Could it be chicken pox??

DS has just come out of hospital from having a tonsil and adenoidectomy, he's been very subdued and lethargic, I thought from the op.

When I changed his nappy on Saturday, I noticed a little spot just below his belly under his nappy and didn't think much of it. Last night when I changed him it is a tiny blister. Now I've just seen a blister the size of a pinhead on his shoulder blade... could it be the start of chicken pox? How long to the blisters take to appear?

if it is he will get morein the space of a few hours.

AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:11

maybe you should tell the hospital in case as well? if hes been near other poorly children?

MrsDoolittle · 02/04/2007 17:12

It is that time of year but pox happen very quickly.
There'll be more this evening

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:13

I'll give them a ring if it is. I had a feeling that the spots came faster than that though... I hope!!!

So if he had the first one on Saturday is it likely to not be then as it's been that long?

OP posts:
AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:14

sometimes they do. ds1 didn't get them very fast yet ds2 you could virtually see them popping up on him as he sat there

AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:14

saturday? i would have thought that he would have more by now if it was CP tbh

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:14

bugger.

They need to get them, just not this week!!

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:15

OP posts:
AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:16

keep a close eye on him over the next day or two. Is he itching it??

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:19

Doesn't seem to be but he's just sleepy -he can't be bothered to move lol

AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:22

aww bless him. might be like it cos of the op though? he might even have it, but just very mildly. dd2 only got 2 spots i think when she got it.

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:26

Just looked at the one under his nappy - it's got bigger!!

Do they grow then pop then itch?

OP posts:
AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2007 17:27

oh dear. has he got anymore anywhere? look under his arms as well. get on MSN!!

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 17:29

Is my MSN not on? I think I'm online... as far as I know!

Have just checked him all over but on;y those two. The one on his shoulder is exactly the same as the first one started.

no your offline hun. hes got 2 then?? eek!!

BettySpaghetti · 02/04/2007 17:33

Sounds like it is ZC.

DS had it a couple of weeks ago. He had 1 big blister spot on his neck on the Weds, 2 or 3 more appeared on the Thur (we still weren't completely convinced it was CP by this point)and then the majority appeared Fri/Sat so they came out quite slowly really.

If it is, give him lots of baths with bicarb in help dry out the spots.

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 19:00

It's looking more and more likely. Typical -n I've been hoping that they get it for the last couple of Easters because I had it when I was 16 and it was hell. But it's dd's 1st b'day on thursday so now no-one will come !!!

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 20:46

Ok when I took his nappy off before bed to give him some air, he scratched the blister like mad. That's not a good sign is it?

What does it mean for me being pg? Am I safe because I've had it?

pooka · 02/04/2007 20:55

Oh ZC! I think they're almost programmed to get it when it is least convenient.
DS had 1 spot on his bottom earlier. Nothing else yet, but since dd is currently covered (albiet scabbed and non-contagious now) I'm expecting that the pox will get ds too.
I don't know the ages of your dcs, but is there a chance that they've all had contact with the same contagious person, or is it more likely that they'll get it from one another?
DD had contact at pre-school. Came out in the spots the sat before last, so missed last week of term. DS now possibly has it.

pooka · 02/04/2007 20:57

Oh but good news in that as far as I am aware there is no problem being in contact since you remember having it and you've still got a way to go in the pregnancy. Would only be more worrying if your dcs had it nearer the due date, when they could pass it on to the baby/ies.

zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 20:58

Come to think of it, if anyone was going to get it I'd have thought it'd be dd1 getting it from school as ds is at home still (2.9) No doubt the other 2 are bound to get it now though! How long does the horrible bit last? He's really not happy!! (Except now I can't tell what is post-op and what is pox!)

OP posts:
zephyrcat · 02/04/2007 20:58

At least that's good news!

Definitely the pox! My 2 have just had it. DS1 started with 2 small spots with blisters and the following day had loads more. DS2 got 1 spot a few days later but it took about 3 or 4 days for any more to appear. He actually ended up having it worse that DS1. I found calpol, bicarbonate of soda in the bath and aqueos calamine cream helped. Both were loads better after about a week.

pooka · 02/04/2007 21:02

Well the op isn't going to make it easier if he has got it, poor mite.
DD will be 4 in July. Apart from 1 rough night (bit of a temp) and a very itchy day she was alright. Gave her piriton and put Eurax cream on her spots. Also tried phenergen for the first time, which really seemed to knock her out at night and to stop her waking and trying to worry the scabs.

Has your ds had a cough in the last few days (bit tricky to tell I should imagine given the op), because dd had a cough about 2 days before the spots appeared. Started as about 1 or 2 innoucuous looking spots on her back one day. NExt day about 7. Next day more than 100!
