Could it be chicken pox??

DS has just come out of hospital from having a tonsil and adenoidectomy, he's been very subdued and lethargic, I thought from the op.

When I changed his nappy on Saturday, I noticed a little spot just below his belly under his nappy and didn't think much of it. Last night when I changed him it is a tiny blister. Now I've just seen a blister the size of a pinhead on his shoulder blade... could it be the start of chicken pox? How long to the blisters take to appear?

He hasn't been able to cough if he wanted to poor little mite! He's really down though. Is there any point in taking him to the docs or should I take him just to confirm he has got it?

Hmmm. Not sure really. I didn't with dd, because it was so obvious and because she was otherwise in good health. Bt then your ds has just had an op.
I'd probably ring and ask if you can wait in a side room since he may be contagious. That's waht they do here.

It's chickenpox [bursting into tears emoticon!]

He had a couple more blisters this morning then more by the time we got to the docs.

DD's 1st b'day has been cancelled, as has easter

When I asked doc if dd1 & 2 will def get it he said more than likely, and they will get it much worse than ds

why did he say they will get them muchworse?
he cannot possibly know that

zephyrcat · 03/04/2007 14:24

He said that within a family the first one to get it has it mildest, the others who then catch it get it worse because there is more of it in the air/for them to catch - if that makes sense?! Can't think how he worded it but that's what he meant!!

tbh you are probably over the worst of it now. once the spots all come out it isn't as bad as leading up to it.
your other dcs will probably get it 2 weeks to the day your DS got it. so you will get about a week off before it all kicks off again.

i don't know how the doctor can say the others will be worse. Doesn't fit with the experience of friends/family i know. Let us know though!

the worst bit is that no one wants to see you or wants you to visit!

My Mum has said she's now not coming for dd2's b'day on Thursday which means she won't get any of her presents from family and they won't have their Easter eggs!

I'm thinking I could go and meet her in town and just not have her to the house - does that work? She woudn't catch it from me would she? (She's worried about shingles)

OP posts:

You don't catch shingles. Shingles happens when the dormant chicken pox in your system (which you have once you have had it) comes out, usually when you are immuno-suppressed, stressed, run-down and so on. She can't "catch" shingles from being with your dcs. So so silly not to have contact with your children. Honestly - google shingles and it should explain.

People with shingles can give chicken pox to people who haven't had it, but not vice versa.

DS's spots seem to have disappeared emoticon Am sure he'sgoing to get it, and he does seem rather tired today, but it hasn't really come out.

Think your doctor is wrong in his belief that the others will get it worse. Not true IMO. They will get the virus (most likely) but whether they get it worse or not depends more on them rather than the fact that they're catching it from him.

pooka · 03/04/2007 15:25

She should of course come to your house for the birthday/easter. Better than you traipsing out with contagious children IMO.

With dd it took about 5 days for all her spots to appear, by which time the earliest ones had scabbed. She got it a week ago last Saturday (so 10 days ago) and ds, who will catch it from her, may be in the early stages now.

zephyrcat · 03/04/2007 18:04

My Mum works at a doctors surgery and asked at work about coming here and they all advised her against it. I meant I would go into town and meet her on my own to get the kid's stuff etc but I wondered if I would be carrying it because I am around the children and she could pick it up that way? Prob not, it does sound silly but you never know!!

Lulabelle yours osund at the exact same stage as ds - got his first spot on Saturday, more been slowly appearing but lots more today, and all still blisters
