Pins and needles in my hand for months now, and losing grip of things, what can it be?

I had a blood test done last week that the nurse called an MOT, basically it was testing everything from kidney and liver function to colesteral, I have been called to go to the doctors because they have found something, so now I am wondering what the hell could be going on. Any ideas?

No ideas really but just wanted to wish you good luck. Hope your doctors better than mine.

Carmenere · 19/04/2007 10:06

I would advise against googling anything until you have been to the docs, so many people are terrifying them selves with doom laden self diagnoses from the internet I too wish you luck.

mumto3girls · 19/04/2007 10:06

I thought it sounded like carpal tunnel syndrome - but don't think that has any connection with the tests you mentioned...sorry.

nearlythere · 19/04/2007 10:07

sounds like it could be carpel tunnel syndrome? Not sure but that seeems to fit with symptoms!

check with doc and mention it- if he agrees he will send you for a scan and it can be sorted out with a quick op under local anasthetic!

littlemissbossy · 19/04/2007 10:08

sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome, although I'm no doctor - google that - it' basically swelling of the tendons in the wrists

NatalieJane · 19/04/2007 10:09

No I am not googling it, have made that mistake before!!

I thought you only got CTS when you were pregnant?

OP posts:
fryalot · 19/04/2007 10:10

I thought carpal tunnel syndrome as well - don't think you have to pg to get it, though I believe it is more common when pg.

NatalieJane · 19/04/2007 10:14

Ah so fingers crossed that is all it is then Why is it no matter how much you tell yourself to stop being stupid and it is just something like low iron or something else you end up thinking the worst anyway?

Would CTS show up from a blood test then?

OP posts:
Marina · 19/04/2007 10:14

Anyone can get CTS, you don't have to be PG.
When is your GP appointment NatalieJane? Soon, I hope "Found something" is not a reassuring way of communicating with a patient. Best of luck from me too.

AnnabelCaramel · 19/04/2007 10:15

I used to get bad pins and needles when I was anaemic, and that would show up in a blood test.

NatalieJane · 19/04/2007 10:22

When I rang for the results this morning, the receptionist said she was just about to ring me to get me to go today to see the doctor about they had found from the results, I can't get there today so she booked me an appointment for tomorrow morning, normally you have to fight with her to get her to book an appointment for the next day but she, for the first time ever, made it for me with no begging and pleading, which also had made me worry a bit!!

The pins and needles itself isn't too bad, it is constantly there but it isn't as though I am aware of it all the time, but last week I started losing my grip on things, now I can't open packets of things or like unscrew the juice lid, and it was really only because of not being able to grip things that I finally went! I felt a bit of a timewaster TBH, going to a doctor because of pins and needles!! LOL

Do you have any other symptoms?I think it sounds like carpal tunnel too although I wasn't sure that it could be diagnosed by a blood test

NatalieJane · 19/04/2007 10:29

The only other thing is my hair falling out, but I had a baby in December, it fell out after I had DS1, but this time there is tonnes of it coming out, I have two proper bald patches now, so it is a lot worse than what I lost with DS1. Obviously though, I am pretty certain it is just down to the baby.

I bet it's anaemia NJ, try not to worry and good luck. Will you tell us how you got on?

noddyholder · 19/04/2007 10:34

Anaemia does cause tingling and hair loss

AnnabelCaramel · 19/04/2007 10:36

Ring the surgery and ask if they can tell you any more, or at least give you your blood count. Might put your mind at rest a bit.

NatalieJane · 19/04/2007 10:39

The receptionist won't give me any details about any of it, she is a bit of a cowbag at the best of times.

I'm not too worried now, it doesn't seem anything serious so I am peachy now

Thaks everyone, and I will let you know when I get the results

I've got pins and needles and numbness in one hand and have a trapped ulnar nerve, so similar to CTS, but a different nerve.

Clary · 19/04/2007 10:57

I never knew that about anaemia and CTS.

I had CTS when pg and still have it on and off (I drop things too - DH despairs of me).

I am also anaemic (ongoing) so there could be a link.Hmmmm

NJ hope you get a good result from docs.

NatalieJane · 20/04/2007 14:11

Just got back from docs, bloods are all fine why the receptionist couldn't have told me that, I've no idea. The doctor says basically he is stumped, no idea what it could be, and has referred me to a neurologist(sp?) although he says the neurologist will probably say the same as him.

Don't know if I am more relieved or more worried, I am glad there is nothing serious wrong obviously, but at the same time if they don't know what it is, then how do they know it isn't serious, or when it will get better, is it going to get worse, etc.

Aparently not.

OP posts:
StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 20/04/2007 16:43

How does he know its not carpal tunnel? Even if he thinks its not from where abouts your pins and needles are only a nerve conduction study can tell for sure if you have a trapped nerve.

Hopefully the neurologist will sort that out for you.

NatalieJane · 20/04/2007 17:08

I don't know, all he asked was if I had any pain in my elbow/neck/shoulders, if my fingers ever went completely numb, if the pins and needles are there constantly or if they come and go, and if I can remember injuring/banging it at any point.
