  1. boy or girl? girl
  1. age when patching started? 2y 7mths
  1. age when finished patching?
  1. or if still patching age now? 2y 9mths
  1. glasses yes or no? yes
  1. type of patch?, as much info as poss
adhesive patch sticks over the eye - colourful pink, musical notes, camouflage etc.
  1. Any problems with patching? DD2 hates them and does complain when you first stick it on but is fine straight after. She never attempts to pull it off and just accepts that it is something she has to put up with. She sometimes has a red line under the eye after it is removed and I know that she does not enjoy having it torn off.
  1. What helped with patching? bribery sweets for first week when we removed it.
  1. What would be useful to support patching?
a story featuring a child with a patch would probably appeal

I am an optometrist in the US and so have had many patients who wear a patch. The ones available for purchase are generally awful. Either they have this stupid point on the front that scratches the back of their glasses or they have adhesive which a lot of kids are allergic to! One of the moms started making her own and I have since encouraged this as it makes the kids feel better to have a nice, comfortable patch.

Good luck in your endeavor!

  8. What helped with patching? we have done sticker charts, ATM because only 1 hour he sets a kitchen timer for 57 minutes, so he knows exactly when to take it off!
  9. What would be useful to support patching? difficult question, but maybe in our case stickers with cars on or similar. Or even books about children going through the same and how the patches helped their eye/s
SofiaAmes · 10/04/2007 07:50

Agree with Jaberwocky. There is a child at my ds's school who has a permanent eye patch and they are clearly made by her mother and totally totally cool. She has a load of different ones iwth sparkles and sequins and embroidery. She doesn't seem to mind wearing them and I think quite a few of the other kids are envious. We are in usa too. Maybe it's a us thing.

carol i am cod(!)

chocolateface · 10/04/2007 10:29

I think ther's an episode of Balamory where a boy who wears a patch goes to have an eye test.

Oblomov · 10/04/2007 11:43

I will try and find the Balamory episode chocolateface.

LOL at it being cool in the US - Jaberwocky and sofiaAmes.

I think it is what we should all be striving for, to make it cool.

Ds thinks it's cool.I remember telling Cod, when "eye doctor" told ds, to take a break from patching, he got a bit upset.
No eye patch. Ohh - he said.
He was all gutted. No more attention for him.

  1. boy or girl? girl
  2. age when patching started? 3
  3. age when finished patching? 5
  4. or if still patching age now?
  5. glasses yes or no? no glasses
  6. type of patch?, as much info as poss, sticky skin colour fabric junior size
  7. Any problems with patching? patch would often come unstuck in hotter weather , left red marks on face quite often
  8. What helped with patching? consistant times my dd would be fine all week, at school at nursery but at the weekend sometimes I forgot she would make a fuss m had to stick to routine no allowances otherwise we would be off arguing about it.
  9. What would be useful to support patching? more creative colours or maybe patterns I had to have a supply of stickers which often would not stick to the fabric to keep interest going.

Fairly relieved patching is over due to all the constant questions and probing from adults in the street , bus etc, which then made dd self concious and created stress daily with hoping she would'nt take it off after I dropped her to nursery etc.

sorry forgot to add patching did not improve dd sqint at all or glasses she has normal- above vision in both eyes, she has now had squint op to correct squint and is due to have one more op later this year and then should be fully straight with both eyes , attends Moorfields and will until age of 8 I think.

  1. boy or girl? boy
  2. age when patching started?
  3. age when finished patching?

Right eye was patched from 18 months to 2 years. Lazieness swapped eyes and has had left eye patched from 3.5 years to present (4.3)

  1. or if still patching age now? 4.3
  2. glasses yes or no? yes
  3. type of patch?, as much info as poss - stick on fabricy ones, white with stickers and also some patterned (army/space/sports and planes)
  4. Any problems with patching? doesn't always want to wear it, often comes unpeeled at the edges, if he cries while wearing it he finds it very uncomfortable.
  5. What helped with patching? Bribery!
  6. What would be useful to support patching? more design choice perhaps? DS loves to see children other children with patches - there was one on TV the other day and he thought it was great! Perhaps story book or something? Reward system?
carol3 · 12/04/2007 21:36

thanks everyone for all your replies, its been so useful, anymore would be great.
I think a site providing, help ideas patches and maybe a childrens book, would be good then.
The only help I had from my local hospital when dd2 first started patching was to give me splints to put her arms in to stop her pulling the patch off!
Sorry cod crap with names
have a really bad memory for names and numbers.

hello! yes i am! well, just starting.

  1. boy or girl? girl
  2. age when patching started? 4 months old
  3. age when finished patching? n/a
  4. or if still patching age now? yes, and we are told we will have to patch up to 7/8 hrs a day up to 10 years as she's had no vision in her bad eye for first 4 months so has to learn to see. poor us...
  5. glasses yes or no? yes
  6. type of patch?, as much info as poss we've been given Opticlude plain flesh-colour stick-on plaster style. I have also bought 1 pirate style and 1 that goes over glasses from the US from ebay (about £10 in total inc postage), and will see how we get on with those. She's too young to care what she looks like but doesn't like taking off the sticky ones
  7. Any problems with patching? we're just about to start, ask again in 6 months!!!
  8. What helped with patching? n/a
  9. What would be useful to support patching? I was told some people use straightjackets so their kids don't pull them off?! Loads of people seem to give up, or not manage the required time patched. So much help is obviously needed! sorry not much help,

good luck xxx
