense very uncomfortable in my left eye only!
I have been back and forth-trying different lenses and having my eyes checked-The Optician couldn't see any problems and now have basically said they can't offer any more lenses to try and I feel like they have washed their hands of me.
I am still in discomfort on and off with my eye
I HATE wearing my glasses.
Anyway because of this and the fact I do have the money I am seriously considering Laser Eye Surgery.
I am a little concerned-I have read the horror stories!
I watched a short video also and the procedure however quick looks barbaric.
So! Please reassure me it really is the best thing you ever did!
Thanks

Yep the best ever £2000 I have ever spent. Had it done 15 years ago and never had any problems.

charliebear78 · 09/12/2017 18:11

Oh yes! I had it as a wedding present. It's a,sang. I'm s glad I did, it's ,ace such a difference.
Six weeks of dry eyes after, and occasional issues with driving in the dark. Otherwise absolutely perfect.

Racmactac · 09/12/2017 18:18

Had mine done 9 years ago after I had lots of problems with contact lenses and my eyes being so dry.

It was painful and I went into shock when they did it however I woke up the next morning with 20-20 vision and I've never regretted it.

Sadly my eyes are starting to deteriorate albeit very slowly because of old age.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 09/12/2017 18:21

Yep, it’s amazing. I had it done about 10 years ago.

I have to wear reading glasses now I’m getting older but distance is still spot on.

TheweewitchRoz · 09/12/2017 18:30

I spent £2000 15 years ago & was totally worth it.

whiskers72 · 09/12/2017 18:30

I had mine done about 6 years ago, very painful at the time but defiantly worth it. I also didn't cry at chopping onions for about 3 years. Eyes were very sensitive to bright sunlight for a couple of years so sun glasses essential.

underneaththeash · 09/12/2017 20:13

OP what prescription are you?

refractive surgery can be amazing (I'm an optometrist and was involved in post/pre-op checks for years). I wouldn't hesitate having the surgery if I was short-sighted. Most of the horror stories are from years ago, as long as you have surgery in this country and have an intralase surgery (so no cut) your complication rate is very low.

Does your left eye feel okay without the contact lens? I'd be very worried that something is actually wrong with your eye that's making the contact lens uncomfortable, as optometrists our profession is very well trained, but we're not experts in everything. However, if you hate wearing your glasses, have you been actually taking your lenses out when advised? You do not want to be having surgery on an unhappy eye.

Blahblahblahzeeblah · 09/12/2017 20:14

Now it's done it's fantastic. I hated the procedure though, was swearing my head off at the doctor and I rarely swear.

MayFayner · 09/12/2017 20:17

Not my own experience but my sister had it done and still needs glasses. She was -6 or 7 ish, now she is -1 or -1.5.

Personally I am too chicken to get it done and would be miffed if I did it and still needed specs. (I'm -6.5)

Allthebestnamesareused · 09/12/2017 20:20

Yes - I was -6.75 and -7.5 and had it done 16 years ago when it was not as common.

I did lots of research and went to the place that had the best record for my high prescription and also turned away the most people as unsuitable for the procedure.

It was the best money I ever spent and if I woke tomorrow and it was back to what it was before I'd do it all over again.

Starhaf · 09/12/2017 20:20

Best thing ever! 12 years down the line & no problems at all. I would do it again in a heartbeat

RegretingTheElf · 09/12/2017 20:22

I was positive +3 +4 best thing I ever did

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 09/12/2017 20:23

I can't get it done - my prescription is -10 or something. I would get it done if I could and take the risk even though my sister who got it done looked sooo much better with specs!! In fact, I think that about everyone I have heard had it done!!🤣

Jealous?? You bet!!

CauliflowerSqueeze · 09/12/2017 20:23

Yes!!!!! Every single day I appreciate it.

shhhfastasleep · 09/12/2017 20:24

I'm -10 ish. I understand laser surgery wouldn't make my shortsightedness go away completely- I'd still need specs.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 09/12/2017 20:24

Lastgirl I was -9 and had it done

CauliflowerSqueeze · 09/12/2017 20:24

I have 20:20 vision now.

MirandaWest · 09/12/2017 20:27

My prescription is about -11.5 in both eyes. Would love to be able to see when I wake up but would hate anything to go wrong and I am lucky that with contact lenses or glasses I can see fine and would hate to ruin that.

Yogagirl123 · 09/12/2017 20:39

It’s amazing, I had lasik 9years ago, worth every penny, my only regret is not having it done sooner.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 09/12/2017 20:41

Squeeze who did you go to?? Wow!! My optician told me I would have to have LASIK or something and even then it wouldn't be perfect!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 09/12/2017 20:42

My prescription was -13 when I was told that mind you, so my eyes have improved since then!!

christmashope · 09/12/2017 20:47

I spent just over £2000 15 years ago
Best thing I ever did

charliebear78 · 09/12/2017 20:51

Hi all,
I am worried about it hurting but it is what it is I suppose.
Do I go off what my prescription is for my glasses?
I am worried there is some underlying problem with my eye-however I have had it checked and do not really know where to go from here-Docs is probably not an option?
The discomfort is not there all the time so I just dunno!!!
Sometimes I can go for days/week without.
However there is definitely something wrong with either my eye or the lenses but I have tried so many pairs now and have the problem with them all eventually.

My only regret was not doing it sooner. I never realised until I had the surgery how much I was missing. I had a clarity in my vision post surgery that I had never achieved with glasses or contacts. Everything felt crisp and looked crystal clear. It was so weird. However I had a complication and needed a second operation to correct one eye. I was unrealistic about recovery and with hindsight would have one done at a time so that if there were an issue I would still have one working eye guaranteed!
