I'm scared! I hate teeth stuff! Got to have 2 cut out on same side under local and I've been warned I will be in pain!
I've got shingles at the moment, luckily a fairly mild case but I'm pretty exhausted as it is especially having 3 kids under 8 all on holiday too :(
It's a good time for me as I get the summer hols off work so I won't need to take time off but I'm dreading it.

Be honest - was it awful? so I can cancel it

I had three out last year under a general and honestly it was fine. My have looked horrific for about a week afterwards as I was pretty bruised as my teeth had very deep roots and I have a tiny mouth to try and prize them out of! But pain wise, nada. I was expecting to lose at least a stone in the process so was most disappointed Wink However, they asked me, as with every general I've ever had, if I was feeling fit and healthy that day. I'm not entirely sure you would go ahead with this when you're already so run down.

MyMorningHasBroken · 30/07/2017 22:46

Thanks Sloane, they said it was also close to the nerve - explained possible complications. I wouldn't mind losing a stone though :) fingers crossed!

I had two out on the same day. They had trouble getting one out so had to break it in half or something, so they kept me in overnight to give me morphine.

I'm not going to lie, i was in pain afterwards. I was very grateful of the morphone injections! I lost a fair bit of weight too. If you are run down I wouldn't do it. It will knock you for six. Can you postpone?

MyMorningHasBroken · 30/07/2017 22:58

Pam, was that under local or general? They told me they might have to break some.

I had bottom 2 taken out, just sedated. Procedure itself absolutely fine. Numbness wearing off later in the day not so fine Grin

Take painkillers before you think you will need them and take maximum amount possible over next few days. Overall best thing I've had done, took away so many issues with jaw and ears.

Hope it goes well!

NachoAddict · 30/07/2017 23:05

I had three out under General last year. In and out the same day with some codeine to take home.
Face was swollen for a few days.
I couldn't eat properly for about 2 weeks which was longer than I expected but mostly because I was freaked out about food going in the holes.
I got dry socket which was horrendous so if you get any pain after the initial couple of days get booked straight in at the dentist and they can pack it for you.

Dontlaugh · 30/07/2017 23:10

I got 4 removed under general in one day, 2 of those were broken into 4 pieces.
I was bruised and sore for a week. Couldn't eat properly for 10 days and lost half a stone. I had no children then but if I'd had I would have had childcare for them.

Delurked · 30/07/2017 23:14

I had one impacted wisdom out under local a few years ago. I found the actual extraction pretty brutal and unpleasant, there was a lot of force involved, but it wasn't actually painful. No real pain afterwards either, had to be careful when eating for a few days though.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 30/07/2017 23:15

I had 2 top wisdom teeth out under local anaesthetic a few years back. One was through properly so came out easily. The other one was mostly still in my gum so they had to cut into my gum it then took them about half an hour to get it out & gum stitched. I think they must use different local to the normal dentist as I stayed numb for hours after. The side with the stitches was very sore for a few days but I got some co-codamol from the pharmacy for the first couple of days then took paracetamol & ibuprofen. I ate lots of soup and soft foods for the first few days as my jaw was quite achy, swollen & a bit bruised and chewing hurt. But by the next week I was eating normally again. It's really important to follow the after care religiously I did and was absolutely fine, but a friend of mine didn't and ended up on antibiotics.

MyMorningHasBroken · 30/07/2017 23:17

Thank you all....The bottom is impacted too Delurked, so they'd cut through the gum and put stitches.
I guess at least if on one side I can kind of eat on the other Grin

I had all four out under GA at the same time.

I had two nights in hospital and I was fine. No swelling or anything.

MyMorningHasBroken · 30/07/2017 23:21

I wonder if the cut off for local is 2 and 3/4 is general Ginger?
Iike yours teenagers - did you have to get stitches removed after?

OP posts:
TeenagersandFurbabies · 30/07/2017 23:26

They used dissolving stitches Morning

MotherofA · 30/07/2017 23:26

I looked scary for a week then mildly scary for another week but it was fine really . Do listen to what they say about food though because if it gets stuck in the wounds it's gross . Don't panic it's really quick .

