Got chucked out of the hairdresser for having nits....

I was mortified! Has this happened to anyone else?

I've since done full treatments twice, 8 days apart. However, my OH can still see a few of the eggs glued to the hair

Is it safe to go back to the hairdresser on the basis the eggs are dead but just stuck to the hair?

I desperately need to get my roots done and have an appointment this Thursday but am scared of the humiliation again Confused

No they won't accept you with eggs in your hair.

How would you feel if you went to the hairdresser and got nits?

Gorgosparta · 13/08/2017 18:40

No, you need to get someone to go through your hair and pick them out.

Takes a while but the hair dresser has no idea if you have actually treated them.

gamerchick · 13/08/2017 18:41

God my worst nightmare. I spend ages the day before an appointment just to check until the husband gets cross with me.

Can husband not take the eggs out for you?

PourquoiPas · 13/08/2017 18:42

You need to actually nit comb them out. Buy a nitty gritty and a cheap bottle of shampoo and ask OH to comb through for you.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/08/2017 18:43

Sadly I had this a few times as a teen; my sisters were excellent at infecting anyone with nits.

You can't still have eggs - it's either get husband/friend to pick them out or wait for them to grow out, sadly.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/08/2017 18:43

Nitty Gritty comb and comb them out!

user1473602935 · 13/08/2017 18:44

Ah ok, so I must use the nit comb. It didn't say that on my treatment (or at least I didn't it)

What a pain, I have SO much hair! I did try myself but will get OH to do it

Loads of cheap conditioner and a nit comb, a good movie on TV and set DH to work.

Gorgosparta · 13/08/2017 18:50

Honestly i didnt fi d the conditioner and comb worked on me or dd.

It seemed easier to see them when it was dry. But its worth a go. Just check again after the conditioner.

user1473602935 · 13/08/2017 18:53

They are really hard to get rid of!

Cover your head in loads of cheap conditioner, really massage it into the scalp and leave it on for 5 minutes, then tip your head upside down and comb through all of your hair vigorously from root to tip. Start with a normal comb then once your hair is detangled move onto to a very narrow toothed comb. Pay special attention to around the ears and the nape of the neck.

This will help loosen the eggs and also remove any final lice.

Dry your hair with a hairdryer.

Then get someone to comb through with nitty gritty (and a magnifying glass and a strong anglepoise-type lamp or phone torch) and make sure every egg is removed.

Also make sure you've boil washed all of your pillows and pillowcases, your bedsheets, duvet cover, blankets, sofa throws and cushion covers, towels and any cuddly toys that might have been near hair as well as any scarves or hats you've been wearing (bit easier in summer as less likely to have been wearing scarves or a coat where the hood / any furry/fluffy collar would need washing too). This really needs to be done across the whole house.

gamerchick · 13/08/2017 18:54

You haven't used a nit comb at all?

m0therofdragons · 13/08/2017 18:55

Get a nitty gritty rather than a basic nit comb! Loads of conditioner and comb it through. I have 3dds with long hair and my dh quite frankly sucks at it. I've only had them once thank god but chemicals don't kill the eggs so seems pointless to me.

m0therofdragons · 13/08/2017 18:56

Oh and use ghds to straighten it as the heat seems to kill them too.

BluePheasant · 13/08/2017 18:56

It's better to just use the comb on wet hair. Conditioner makes it too slippery.

Letitrain · 13/08/2017 18:57

Have you got a friend who could check it for you and get it clear?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/08/2017 18:59

Have the rest of your family of you have one also been treated ?

user1473602935 · 13/08/2017 19:00

Thank you for all the helpful replies. I had used a teeny comb but found it very tricky so can't have done it properly. I've now ordered the nitty gritty comb and have scheduled in removal tomorrow night with OH!

AnneGrommit · 13/08/2017 19:04

Yeah, nitty gritty. You really don't need to wash stuff though - they don't live for long off the head.

AnneGrommit · 13/08/2017 19:05

And poor you! I live in horror of this happening. Not that I am especially nitty but I've caught them off the kids a couple of times over the years.

IAmTheDragon · 13/08/2017 19:09

I have memories of going to the hairdresser to get rid of my nits, when I was a child. Does that not happen any more? off topic

codswallopandbalderdash · 13/08/2017 19:12

bollocks advice about washing everything - bedding etc. Makes no difference. Don't understand why hairdresser is being so picky - nits are the empty eggs. There is nothing to infect others with.
But this doesn't help you.

And FWIW I am dreading next hair appointment as it takes months to get slot with my hairdresser and DC seem to have lice all the time at the moment. I will probably be in your position

Miserylovescompany2 · 13/08/2017 19:16

Some folk are lucky to be irritated by the nasty little pests straight away so can treat them effectively early on - my sister wasn't one of them - her hair was really thick and long - took weeks and weeks to clear them!

I always itch before I'm due at the hairdressers - it does make you paranoid though!

I hope the hairdresser was discreet and didn't refuse you in front of other clients?

3luckystars · 13/08/2017 19:23

Plaster your head with conditioner.
Comb each section and wipe off the comb. It will take an hour if you have tons of hair.
Do it again tomorrow and every second day this week. Then every 3 days for the next month.

Hedrin once is good but you have to keep combing. (Forever)

If you ever find another one, start this all over again.

The paranoia may never leave you though.

Good luck.

This happened to me at Centreparcs, of all places. Booked a haircut as a birthday treat and then had to do the walk of shame. I still cringe!
