Hi, haven't been on here for a couple of years and have had to make a new account as forgot password so please go easy lol 😐

Anyway, my partner went into hospital this morning for a relatively minor op (knee surgery, day case) his first time having a general anaesthetic. Hes 31. Was only out for about 2 hours and soent 3 hours in the recovery before they discharged him. He seemsped okay when I collected him, a little groggy maybe but he was chatting away and seemed ok. He even ate tea with us at about 4ish and had a phone call to his brother which he was talking away fine and no oroblems there.
Now its 9.30 and for the last 2 or 3 hours he is starting to concern me. Has become extremely drowsy, to the point where he cant hold his head up. I suggested he went up to bed and went up to check on him 20 minutes later and I literally had to grab him and shake him violently just to get a response. He is not responding to touch alone, I am having to slap him or poke him numerous times.

Is this normal? Other than paracetamol and naproxen he has no other painkillers so this isnt down to any other drugs. Could he be having a delayed reaction? Thinking if this continues to maybe call 111 but then again I have never had surgery and so am not sure if this is normal or not?

Call a bloody ambulance!

LEMtheoriginal · 12/10/2017 22:28

Just ring 999 please don't worry if it's appropriate - the paramedic can do that. Yes you'd be sleepy post OP but unresponsive and shallow weak pulse is serious.

Abetes · 12/10/2017 22:28

Call 999.

Helga55 · 12/10/2017 22:29

999 now!

Seti · 12/10/2017 22:31

Honestly he needs an ambulance immediately x

Giraffey1 · 12/10/2017 22:32

Hope your H is ok, OP.

BelleandBeast · 12/10/2017 22:41

I hate the call you back in an hour shit, he sounds like he's going unconscious, what are they playing at?

Ermm · 12/10/2017 22:44

Bloody hell call an ambulance. Now.

caoraich · 12/10/2017 22:46

I'm a doctor, though not surgical. I would ring 999
I have also asked my surgeon DP. He says if one of his patient's relatives rang the ward after surgery and said what you've typed, he'd tell them to ring 999 too. Please phone 999.

Insomnibrat · 12/10/2017 22:47

WTF was 111 thinking suggesting she wait an hour with those symptoms before a 'call back'? Really!?!

MammaTJ · 12/10/2017 22:50

Phone the number you were given on discharge, they will phone an ambulance.

Schmoochypoos · 12/10/2017 22:52

Please phone 999 if you haven't already OP

debbs77 · 12/10/2017 22:52

Goodness me you must be petrified.

CredulousThickos · 12/10/2017 22:53

I hope he’s ok. This is definitely 999 territory.

buckeejit · 12/10/2017 22:54

Yes to ambulance & hope all's ok d

Jabba89 · 12/10/2017 22:56

Hi everyone, just to update, I did phone 999 and explained how unresponsive he was, they sent an ambulance on blue lights and they have taken him back in. Just waiting for his sister in law to get here so I can leave and go uo to be with him. Paramedics not too sure whats going on. he is definately way to drowsy, they said his breathing is a concern as it is very shallow and he has slightly low blood pressure and pulse little bit on the low side too (55) They did ask me to collect all his medications up and we noticed that he has used 4 more naproxen tablets than he has meant to have used, so they said it could be an unintentional overdose which is now having an adverse effect on the residual anaesthetic gases although Im not sure how its happened. I thought he was fine but he must have been really confused to have taken his meds all wrong.
Guilt setting in 😢
Thank you all so much for your advice I will try and get back on here as soon as possible to let you know how he is, he is in good health other than this knee so hoping this will not be too serious.

I’d ring 999. If he is that hard to wake and seems that out of it and has a weak pulse then he needs urgent treatment.

Fairylea · 12/10/2017 22:57

Sorry, cross posted with you op. Hope he gets better quickly. Flowers

Backingvocals · 12/10/2017 22:58

Gosh. How scary. Hopefully it's the drugs making him extra drowsy. But well done calling 999. Sometimes 111 wont cut it. Hoping he starts to improve.

tocas · 12/10/2017 22:59

Don't feel guilty op you've done the right thing and he is in safe hands now Flowers

georgedawes · 12/10/2017 22:59

So glad you called 999! Hope he is ok and recovers quickly.

He is now getting the care he needs.

DancingLedge · 12/10/2017 23:01

Thanks for update. All best wishes, will be thinking of you all.

PricklyBall · 12/10/2017 23:01

Thank goodness he's safely back in hospital, jabba. Do not feel guilty - these things happen (and messing up on keeping count of meds is easy enough at the best of times). Hope he feels better soon. Flowers
