Has anyone found a good way to get rid of cystitis?

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 14/09/2017 17:26

This is the 3rd time in months I have had it. First time I had antibiotics which got rid of it but it came back a few weeks later so I had some very strong antibiotics which got rid of it.

Now it's coming back again, I can feel a stinging sensation when pee. Does anyone have any remedies to get rid of it? It's getting me down now Sad

Get some d-mannosse powder (check out reviews online) I used to be plagued with cystitis and have never had it since

Twinkie1 · 14/09/2017 17:30

Flat lemonade or lemon barley water.

lampert · 14/09/2017 17:35

Drink drink drink and flush it out. Very occasionally it works.

feel for you OP, I really do.

I had a real problem over several years with horrendous cystitis, I'd be on the loo constantly and in agony. I could always pinpoint it to sex - I used to find sex uncomfortable and it would feel like it was bruising my bladder and all the online / usual remedies / preventative measures didn't make a jot of difference. Eventually, (after I ended up in tears after yet another bout) the doctor gave me a one a day antibiotic for three months and I haven't had one since. Get to the doctor and get antibiotics just in case - you don't want to be in agony all weekend x

Teaspoon of bicarb dissolved in a glass of water. Then a couple of ibuprofen and lots more water. Hot water bottle too.

beachygirl · 14/09/2017 17:47

At the first sign of an attack, stir a teaspoonful of bicarb into half a pint of water and drink it. Repeat this several times over the next few hours – this will dilute your urine, reduce acidity and help to flush out germs. Take paracetomol and a hot water bottle on tummy may help. Drink as much water as you can bear, at least three half pints in the first hour. Read Angel Kilmartin's book. www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Cystitis-Angela-Kilmartin/dp/0099367807/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1505407644&sr=1-4&keywords=angela+kilmartin+++cystitis&tag=mumsnetforum-21

If you have had cystitis 3 times in a short time you need to go back to your Gp. I've had problems for years and last year had cystitis 6 times in four months. Was sent to see a specialist at hospital had tests and eventually was given a one dose a day antibiotic for 6 months. Finished that 2 month ago and been ok. It is so painful you can try potassium citrate you can get a bottle from the chemist but go back to your doctor x

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 14/09/2017 18:42

Thank you. I will go with the bi-carb tonight to start with and try to see the go tomorrow. The doctor said last time the antibiotics were like the "domestos" of antibiotics! I thought they worked but obviously not Sad

Could alcohol be a factor? I drank quite a bit the last week but haven't had an alcohol since the first sign of the cystitis showing because obviously it irritates it.

Get some Waterfall D-Mannose tablets off amazon. I had a year of recurring cystitis, pretty much once a month and these managed to stop it. Also, I try to avoid alcohol because it definitely re starts the infection for me, so does very spicy food and lots of meat Confused

PollyPerky · 14/09/2017 19:31

Have you had the wee cultured to see which bugs are there? Is the AB the right one? You may not have an infection- it could be due to the physical effects as you say. Are you doing all the usual stuff like weeing before sex, no more than 5 mins afterwards, washing with some plain water, and your partner washing showering before as well? Sorry if you are- just mentioning.

It may be there is no bacteria but you are sore, or your bladder is sore still. Avoid booze, citrus drinks, tea and coffee and the other stuff people have suggested. Ibuprofen can harm the kidneys and also be 'acidic' in the bladder so use parac. instead.

if you are anywhere near peri menopause this could also be caused by low estrogen which makes the urethra more delicate and likely to get sore or for bugs to take hold. Vaginal estrogen (from GP) is the answer. you use if for 2 weeks daily, then 2 x a week forever.

lovemylover · 14/09/2017 20:12

I am just getting over a bout of Cystitis, had 3 days of ABs, which didnt work, then chemist suggested potassium citrate which didnt seem to work either, was in so much pain i couldnt wee, thought bladder was going to burst, rang 111 and Dr faxed a prescription through to chemist for Nitrofurantoin, 7 day course, which within 24 hours made a big difference,
If you are menopausal or post menopausal it could be the reason,
My daughter thought she had Cystitis, but the Dr said after a urine sample it was E coli related,it went on longer than normal cystitis

