coughing is a sign. yes, but its hard to articulate. - its not yer avg cough, its a tickle with a wheeze with a please help me stop coughing i cant breathe vibe.

ok that was no use.

At night and after exercise (and not any other time) is a classic sign of asthma, Pfnm - have you been to GP?

misdee · 11/04/2007 22:25

take her to GP. dd1 coughs at night bits an awful cough that wont stop untill she uses her inhalers. she is asthmatic. dd2 has had a cough since xmas thats not going but isnt the same gasping for air cough that dd1 presents with.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/04/2007 22:26

Yep, that sounds like it could be. Go to GP to get her checked over.

Beauregard · 11/04/2007 22:26

That's fine thanks custy
I don't think she cough's like that.

really?

Sounds like it could well be. Take her to the docs for a peak flow test etc.

brimfull · 11/04/2007 22:28

Classic sign, she's trying to breathe out effectively and asthma makes that difficult hence the cough.

Beauregard · 11/04/2007 22:29

No i haven't taken her to the gp,have only just noticed it has a pattern iykwim?
I am trying to remember if she had a slight cough prior to getting chicken pox,but that was nearly 8 weeks ago.
There is also family history of astma(?)and she already has excema and hayfever.

I have very mild asthma and only need to use an inhaler during and after a cold. The symptoms are MUCH worse at night and even though mine is mild it's just as custy described it. Take her to the GP. It might just be that her chest is still recovering from an infection and she's struggling when she's breathing deeply, but 7 weeks is a long time and if she's prescribed an inhaler it will really help.

zephyrcat · 11/04/2007 22:30

I get the coughing at night and after running etc mostly around the same time as my hayfever kicks in. I used to get eczema too - it's all related.

Do you have cats?

Beauregard · 11/04/2007 22:31

we don't have cats no.

DD2 had eczema from an early age and asthma kicked in like this when she was about 3.

She had various inhalers at various stages, all of which helped a bit, but she started playing flute at 7-8 and that made the biggest difference because it developed her lung capacity. She's 22 now and hasn't needed inhalers for years.

warthog · 11/04/2007 22:44

i've found that my asthma was worse at night when i lay down and went to sleep. i also have acid reflux. my db is a gastroenterologist and said that my reflux causes my asthma, hence getting it when i lie down at night.

i treat my reflux and low and behold, my asthma has gone.

misdee · 11/04/2007 22:48

ooo i berst get dd2 to a GP as well then

warthog · 12/04/2007 08:05

good plan. i warn you though, a lot of gp's don't know about the link between asthma and reflux but it makes sense if you think about it: stuff comes up out of your stomach into oesophagus and can get into lungs to trigger an allergic reaction.

misdee · 12/04/2007 12:37

dd2 has asthma.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/04/2007 13:45

She's pushing the competitive sibling thing too far, isnt she?

I'm sure she'll be fine with some regular inhalers

misdee · 12/04/2007 14:07

yes she wants to do everything big sis does lol.

they both have heart murmurs, both has asthma now, and both have eczema. dd1 has the added bonus of a leaking valve (dont you dare dd2, dont you dare)

misdee · 12/04/2007 19:58

bump for PFNM

Beauregard · 12/04/2007 20:18

Oh misdee
Good job that you took her ey?
What did the GP give her?

my dd1 hasn't coughed since even though she was running around a lot today ,typical huh?
I will mention it to the GP though when i get chance and keep an eye on her and maybe if she starts again i will keep a log of when she does it.

misdee · 12/04/2007 20:22
