People who never get colds?

Please advise what you do to never get colds? I’m willing to try anything. I take multivitamins every day but that appears to do nothing to help!

A combination of being around grotty kids and being sensible about hygiene seems to work for me. I very rarely get ill, but I don't have an especially healthy lifestyle or diet. Getting the flu jab on doctor's orders is the limit of my illness prevention programme.

BelleandBeast · 09/10/2017 09:32

I work with young children and haven't had a cold in three years..... as soon as I feel anything, like a twinge in the back of my throat I take echinacea. If my own family are sick, I take it too. I also take lots of vitamin C too. I don't get enough sleep and I exercise regularly.

Of course, having written this down, I bet I'll get a cold.....!

LittleCandle · 09/10/2017 09:44

I rarely get colds, but when I do, they can be pretty bad. I don't do or not do anything. I work with the public, so am exposed to everything. I don't take multi-vitamins or anything like that. I don't use anti-bac anything and certainly not the hand sanitiser stuff as it makes me itch dreadfully. I just happen to have a great immune system.

I do eat a lot of garlic and a reasonable amount of chilli sauce, but my diet is not amazing (I like it though) and I don't do huge amounts of exercise, either. I think its just the luck of the draw.

mineallmine · 09/10/2017 09:47

I very occasionally have a runny nose but that's as close to a cold as i ever got. I think it's just an immune system that's inheirited, I'm afraid. My mother was the same.

Like a PP, I'm also a primary school teacher so exposed to snotty noses all the time so maybe that's helped go make my system more robust?

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/10/2017 09:57

I never used to get colds but I have a humdinger of one at the moment and last winter it was one after another. I exercise, eat healthily, don't smoke or drink alcohol, am not overweight and retired so why? I haven't been in contact with anyone with a cold or in a crowd for weeks.
I was going to get a flu jab too.
I feel like I have a head full of concrete 😷
I'd love to know how to avoid them!

Dalesgirl16 · 09/10/2017 09:58

I am ver clean and wash my hands a lot and thought maybe I don’t have resistance to germs. I will try all these and will definitely start dosing up on garlic and get some echinacea !

My children are grown up now, but by God, when they were little I had a cold every bloody week and every Christmas ruined by it, no taste and feeling dreadful! I must have built immunity up as I have only had 2 colds in the past 10 years, touch wood!

I also wash hands constantly especially after coming home and never touch my eyes, nose or mouth when outside.

oooooohhhlalaaa · 09/10/2017 10:50

We have had very few colds since we made a point of increasing frequency of washing hands with warm soapy water.

whyowhyiwhy · 09/10/2017 11:05

Take good probiotics all year round and wash hands throughout day. Also make sure you have enough rest & downtime (easier said than done I know!) Stress really affects immune system and 90% of immune system is in the gut (fairly sure that's the percentage anyway!)

I get ill if I do too much and overdo it. First thing to go is usually my back which is a warning sign that I'm getting stressed out.

whyowhyiwhy · 09/10/2017 11:07

Also I have lots of animals so maybe that builds up immunity via germs? Probiotics I use are bio kult (Amazon)

PrincessoftheSea · 09/10/2017 11:11

I think I am blessed with a good immune system so partly down to luck. I do eat healthily, excersise and make sure I sleep enough. I think sleep is probably the most important thing.

EdithWeston · 09/10/2017 11:16

I think it's luck, being well nourished (have a multivitamin if you think your diet could do with a bit if improvement), washing your hands frequently. And probably having had s lot of colds in the past, so their immune system 'recognises' those and near matches and zaps them effectively. Doctors and teachers get everything in their first years in the role, but very rarely once they've been around for a while.

PrincessoftheSea · 09/10/2017 11:31

Oh yes forgot to say obsessively washing my hands. I ise tissue to open the door to the toilets at work and I am just generally hysterical about touching anything which I am sure prevents colds too.

notacooldad · 09/10/2017 11:37

I rarely get colds. I don't do anything special though.
My diet isn't great. I do have a good standard of hygiene but I assume most people do anyway.
Just one of those things I guess.

whatisgoingon1 · 09/10/2017 11:39

I rarely get colds and I strengthen my immunity by eating a clove or 2 of fresh garlic with my dinner. In winter times nearly every day.It works wonders!

FinallyHere · 09/10/2017 11:40

Not wishing to derail the thread, but does anyone else find themselves in despair at the idea that the answer to a poor diet is to take a multivitamin tablet?

Fresh vegetables, lightly cooked if raw is too much for you at first, are the way forward.

FinallyHere · 09/10/2017 11:41

Oohh, whatisgoingon glad to hear from someone else who knows about the power of raw garlic.

PollyPerky · 09/10/2017 11:42

I second hand washing especially after using shopping trolleys, touching handrails on stairs and escalators, and using any keypads for credit card payments/ ATMs. These are evidently dirtier than a loo seat.

RatherBeRiding · 09/10/2017 11:45

I rarely get colds and my hand-washing is, ummm, extremely slapdash to put it mildly! Grin

I get a lot of outdoor exercise, try to get enough sleep, eat reasonably healthily. And I do regularly come into contact with people who have stinking colds.

Luck? Good immune system? No idea! Which isn't terribly helpful.

nancy75 · 09/10/2017 11:53

I have not had a cold for 2 winters since I started taking fairly high dose of vitaminD. I do have a very good diet but am but D deficient even in summer, some people just can’t process but D even with a healthy diet

Marmaladetea · 09/10/2017 13:39

I've heard cool mist humidifiers are helpful - if anyone knows of a decent one please let me know!

DerelictWreck · 09/10/2017 13:55

I'd say the complete opposite to PPs Blush

I never specifically wash my hands before eating, I touch all the handrails and public spaces I want, don't even own antibac gel, and I get a cold maybe every other year?

I know nothing works for everyone, but i think sometimes people restrict their interaction with bacteria and germs so much that when some get through it makes them ill!

MiddlingMum · 09/10/2017 14:10

Lots of fresh air and vigorous exercise.
Sleep with a window open unless it's several degrees below freezing.
Lots of healthy food - fruit and veg especially.
Lots of contact with small children Smile
Wash hands frequently but not obsessively.

Hairyhat · 09/10/2017 14:48

I'm always getting colds but my OH doesn't and I think it's to do with lots of exercise. He has LOADS and I just have a moderate tiny amount. I'm also in closer proximity to 7 year old who always gets them too

Hairyhat · 09/10/2017 14:50

Also, he never washes his hands and I do much more often so I would say the hand washing isn't relevant.
