Got chucked out of the hairdresser for having nits....

I was mortified! Has this happened to anyone else?

I've since done full treatments twice, 8 days apart. However, my OH can still see a few of the eggs glued to the hair

Is it safe to go back to the hairdresser on the basis the eggs are dead but just stuck to the hair?

I desperately need to get my roots done and have an appointment this Thursday but am scared of the humiliation again Confused

I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened too!

Just found you can go to a professional nit removal service but no idea how much I costs

Nits only survive where there's a supply of blood, so there's no need to boil wash/wash bedding, though you might still want to of course, but it's not essential.

Our DCs had nits earlier this year for the first time after DS 14 came home from secondary school with them...seems there's not the same vigilance as at primary school.

They spread like bastard wildfire.

Hours of combing every night for a couple of weeks with conditioner and Nitty Gritty was the only cure. ..the Hedrin lotion didn't work on its own, you MUST comb.

AnneGrommit · 13/08/2017 20:08

The lotion does work ime but it's easy to miss one or two ...

I've got thick curly hair down to my bum and DD has passed them on to me. So far I've nitty gritted with their solution and comb and also vamoosed. Still itching! Getting the bastard comb through my hair is a nightmare - it just gets wedged half way down. Any suggestions or am I going to have to cut it all off?

LockedOutOfMN · 14/08/2017 18:17

whethertheweather Smother your head with cheap conditioner and massage it right in (then wash hands) and leave it on like a mask for a good few minutes. Start with a wide toothed comb that will go through your hair, then switch to a narrower one, and so on until you're using the very finest toothed one. To be honest you don't need to worry so much about the ends / lengths. Combing vigorously on the scalp and near the head will break the legs of the lice and pull them and the eggs down the hair shaft (if it doesn't remove them). You can always comb through the lengths when the hair is damp but not with conditioner in.

Dry with the hottest hairdryer you can stand (on the scalp) and straighten if you want/can as nits seem to hate that.

Once you're clear, use a tea-tree / repellent spray daily and keep hair plaited / tied back firmly when around kids.

My girls got turned away with eggs in hair despite treating them over two weeks before. I treated them with nitwitz, new stuff I hadn't seen before that kills eggs too, then sectioned off their hair and removed all eggs. Their hair was cut the next day.

whethertheweather · 14/08/2017 18:24

Thanks locked. I was worried if I could only get the comb from my scalp to half way down my hair I'd be left with a ring of lice half way down! DD is 14 - thought we were long past this issue....

3luckystars · 14/08/2017 22:18

I had similar hair and had to cut it once I had gotten rid of them. I spent hours and hours combing. It was a nightmare.

I hope you all get rid of them soon.

user1473602935 · 16/08/2017 18:14

I have an appointment at the hairdresser to get I'm roots done tomorrow, and I'm scared!

I have now done another treatment and used the nitty gritty comb which pulled out about 30 eggs, gross but effective

OH can't see any eggs left in the hair (but he couldn't before either)

My scalp still feels a bit itchy but I think I'm paranoid!!

Should I just go to the hairdresser and hood for the best? Or pop in tonight to be checked in case I'll be wasting their time if I still have it (along with further humiliation!)

Ugh you poor thing! We've had two months of recurrent nits with two of our three DCs and it's just a nightmare. Make sure you use a nitty gritty metal comb through your conditioned hair. And just keep at it. I've been doing it daily for the past two weeks and we're finally winning.
I find the nitty gritty metal comb really helpful. Yes, behind the ears and nape of neck is where they really like to hang out.
Oh I feel all itchy now!

LockedOutOfMN · 16/08/2017 21:22

30 eggs is quite a lot. Is there anyone else who can check for you? Can your DH use a magnifying glass and a strong lamp? Or take photos of your own scalp zoomed in?

I just have a horrible feeling you haven't got them all...

Isadora2007 · 16/08/2017 21:26

😳
I had the joy of nits jut a few weeks before my wedding. Dd(7) was awful for them and had passed them on. I had mid-back length thick thick hair and was planning curls so requiring sectioning off etc.
We weren't at home (I got married elsewhere) so I had to enlist the help of a mum friend I only knew a tiny bit. It was bonding experience anyway 😂
Good news was it worked and I managed my hair do for the wedding as planned.

Good luck tomorrow!!!! 🐜 🐜

I'm itching just reading this....

elevenclips · 16/08/2017 21:38

30 eggs is a lot to come out I think. It probably means there are more, especially if you have thick/long hair. What treatment did you use and did it say to use substantially more for lots of hair?

d270r0 · 16/08/2017 21:38

Honestly I'd put off the appt until you're sure they've gone. 30 eggs is loads, if there is even 1 left then the hairdresser will not do your hair and it will be massively embarrassing. Have you checked your OHs hair, or any other family members? Its very likely to have passed over and then they can jump from them back to you again.

CornyCollins · 16/08/2017 21:44

I feel for you OP! I would give yourself another nit comb and put off the appointment another few days!

Just as an aside, what happens if a hairdresser is say halfway through putting a colour on your hair and then they find a stray egg? They may not see anything immediately if there's only one or two left and so start the colouring treatment.

Do they immediately wash it off and chuck you out half done?

user1473602935 · 16/08/2017 22:13

Oh dear, 30 is a lot is it!? I had no idea they were so hard to get rid of

I'm going to pop in and get them to check first thing, but sounds like I'll probably still have them

Thank you for your help everyone

I always found a flea comb (from the large selection at our local out of town pet shop) was the best things as they have a handle, are comfortable to use, and cover a wider area.

We used to use loreal elvive as it is nice and slippy and soaks in well and leaves the hair slippy so the next ones cannot stick the eggs on quite so well. Massage in well, leave 5 minutes and add a bit more.

As pp said, use a wide tooth comb and gradually move down to the fine toothed comb. The eggs are laid as close to the scalp as the lice can get, to keep them warm.

30 does not sound many to me. Once dd had them and I used lyclear out of desperations coz I was fed up of all the combing and that is what was recommended in the day. It did not kill any of the eggs and they all hatched out a few days later. I swear there were thousands of the little buggers. Shock

user1473602935 · 17/08/2017 08:45

I went to get checked - one girl thought I might and the other said I didn't, so they'll do me anyway. Phew! This has been a learning curve, little buggers!
