Oh, Valium. I've had that a couple of times & it makes me feel depressed. Xanax is much better & less vicious, imo. Good luck!

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2007 12:22

I have not heard of valium 'setting off' panic attacks, they are usually used to reduce the risk of one occuring.

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2007 12:26

vvvvv just try one, You will not get worked up on it. It makes you feel, well, calm, perhaps tired, chilled, less concerned about things, with a small amount, you will still be able to function normally whilst needing to, and then relax once you are in a position to, if at home, in front of the tv, once you are travelling and take one, when you get on the plane.

Try it when you have some time to yourself, if you really dont like how it makes you feel, you can sleep it off.

sauce · 29/03/2007 12:30

sorry, vicious prob the wrong word to use with someone unfamiliar with tranquilisers! Nothing bad will happen to you; you won't lose your mind or freak out or do or feel anything strange. "Comfortably numb" is the best way to describe the effects of tranquilisers.

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 15:40

OK THANKS ALL,IM GONNA DEFF TRY ONE TOMORROW AND AS I SAID I WILL LET YOU ALL KONW HOW I GOT ON.XX WIAH ME LUCK [LOOL] ONLY JOKING

Not sure if you would need to take it as well. I think most people are prescribed 2mg. So try your 5mg beforhand. I was given some when my back went into spasm. They must have relaxed me because I was in agony before I took them.

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 16:05

does alot of people take them when flying?i hope they work for me

OP posts:
mummydoc · 29/03/2007 16:07

vvvvvvv....i prescribe them for my patients who are nervous of flying and my advice is 2mg tablet on the way to the airport, another on boarding the palne if you start to feel edgy or panicky and then another 3-4 hrs later if still in the air, and then do the same for return trip. If you are getting very worked up i sometimes tell people to have one the night before so that they get some sleep and don't start their holiday tired. THEY will NOT start a panic attack they are in the class of medications used for treating panic attacks .

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 16:13

thankyou so much doc i wish i had a doctor as helping as you my doctor is shit!!!!!!!!!!i have been pricribed 5mg is that too much to take? im off to dominica so the time difference is a lot like 5 hours behind the uk so if i sleep on the plane thats a good thing a is that what they might do? i was gonna stay up all nite so i do go asleep on the plane what do you think? also i take my remady everywere with me so im hoping i can still take that with the tablets as its only a hurbal i dont supose it will do any harm will it doc??

lucky you going to the dominican republic ( though am just back from skiing so shouldn't complain) firstly yes diazapan is fine with herbal stuff , second i really wouldn't stay up all night , you will get more and more worked up and then be very tired and the stress of the airport check in etc could well set off a panic attack - not a good start to you holiday ! get to bed normally maybe using a 5mg tablet to help you get to sleep, and then you could try cutting the tblets in half to make 2.5mg ones or ask you doctor for some 2mg ones aswell as 5 mg is quite a hefty dose if you are not used to them, i am suggesting caution with the dose as though you do not want to be panicky you don't want to be really dopey if you have you LOs with you. the tablets effects last 4-6 hrs usually so hence the advice tot ake one every 4 hrs or so while you are in the air , if you are relaxed and enjoying the flight or asleep obviously you could stretch this out. hope this helps

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 16:26

thankyou so much im just so scared of have a panic attack on the plane and in check out,if i take one 5mg in the nite before i go then when i wake up brake one in half and take that, hopfuly i should feel ok what do they make you feel like your drunk or had a few drinks? i really hate panic attakes and dont want to faint or any thing like that is there any think else i can do? whats the best to do and have to carm the panicsdown?thanks so much for helping mexxx

OP posts:
mummydoc · 29/03/2007 16:36

take a big deep breath right now as you sound quite panicky, i have manged to get loads of patients onto planes and on holidays they never thought they would take , you will be fine , i have never taken them myself but people say it is a bit like a having 3 or 4 gins ( or whatever you drink) but not really drunk, i agree check in can seem a bit overwhelming , so practise lots of deep breathing tecniques and maybe try visulisation exercises , picture yourself on a beach , lying in the warm sun etc and use that picture if you start to panic, plus when you line up to check tell one of the staff going up and odwn the queue how nervous you feel, one of my patients last summer left her DH in the queue and stood outside and he rang her mobile to come in when they were the next to be called to the check in desk , that could help.

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 16:58

im all on my own thats what is really scaring me the most, and im very crosafobic [soz about my spelling]and when im around lots of people who i dont know and there aint any windows around it really freacks me out thats when i have the panic attacks i think im just gonna have to be strong and put up with them but im worried as i will probbley faint?

I was given these for my driving test as I kept failing due to nerves and anxiety (obviously otherwise I drive perfectly). It amused me cause it said on the packet may cause drowsiness and if affected do not drive or operate machinery !

I passed my test, but I know that they said no alcohol (otherwise would be living on them now as they were fantastic )!
