Hi, haven't been on here for a couple of years and have had to make a new account as forgot password so please go easy lol 😐

Anyway, my partner went into hospital this morning for a relatively minor op (knee surgery, day case) his first time having a general anaesthetic. Hes 31. Was only out for about 2 hours and soent 3 hours in the recovery before they discharged him. He seemsped okay when I collected him, a little groggy maybe but he was chatting away and seemed ok. He even ate tea with us at about 4ish and had a phone call to his brother which he was talking away fine and no oroblems there.
Now its 9.30 and for the last 2 or 3 hours he is starting to concern me. Has become extremely drowsy, to the point where he cant hold his head up. I suggested he went up to bed and went up to check on him 20 minutes later and I literally had to grab him and shake him violently just to get a response. He is not responding to touch alone, I am having to slap him or poke him numerous times.

Is this normal? Other than paracetamol and naproxen he has no other painkillers so this isnt down to any other drugs. Could he be having a delayed reaction? Thinking if this continues to maybe call 111 but then again I have never had surgery and so am not sure if this is normal or not?

I hope he's ok.

MrsSkeletor · 13/10/2017 06:42

Ambulance. My father nearly died several hours after 'coming round' from a general

MrsSkeletor · 13/10/2017 06:43

Glad he's back to hospital - hope for an excellent recovery xxx

Well done for calling the ambulance OP. Hopefully, your DH is recovering now.

Naproxen side effects

When you have time, I suggest you ring 111 again and advise them that you wish to make a formal complaint.

The very first questions asked are about breathing and consciousness. If you told them what you told us here about his conscious state then I cannot fathom why you were told to wait for a callback.

Something went wrong and needs to be investigated to avoid anyone else being given similar advice in these circumstances.

Flowers for you and your DH

somewhereovertherain · 13/10/2017 19:47

Hope he’s okay.

I am shocked by the response from 111 - they usually err on the side of caution and they have seriously buggered up here.

I do hope your OH is getting the help he needs and will be well soon. Well done for taking the right action.

Hope he is doing ok?

JohnHunter · 13/10/2017 21:08

Oh for goodness sake. 111 stack A&E up with nonsense and then tell "unresponsive after surgery" to wait an hour for a call back. Would you please write and ask them to review this call? I think this should be done even if he is discharged without any cause found for his symptoms.

DesignedForLife · 13/10/2017 21:43

Agree with above poster, please ask for this call to 111 to be reviewed, that's really bad!

How is he today?

Jabba89 · 13/10/2017 21:46

Hi everybody, thank you so much for all your lovely messages, my partner is back at home now, the pain in his knee is just starting to Kick in but he is so much better in himself. He was kept in until 3 this afternoon, in the ambulance his breathing slowed drastically and he needed a tube and oxygen to get him going again, i was terrified when i got there. he was kept in for over 12 hours for observation but has been back to himself since breakfast! Docs believe it may have been a reaction to his pain meds and they said although very rare some people can have a delayed reaction to anaesthetics sometimes hours after they have 'woken up'. Anyway, the nurse who discharged him was lovely, she said it is a sign of the times, when she first started nursing over 30 years ago any op no matter how minor or routine, well under a general was an overnight admission for this very reason. As very occasionally someone will present with an adverse reaction for whatever reason. We now know for next time if he ever needs another op. He also said he doesnt even remember taking his naproxen so of course I feel really awful as I should have helped him, but he really was in my opinion fine. I will look at calling 111 and making a complaint, the guy on the phone said it was normal to be like this after a general so maybe they didnt get how urgent it was (im not very firm with people, maybe i need to toughen up a bit 😂)
Thank you again everybody, meant so much to me ☺

Glad he's on the mend Flowers

MollyHuaCha · 13/10/2017 21:59

Great to hear he’s getting better.

MrsEricBana · 13/10/2017 22:01

Oh I'm really pleased he's on the mend. Well done for looking after him so well.

Rainallday · 13/10/2017 22:04

Glad he's ok now. I think complaining to 111 is a good call as they will look for the learning opportunities in what happened and it might help improve things there for the future if someone else phones with something similar.

DancingLedge · 13/10/2017 22:18

Whew.
Hope the knee doesn't hurt for too long.

Mishappening · 13/10/2017 22:19

So pleased to hear he is well. The nurse is of course right - the pressure to stick to targets and churn folk through at speed like widgets in a factory leads to just this sort of problem and to elderly people being discharged whilst still in need of care and to unsuitable home conditions.

On "Ambulance" the other night, one of the paramedics said that they are always being called to readmit people who have been discharged too soon.

I worked most of my life in the NHS and the care that used to be offered erred on the safe side and used common sense.

PurplePillowCase · 13/10/2017 22:30

but then again, most people recover well at home and are at less risk from superbug infections.
