no experience but would like to know (also had sections and would like coil fitted)

McDreamy · 22/03/2007 13:53

I have 2 sections and had a mirena fitted last September and yes it was painful and yes I required a little local which isn't as bad as it sounds. Went in fine after that and it's the best thing I've ever done (contraception wise )

McDreamy · 22/03/2007 13:54

Happy to answer any other questions you might have

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/03/2007 13:54

i am not sure but i always thought the coil was more for women who had children vaginally. i may be wrong but i thought that was the group they had in mind when designing.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 22/03/2007 13:54

I had the coil fitted after 2 sections
I was told it was probably more painful than if I had had a natural birth as my cervix hadn't been stretched also no one told me to take paracetamol before going for the appointment

McDreamy · 22/03/2007 13:56

Anyone can have the coil insertion is just more difficult with a cervix that hasn't had a baby pushed through it but aside from that it's been great

ScummyMummy · 22/03/2007 13:57

MY twins were born by CS and I have one. The fitting was fine. Felt a bit crampy but certainly no need for anaesthectic or indeed painkillers of any sort.

ScummyMummy · 22/03/2007 13:57

And I am a wuss.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 13:57

had a mirena put in a month ago. It did hurt, and I've had a section and a vaginal delivery. They told me to take painkillers (big strong nurofen!) first. I don't think the local would be too bad though. The whole thing lasted about 1/2 an hour, and I was a bit shaky afterwards (but not as shaky as after birth...!!!). This may be tmi, but doc said it was a bit difficult as my muscles kept trying to push the speculum out (I was quite proud !) They use the same instruments (I think, at least it looked that way) as when you have a smear.

I thought it was worth it not to have to worry about anything for 5 years..

CarGirl · 22/03/2007 13:59

It can be quite painful/tricky if you've never given birth as if you have given birth (vaginally) your cervix never closes fully IYSWIM

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/03/2007 14:02

ive had two babes normal birth and still found it a bit uncomfortable. they put a speculumin the hold the neck of the cervix open with a clamp, then insert the coil. the clamp bit was the bit that hurt. then i had cramping afterwards, quitebad actually for about 30mins, had a lie down and some tablets then was fine.

wurlywurlyCOVEREDinCHOCOLATE · 22/03/2007 14:05

does it hurt more then a smear test??

McDreamy · 22/03/2007 14:06

Yes in my experience it does. Sorry not the answer you want but the local didn't hurt and after that took effect I didn't feel anything!

CarGirl · 22/03/2007 14:06

mine didn't hurt at all but dc4 was only 4 weeks old which I'm sure helped!

WorriedOfDevon · 22/03/2007 14:21

I've had a coil fitted in Jan. I had a CS but had dilated to 4-5cms.

Dr said she was amazed how well I did. - I just lay on the bed, deep breathing with my eyes shut - bit like I did through contractions actually. I did take some strong painkillers first but it was so much better than I thought it would be.

Its so freeing to not worry about contraception for 10 years!! (copper coil) - well, it was until this month when I'm late and still awaiting AF! hey ho!

titchy · 22/03/2007 14:33

Like McDreamy I had one last Sept. after 2 sections. Took some paracetemol before hand and it was a lot easier than I thought. The Dr said it was quite difficult as my cervix was so tight, but TBH can't say I was aware of that at all. Unconfortable yes but not painful. Still spotting abit though - thought after 6 montsh it would have stopped ho hum!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/03/2007 14:36

it gave me those feelings that make you want to 'jump' a bit iykwim?
but agree, deep breathing as if you are having contractions helps. it doesnt take them long though.
my appointment was booked for half an hour but i got there 15 mins late and i was in and out without holding the doc up.

Indith · 22/03/2007 14:43

Oooh like this thread Went to chat to my Dr about mirena yesterday, do not like the sound of the whole clamp thing but more scared by the abstaining from sex for 2 weeks before part!

WorriedOfDevon · 22/03/2007 14:53

yeah - that part is difficult!! - honest I tried! - its just to make sure you aren't pregnant at the time, so i'm sure you'll find some way to deal with that!

Gingermonkey · 22/03/2007 14:53

I've had 2 sections and a coil fitted at my 6 week check after having DS. I didn't feel a thing, and I like to think I don't have some gaping uterine hole!!! . In fact the GP said it may hurt a little but it was no worse than having a smear and felt like she was just poking me down there, not pushing something up.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 14:57

eh? no sex beforehand for 2 weeks? they didn't tell me that bit!! My doc did a pg test before she did the coil insertion.

It isn't the actual insertion that hurts, it's holding the cervix open. It didn't hurt any more than a smear imo, it just went on being uncomfortable for longer. It isn't agonising pain, more like an early labour contraction or braxton hicks.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/03/2007 14:59

i didnt know about the sex bit either. doc just asked me if i was preg or did i have any strange discharge or sign of infection?

Indith · 22/03/2007 15:10

WOD- I know! I mean, I'm bf ds and we use condoms so it can't be that likely that I'd be pg can it? (so says the woman who got pregnant through no less than 2 methods of contraception, hence wanting the mirena). Suppose they want you to abstain so that they can test more accurately in case you are pg.

EdieMcredie · 22/03/2007 17:08

I had it fitted after a termination. Can't comment on the pain as I was under but just to say it's not just women who have had babies that have them fitted.

Having it taken out was no prob and im not the bravest person going!

DANCESwithaTruckLoadOfMiniEggs · 22/03/2007 17:22

I'm a complete wuss and I've had 2 sections and no vaginal deliveries. It was uncomfortable like a smear when they are using the speculum then one quick 'ouch' and it was done. I had a consultant do it though and I think it can be difficult for Drs who are not experienced to do it so make sure you have someone who is experienced! Oh and I took neurofen before too.