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/09/2017 20:18

In terms of getting rid of a single bout, I have found the best way is to get a litre bottle of water and sit on the loo and drink and flush through for half an hour or so. Repeat an hour or so later as necessary. Take a good book. It's grim but it works, and obviously only if you have the time! Also ibuprofen helps

Not a substitute for ABs if required of course, and recurrent bouts need investigation

NanTheWiser · 14/09/2017 22:51

Another big fan of D mannose, although expensive it really does work, and can be taken prophylactically as a prevention. And no nasty side effects from ABs.

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 15/09/2017 07:27

I think I will try this d mannose stuff!

Cystitis sachets. Ibuprofen. Hot water bottle. Plenty of fluids.

Tends to work for me

Yogagirl123 · 15/09/2017 07:41

I suffer reoccurring UTI, lemon barley water is brilliant, drink it as strong as you can bare, I was told to avoid cranberry juice. D-Manoose can also help. Trimethoprim is the only antibiotic that seems to work for me. Make sure you drink plenty. Alcohol may irritate your bladder too. Try to have a wee after sex. Avoid having a wee before sex if you can. Good luck OP UTI is horrible.

Timmytoo · 15/09/2017 07:43

Yes, had daily cystitis plus an operation to stretch my urinary tract as a last resort. Nothing worked, turned out that any soft drinks (Only one), more than two cups of tea a day, unwatered down wine would cause my cystitis. Stopped soft drinks completely after I saw another urologist, I water down my wine or put lots of ice in it and I've barely had it again. It sounds like it could be intestinal cystitis which is recurring and what I had.

lettuceWrap · 15/09/2017 07:43

Cut artificial sweeteners out of your diet and see if that helps. they can be an irritant to the bladder for lots of people.
Me and my DM both find diet drinks trigger (and other artificiality sweetened food)urinary frequently, irritation and the beginnings of cystitis...

Timmytoo · 15/09/2017 07:44

Sorry and all fruit juices especially acidic ones like orange.

Teddy7878 · 15/09/2017 07:47

I can't have things like wine or prosecco as they really irritate my bladder. I can tolerate clear spirits like gin though

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 15/09/2017 08:59

I must admit I did drink far too much wine last week and over the weekend as I was having a rough time and it seemed to creep up to more and more glasses a night to take the edge off. Rose and red wine. That coy be it triggering my bladder. I am usually ok with gin and slimline tonic.

I think I will cut the wine out for now and then just have a glass or two now and then. I prefer gin and tonic anyway as it's far less calorific.

I have called the doctor for a call back. The receptionist said my last urine sample from the last bout that was sent off for testing was fine and no further action needed so I am confused because the antibiotics they gave me got rid of it until now but if they are saying there was no infection last time then I am confused?

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 15/09/2017 09:00

I meant to say I am under 40 and no where near menopause! Smile

OP posts:
tocas · 15/09/2017 09:19

Just because she said no further action doesn't mean there wasn't an infection - it could be that the bug was shown to be sensitive to the antibiotics you were given.

Drink fluids ++ and ensure you're emptying your bladder after sex and not wearing thongs / g-strings.

Teddy7878 · 15/09/2017 10:07

You could have an intolerance to wine. Cut it out for a fortnight and see if your symptoms improve

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 15/09/2017 13:17

I spoke to the doctor and I have to take in a sample today which they won't find out results until Monday but is giving me some antibiotics to take over the weekend. He said if I get it again they will explore further. One thing I have noticed but put it down to back pain is I get a pain in my lower back on the left side which I can only describe as "deep" and feels like I am being squeezed. I said that to the doctor put he didn't seem worried.

An intolerance to wine ShockShockShockNo!

I empty my bladder before sex and after when I clean myself up Wink

Another recommendation for DMannose. Expensive but worth it. I take it daily. Also cut out caffeine and reduced wine intake (with me it was white wine causing a problem). I wash with medicated soap after sex and have another DMannose & AB then too. So romantic!
