I'm scared! I hate teeth stuff! Got to have 2 cut out on same side under local and I've been warned I will be in pain!
I've got shingles at the moment, luckily a fairly mild case but I'm pretty exhausted as it is especially having 3 kids under 8 all on holiday too :(
It's a good time for me as I get the summer hols off work so I won't need to take time off but I'm dreading it.

Be honest - was it awful? so I can cancel it

I had 4 out under general anaesthetic and it was fine. Obviously nicer ways to spend your time but it was so worth it! I was discharged from hospital the same day and was sick on the way home (I'm not great under anaesthetic) but was well enough to see the funny side of throwing up swallowed blood in a country pub's car park 😳 Didn't take long to recover, the prescribed pills controlled the pain well. I was given horror stories before so was dreading it but it was honestly fine. Good luck!

I had mine taken out one by one over the space of about ten years... First one easily removed and no real problems after. Second one, very bruised hamster face and could barely open mouth wide enough for a teaspoon to fit in for a week. Third one horribly unpleasant to remove (drilling into bone, exceptionally unpleasant pulling, pushing and twisting, and stitches) - similar reaction to 2nd one, but sore and swollen for longer. Third one - made my jaw very clicky for over a year afterwards after the pain and swelling had subsided. I am ecstatic they were all eventually removed, especially since my mother had increasing problems with hers as she got older, complicated by the fact she has osteoporosis and apparently the trearment for that can potentially cause huge problems if you need any teeth extracted (risk of something called osteo-necrosis, as well as higher risk of dry socket the older you are) - so better to have them removed when you are younger and fitter than when you are old!!!

Singing you just reminded me, a couple of days later I took DS to the cinema, I was that out of it I threw up into my handbag on the bus and then drifted in and out of consciousness right through the film. Not my best idea but I had never had General Anaesthetic before and didn't realise that it was going to take a few days to leave my system. Luckily DS was 10 so fine to just sit next to me in the cinema, I don't think he even realised I wasn't with it.

HumpHumpWhale · 01/08/2017 12:30

I was grand until I tried to eat solid food too soon, got a pea stuck in the hole in my gum and removed the scab trying to get the pea out. Dry socket and an infection. Don't follow my example. It was a petit pois. Aside from that it really was fine. I had all 4 out. I also was disappointed that I didn't lose more weight!

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 21:59

:( Principal and Paradise, why are they only offering me local if it's this bad? (my bottom one is impacted and close to the nerve, it also has curved roots.
I'm worried now!

I would defo ask for a GA or their reasons for local. I had 4 out under GA. Painful afterwards but no worse than the months of issues leading up to the op. Good luck!

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 22:08

Can I do that Silky? Seems most on here had more than one out under GA. My mum made a face too when I told her. I guess local is cheaper for them?

Icklepickle101 · 01/08/2017 22:12

I had 2 out under GA on and honestly 100% fine. I was home 4 hours after I went in and the next day eating normal but soft food (porridge, sandwich & lasagne). Haven't had pain relief since I've been home, the worst bit has been trying to brush my teeth but a baby toothbrush helped!

Good luck, you'll be fine!

ParadiseCity · 01/08/2017 22:13

I guess local is cheaper to do and no one really wants to sedate someone completely if there is an alternative. Or you might just have a bastard dentist like I did second time. We called him Hatchet Harry (well I did once I could fucking talk again!!!).

Icklepickle101 · 01/08/2017 22:14

Actually I lied, I did take painkillers for the ridiculously painful sore throat from being intubated - this was by far the worst part and would go for a LA if the other 2 have to come out to avoid this!

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 22:17

Thanks Ickle, that's a positive swing on things :)
Haha Paradise!

Watching this thread, as I just found out yesterday that I have to have 3/4 of mine removed (not the fourth as it came into the spot that a previous tooth was removed and has caused no problems). I'm booked for November 10th.

It will apparently be done under an IV line sedation, rather than a general anaesthetic. Dentist assured me that it's not as bad as people say, but. Hmm

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 01/08/2017 22:25

I just had a local anaesthetic and went straight back to workConfused

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 22:26

Good luck Super. We'll survive ....somehow. Grin

SuperBeagle · 01/08/2017 22:27

Should add that mine are "fine" in so far as they are coming in straight and as they should be. The problem is that there isn't much space for them. I wonder if their position will make them easier to remove? Hopeful

MeltingSnowflake · 01/08/2017 22:29

Hello! You'll be fine - I had 4 out at once under general - two were impacted. I went to work the next day and was fine. Don't worry about it!

overduemamma · 01/08/2017 22:29

I had 3 out a few years ago under local. Top 2 were ok my bottom impacted one was awful. I wish I had been put to sleep. 6 injections later and it come out. I looked like I had a stroke when I left the hospital. 2 weeks later I had dry socket. Took a month to get back to normal but I guess mine is worse case x

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 22:34

I think so super, The surgeon I spoke to said that my top one would be fairly easy as it's just 'hanging'? (though still under the gum) but the bottom one which is impacted and has funny roots ect could be quite difficult. I am guessing by these stories it has a lot to do with it and there are different levels of difficulty in getting them out.

OP posts:
serialtester · 01/08/2017 22:34

I had 2 upper ones out under local - fine. 24 hours of discomfort but no issues.

I had 2 lower ones out under local (impacted) it wasn't horrific or anything (god bless dentists!) but it did take a lot out of me and it took me longer to recover. Follow all post extraction care to the letter! You'll be fine.

MyMorningHasBroken · 01/08/2017 22:35

:( Overdue, Why do they do this to us?

OP posts:
overduemamma · 01/08/2017 23:06

I don't know. I'm back at the hospital on the 25th regarding another tooth. Dreading it:( x

Lelleybells · 01/08/2017 23:41

I had all four impacted buggers removed under general. It was fine. I had a little reaction to the anaesthetic and woke up mid op and tried to leave (I have no recollection but according to medical staff it was funny) It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

roundaboutthetown · 02/08/2017 07:52

Bottom wisdom teeth are generally more of a problem to remove than top ones.

Frith1975 · 02/08/2017 11:30

I had a top one out under sedation yesterday.

The worst pain is from an injection hole in my gum! A dull ache as well.

It was through the gum but I'd snapped half off. Came out ok, according to the dentist.

AliciaMayEmory · 02/08/2017 11:39

I had my two left side wisdom teeth out at the same time. I did have sedation as I have a bad gag reflex, so I remember nothing of the procedure, but it was blessed relief that they were out as one was broken and had decayed and was so painful for a couple of months leading up to removal. I had no swelling afterwards and no pain. I did have stitches as something or other happened removing the top tooth and they just put in some dissolvable stitches that were gone within a week. I didn't need any pain relief after the numbness had worn off and could eat relatively normally the next day.

I really hope it goes smoothly for you, OP.
