... on a dialysis machine and hooked up to various things keeping her alive . I just don't understand how this can happen. Does anyone know anything about kidneys, dialysis etc.

The birth was quite traumatic, she was induced and then tore quite badly and the baby poohed inside her when he was coming out. She seemed fine though and baby was fine, came home the next day and all was well. Had a call from her husband yesterday to say she had been having terrible sickness and diarrhoea during Tuesday night and kept passing out so he called an ambulance. She's been in intensive care since then.

I'm just so shocked, she is part of my ante-natal group, her elder daughter is six, the same age as mine.

I don't have any answers but how awful!

malaleche · 22/03/2007 10:29

How awful, hope she recovers soon. And what about her poor baby?

sandyballs · 22/03/2007 11:16

The baby is with MIL, other child at school and with friends afterwards. Husband is in a terrible state, obviously. Supposed to be such a happy time with a newborn .

PestoEasterMonster · 22/03/2007 11:17

That's terrible . My thoughts are with you.

Marina · 22/03/2007 11:20

How absolutely dreadful sandyballs, I really hope she makes a full recovery.
Hopefully she is being given abs to counteract what sounds like blood-poisoning .
I really don't know much about this but I think kidneys can fail temporarily due to shock to the system and once the person starts to recover the kidneys will start functioning again.
It has to be in her favour that she was fit and well before this catastrophe.

Aefondkiss · 22/03/2007 11:22

I hope your friend gets better soon

franca70 · 22/03/2007 11:32

sandyballs poor thing . wishing her a speedy recovery, x

sandyballs · 22/03/2007 11:37

If it was blood poisoning or an infection due to the birth wouldn't it have shown up sooner, the baby is over a week old now?

God how scary, your poor friend, and her poor DH. How sad, hope she makes a full and speedy receovery.

foxinsocks · 22/03/2007 11:40

how awful sandy

maybe the infection took a little while to take hold (if it is that)

Marina · 22/03/2007 11:40

If it is C Diff it does not usually put a fit young person on life support - I know, I had it Makes you feel rubbish, but not usually this bad
I thought blood poisoning because of what sounds like a total systemic collapse, the poor woman.
Is she ventilated Sandyballs or breathing unaided?

PeachyClair · 22/03/2007 11:42

Sounds like an infection- only other thing I can think of is postnatal pre-eclmapsia (the nausea etc would equate) but I think he'd know it were that.

So very sorry Sandyballs- I hope that she pulls through.

here

sandyballs · 22/03/2007 11:46

It does sound like blood poisoning - possibly streptococcal septicaemia which was "child bed fever" in the old days. It's rare, I saw a case once and the woman was very sick on ITU but made a full recovery - the fact your friend is young & fit is on her side. My DH works in ITU and virtually all the young fit people who end up there do well, I could ask him any specific questions if you like although he's on call tonight & won't be home till tomorrow.

fussymummy · 22/03/2007 12:23

How awful for your friend, don't have any advice i'm afraid, but couldn't not post, to say i hope she pulls through this awful ordeal
