Really concerned about ovarian cancer

Hi
I'm trying not to worry but I'm really concerned that I have ovarian cancer.
I have a little boy and I'm really worried.

I've had pressure in my lower area. Had a scan last year which revealed two tiny fibroids (no problem). Everything else was fine. Feels like a lot of gas.

Went to the doctors yesterday and a locum said given my history that it's highly likely that I have ovarian cancer. He didn't check my tummy or anything, just came out with it very blazee and finished off on a very worrying take care of yourself.

I'm trying so hard not to think about it but I'm really scared.
I've been sent for another scan (awaiting the letter). Plus had bloods today.

How old are you? I'm really shocked that he would just come out and say that?! Without an examination or anything. What history is he talking about? Have family member had it? I know it's hard but I would be ignoring what he said as he sounds very strange and "take care of yourself" way to scare the shit out of someone stupid man.

If you had tha scan and they said fibroids could they have grown over th past year? Sorry don't know a lot about it. But it could be a lot of things before ovarian cancer. Have you checked with your diet? I know if I've ate a lot of carby foods in a day I get gassy and bloated.

You should get your bloods back soon perhaps you request to see your regular doctor for results as the other one is obviously useless.

Think positive if you can. Are you fit and well otherwise? Do you eat well etc. Try put it to the back of your mind for now and take one thing at a time

MrsDoylesTeabags · 23/08/2017 11:57

What!Shock what a rubbish Dr. Ive had fibroids and they can grow quickly and depending on their position even small ones can cause the symptoms you described.
Without a thorough examination and full medical history I don't know how the Dr can come to this conclusion and even if they did, they shouldn't say that the way they did.
Try to see your regular Dr when you get your results and tell them what was said during your appointment.

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 12:26

Thanks for responding.
Yes I was really shocked by his conclusion.
Not the sort of bedside manner I expected.

Most of the regular doctors I knew before have left....changed management.

Really left me freaked out to put it mildly.
Very shocked that a Doctor would say this without reading notes or having facts.

As far as history is concerned he just asked me if I had a operation in the past. I told him I had my right tube removed for an ectopic pregnancy and two tiny fibroids revealed last year May.

The gas started whilst away ...the hotel table wasn't ready until late and so we ate both nights around 10pm. Certain foods could have caused the uncomfortable feeling.

Surely if it was cancer the scan would have shown it last year?

Trying my best to not worry (easier said than done).

By the way I'm 40.
General diet is quite good. Could improve in little areas .

teainbed · 23/08/2017 12:35

Sorry did he really say it's highly likely?? And not refer you urgently??

ponderingprobably · 23/08/2017 12:41

Well the need for a scan shows that cancer is not a forgone conclusion, otherwise they would just start treatment straightaway instead.

I would have thought your other scan would have picked up a tumour. Maybe this scan might be more sensitive but if you had anything sizeable I am sure it would have shown previously.

Numerous things can cause your symptoms. Your doctor mentioning your previously OP was probably just referencing the risk of scar tissue becoming cancerous. However if the risk were that bad no one would have anything ever except emergency operations.

If it is cancer it sounds like it will be picked up early with you having a scan only last year.

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 12:51

Definitely said highly likely.
Trying to think about his conclusion.
They normally do a scan and bloods .
Thanks for your comments. Most appreciated.

I thought I had ovarian cancer recently OP, I had all the symptoms, the nurse I saw said I had all the symptoms. My mum has breast cancer so increased risk etc. I was shitting myself but I had the blood tests done and they came back that I didn't have it. I know it doesn't help to say don't worry as I know how scary it is, just know that it's not always cancer. I still don't know what's causing my symptoms and doctors aren't very bothered about finding out either Hmm

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 13:04

Thanks

I can't help thinking you misheard him.
Could you request he give you a call to confirm?

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 13:45

Thanks. Didn't mishear.

Belindaboom · 23/08/2017 13:47

Your locum is an idiot. Book to see someone else- it's good to be taken seriously but you can't base a diagnosis on nothing.

Belindaboom · 23/08/2017 13:49

Is the scan at least urgent? I'd unleash holy hell and get it moved forward. Not helpful at all sorry. I should add, I've had ovarian cancer and even as he felt the massive tumour in my stomach the gp promised it wasn't Hmm

DubiousCredentials · 23/08/2017 13:49

Given what you've said it seems more likely that he meant highly unlikely but either muttered or just said the wrong word. What was your response?

missyB1 · 23/08/2017 13:54

Sorry did he order you a new scan and carry out blood tests? Please don't tell me he told you that you might have cancer and did nothing?

teainbed · 23/08/2017 14:02

OP I don't want to minimise your distress but genuinely as a young woman, with those symptoms and a scan with fibroids on it earlier I'd think it highly unlikely you have ovarian cancer but the new scan and bloods are to reassure you.

Footle · 23/08/2017 14:04

Ask to talk to the practice manager. You haven't had a proper consultation at all.

sadie9 · 23/08/2017 14:07

So he didn't press your abdomen and all over your tummy? I also think he may have said 'highly unlikely' or genuinely said the wrong word.
The gas could well be caused by your trip away. I have stomach acid issues and these things can hang around for a couple of weeks. Especially if you were eating rich food and drinking more wine than normal. I also have a bladder prolapse which can cause pressure down there (is yours pressure downwards on the pelvic floor?) especially in the evening times, or if I haven't had a poo for a while.
You could ring the surgery and explain that he said it was 'highly likely' and you just want to check if that is what you heard correctly?

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 14:09

I asked him how he can draw a conclusion of highly likely for ovarian cancer. He repeated yes it's highly likely based on your history .
I'm waiting for the bloods.

Hello I am just back from hospital same symptoms turned out to be (after a CT scan) an abscess on Fallopian tube. Keyhole surgery next week to remove. Appeared out of nowhere. Hope you get some answers and reassurance op.

Dawnedlightly · 23/08/2017 14:19

Honestly- he mispoke.

TwitterQueen1 · 23/08/2017 14:28

No doctor should / would say this. They cannot possibly tell whether or not you have it from your history alone. If he did say this, you need to complain.

Ovarian cancer presents in different ways (often without any symptoms) and the only way to get a firm diagnosis is via bloods, CT scan and possibly (not always) a biopsy.

Good luck. I cannot believe your dr said this tbh.

Sun12 · 23/08/2017 14:38

It is shocking to hear that a doctor would say something like this, but he definitely did.
Anyway the bloods and scan will provide further info.
Thanks everyone.

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/08/2017 14:43

Are you sure he definitely said it? I once went on the doctor when I was really really worried about something, and I heard them say that given the circumstances it was likely that I had it. However, they hadn't said that, it was just my mind playing (evil) tricks.

ImperialBlether · 23/08/2017 14:47

I think he meant "highly unlikely", OP. I would ask for a quick phone call to clarify.
