Dd 2 has been unwell for a week (virus), we took her to the doctors thursday, once in the morning and then we were asked to bring her back in the afternoon, there was no improvement so she was given antibiotics and asked to return in the morning, dh took her back friday morning, her temp had gone down and the doctor said we should see improvement that day and today and if she was still bad on sunday to call the out of hour doctor.
Anyway apart from her temp going down we hav'nt seen much improvement, she has'nt eaten for a few days but is sipping water, tried to give her toast this morning but went straight through her. Im worried as this is the 2nd bug this month and she has'nt realy eaten since last time she was ill (4 weeks ago). She cant sit up or stay awake for very long and is very grumpy when she is awake.
Should i call the doctor or am i not giving her enought time to get over the virus?

Ring NHS direct se what they say.

mm22bys · 31/03/2007 16:59

Call NHS Direct or go to A&E.

Why did the dr give a/b if it's a virus?

It's good she's at least sipping water. Can you give her something in the water so she's getting some nutrition?

All the best, you must be so worried about her, how old is she?

Boco · 31/03/2007 17:11

I'd call the out of hours doctor and at least speak to them over the phone. If you explain, they can decide if they need to see her again or leave it a bit longer. If it's a virus antibiotics won't help, but if she has any sickness and diarrhoea, it's dehydration that you need to watch out for.

mm22bys · 31/03/2007 17:13

Sorry just seen in the header that your dd is 1. Must learn to read these things fully....

You must be extra worried, these things are so scary when they're little....

Hope someone can give you answers soon,

Just tried her with some banana and it went straight through her, she seems to be hungry but nothing will stay in her.

Not sure why the doctor gave her antibiotics (maybe to shut me up[rin])

Maybe! The drs at my GP are pretty reluctant to give a/b, which I guess is a good thing...

Have you tried the "BRAT" diet? I think it stands for Banana, Rice, Apple Sauce, and Toast.

Sounds like the first and the last haven't worked yet, but have you tried the other two?

Good luck,

As you are concerned I would call the doctor to be honest. The diagnosis of virus might be incorrect. Better to be safe than sorry. That is what the doctor is there ffor

NewDKmum · 31/03/2007 19:27

I would also call the doctor - it may be worth asking if you should give her some of that powder you dissolve in water to help prevent dehydration - I think it's electrolytes?

elasticbandstand · 31/03/2007 19:42

you can use flat coke..

pobletsmum · 31/03/2007 20:14

Marne, how are things now? Have you rung the doctor yet?

Definitely ring the doctor. I don't want to appear overdramatic, but if it was me, I would seriously consider a trip to A&E to get my baby checked by a paediatrician or one of his/her team. A week seems a long time to be that poorly - especially now she is weak & not very alert. Being the 2nd bug in a short space of time won't have helped either, if she didn't recover fully in between. Poor little mite

My friend's husband is a consultant paediatrician, and says that he is ALWAYS happy for a concerned mum/dad/carer to bring their baby for a check at the hospital, even if they just end up needing Calpol & rest etc. It's so much better to be overcautious than missing a problem that could have been being treated. That said, if you can speak to a helpful GP (not always possible for me), you might be able to get all the advice you need.

I really hope DD2 is improving...

Called the doctor this morning as diarrhoea has got worse durring the night, i managed to speek to our loccal doctor who she has been seeing. He has told me to stop the antibiotics and continue offering water evry 5 mins for the next 2-3 hours and if no improovment to phone the out of hours doc again. I cant see how 2-3 hours is going to make any diffrence as she has been like this all week.
Also how do i know if she has made any improovement if she is asleep, do i wake her to offer a drink? i would feel a bit mean waking her.

Yes I think you should still rouse her to try the fluids. Is she keeping the fluids down? Phone doc back and voice your worries about her sleeping
Sounds awful..poor thing. I would take to casualty ,it should be quiet this time of day.

Marne · 01/04/2007 09:58

She's keeping thigs down (not being sick) but has diarhoea after each drink.

brimfull · 01/04/2007 09:59

brimfull · 01/04/2007 10:18

just check beforehand that the hospital you go to has a paediatric dept, some don't and will just divert you.

Marne · 01/04/2007 10:20

Just get to A & E - dehyrdation in a child after being so ill can be very serious , if in doubt whether local hospital has a pediatric A & E check out their website quickly .

Dont bother with GP or NHS direct, go to hospital.

Themis · 01/04/2007 16:44

Hows things ?

Marne · 01/04/2007 20:46

A bit of an update (sorry if long)
We tried to phone the doctor but phone lines were very busy so i took dd2 to A&E to find there was a 3 hour wate, got very as dd2 seemed very unwell, after 2 hours we got moved to a side room and waited another hour to see a doctor (one that couldnt speak good english and kept callindg dd2 'he') anyway after seeing 2 doctors we were sent to the childrens ward where another doctor looked at her.
It turned out she has a very bad virus which a few children on the ward also had and they told me that she had had a reaction to the antibiotics that the doctor should'nt have even given to her. By 5.30pm she had managed to keep in a bit of toast but was still a bit grumpy, at 7pm i was given the choice to take her home or let her stay in for the night, i brought her home and she seems a bit brighter and is now fast asleep.
Lets hope she is feeling better tomorow.

Thankyou all for the advice, i think i did the rite thing by taken her and the doctors and nurses at the hospital were great.
