It is impossible for the doctor NOT to have recommended a specific dose of diazepam (valium) or any other "controlled" drug. This dose is clearly printed on the prescription bottle (1 tablet every 6 hours as needed) but these directions were directly copied by the pharmacist from the doctor's prescription order, where dosing details are written in a sort of pseudo-Latin shorthand (1 tab q 6h prn).

In the American system, prescriptions are not just recommendations (as they once were). Since the early 20th century, prescriptions function as legal permits to purchase limited amounts of many popular drugs, thus complicating the normal operation of this market and keeping the prices we (and/or our insurance) must pay for prescription drugs (in the USA) among the highest in the world.

Beta Blockers are good, doesn't mke you feel tired and your heart cannot beat faster cos the drug stops that. Your heart can't beat fast so you feel switched on but no anxiety.

I was given these for my driving test as I kept failing due to nerves and anxiety (obviously otherwise I drive perfectly). It amused me cause it said on the packet may cause drowsiness and if affected do not drive or operate machinery !

I passed my test, but I know that they said no alcohol (otherwise would be living on them now as they were fantastic )!

take a big deep breath right now as you sound quite panicky, i have manged to get loads of patients onto planes and on holidays they never thought they would take , you will be fine , i have never taken them myself but people say it is a bit like a having 3 or 4 gins ( or whatever you drink) but not really drunk, i agree check in can seem a bit overwhelming , so practise lots of deep breathing tecniques and maybe try visulisation exercises , picture yourself on a beach , lying in the warm sun etc and use that picture if you start to panic, plus when you line up to check tell one of the staff going up and odwn the queue how nervous you feel, one of my patients last summer left her DH in the queue and stood outside and he rang her mobile to come in when they were the next to be called to the check in desk , that could help.

lucky you going to the dominican republic ( though am just back from skiing so shouldn't complain) firstly yes diazapan is fine with herbal stuff , second i really wouldn't stay up all night , you will get more and more worked up and then be very tired and the stress of the airport check in etc could well set off a panic attack - not a good start to you holiday ! get to bed normally maybe using a 5mg tablet to help you get to sleep, and then you could try cutting the tblets in half to make 2.5mg ones or ask you doctor for some 2mg ones aswell as 5 mg is quite a hefty dose if you are not used to them, i am suggesting caution with the dose as though you do not want to be panicky you don't want to be really dopey if you have you LOs with you. the tablets effects last 4-6 hrs usually so hence the advice tot ake one every 4 hrs or so while you are in the air , if you are relaxed and enjoying the flight or asleep obviously you could stretch this out. hope this helps

vvvvvvv....i prescribe them for my patients who are nervous of flying and my advice is 2mg tablet on the way to the airport, another on boarding the palne if you start to feel edgy or panicky and then another 3-4 hrs later if still in the air, and then do the same for return trip. If you are getting very worked up i sometimes tell people to have one the night before so that they get some sleep and don't start their holiday tired. THEY will NOT start a panic attack they are in the class of medications used for treating panic attacks .

Not sure if you would need to take it as well. I think most people are prescribed 2mg. So try your 5mg beforhand. I was given some when my back went into spasm. They must have relaxed me because I was in agony before I took them.