DividedKingdom · 30/07/2017 23:27

I had 4 out under GA with overnight stay. Bruised up to my forehead but no significant weight-loss Angry. Definitely take things easy for a few days...it's not fun but way better than infected abcessy impacted wisdom teeth so just focus on that Grin.

MyMorningHasBroken · 30/07/2017 23:31

Oh yes divided, I've had so many antibiotics for them in the last 10 years. :(

I look scary anyway Mother, so that won't change much Grin

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth out under GA when I was about 17/18, I also had too many teeth for my mouth. Hurt a bit afterwards but just keep on top of pain relief as often as you can and get someone in to help you with the kids cause you most probably won't be feeling up to it.

MotherofA · 30/07/2017 23:37

Hahaha op Grin

Sallystyle · 31/07/2017 00:05

Do you want honesty?

I had a shit time. Mine were in an awkward position and impacted and they told me they were tough to remove. One bottom one is still there because it was too close to my nerves to remove. They thought I might lose sensation on one side of my tongue and thankfully after the rest were removed I didn't have any more trouble with that one and I had infections often in it before.

Recovery was awful as I got a dry socket and then an infection. I couldn't open my mouth wide enough for them to pack the dry socket or to eat anything solid. It was a few weeks before I could open my mouth comfortably.

I had mine removed under GA. It was worth it though. No more painful infections.

HappyAxolotl · 31/07/2017 00:12

I've had a wisdom out and a stray root after a dentist extraction went wrong. Both were fine. They healed very quickly, I was sent home with some strong painkillers but found I didn't need them after a day. I stuck to soft foods and made sure to do the salt water mouth rinses regularly. No swelling or bruising either.

MyMorningHasBroken · 31/07/2017 04:38

Thanks U2, I did ask for honesty. :( Sorry you had a rubbish time. I'll report back once it's done and compare !
The consultant I saw for consultation last week was lovely and took lots of time explaining everything to me.

PrincipalCelestia · 31/07/2017 08:52

I'm also going to reply honestly as I wished someone had told me what could happen...

I had two out that were impacted under GA.
The recovery was shockingly bad. I was so swollen the Dr thought I said I had been in a car crash when I asked her if this was normal swelling.
I couldn't open my mouth wide enough for proper food for at least 2 weeks.
I was also breastfeeding and I lost a ton of weight. I could only eat ice cream/ready brek/complan with a weaning spoon.

I had no child care arranged. It was awful.

I also had bad nerve damage that has only come back to normal (ish) over 4 years later.

I didn't have a follow up to check it was ok so I had to assume that my recovery was normal. I'm still quite upset by the experience and think about writing and saying that they should warn people that it might be like that.

Having said that, I'm so glad they're out. Nothing's worse than actual toothache.

Don't worry, but...be prepared...
And stock up on the proper post surgery corsodyl (and soft foods/complan just in case!)
Good luckFlowers

Daffodils07 · 31/07/2017 18:14

I was in so much pain before I had my wisdom teeth out that after they were gone I felt fantastic!
I didnt have any problems at all, just dont upset the clot that forms after there out otherwise you can get dry socket.
Good luck and im sure it will go fine.

ParadiseCity · 31/07/2017 18:17

I have had one out under General, home the same day, took me a couple of weeks to recover. One out under local and OMG never a fucking gain. It is beyond brutal. But better than toothache.

Get some Difflam spray and some codeine AND some lactulose. And netflix.

SheepyFun · 31/07/2017 18:30

DH had two on the same side out under GA last year (after a failed attempt under LA). He got a nasty throat infection on about day 3 (possibly due to being intubated for the GA) and refused to go to the doctor about it for about 10 days. Not his best decision - if you're in a lot of pain afterwards, see someone!

DH has had chest issues, and it was borderline as to whether or not he was well enough for the GA - the surgeon thought it would be a no, but the anaesthetist was willing to go ahead. His chest wasn't great afterwards, but we can't predict when he'll be well, so were happy for them to go ahead. Hopefully your dentist will be successful under LA, so you'll be spared this!

Don't expect to be able to care for a child for a couple of weeks.
