It hurts quite a lot so I just dose up on painkillers - now though I cant get rid of the pain even though ive max doses myself on lots of different things

the pain is searing through my head, jaw, ears and face - it feels like the nerve is totally raw, keeps shooting through my head

what can I do? i cant take much more but Im soooooo sooooo scared

DS and DD both asleep in bed - I wouldnt want to go on my own so I think I need to try and get through the night, DP has to go into work in the morning but is going to try and come home at lunch to take me in the afternoon....

Do I ring my normal dentist or go to the dental hospital

omg you poor thing, it is complete agony

the only things that helped me while i waited to see a dentist were aspirin (paracetamol didn't seem to touch it) and warm salt water mouthwashes (they REALLY helped)

Check the active ingredients to make sure you don't take too many paracetamol etc

Ring dentist first thing and they'll probably have an emergency appt. Make sure they know it really is an emergency!

Becca - if you call NHS Direct they should be able to give you details of out of hours dentist services - you might be able to get it seen too tonight.

definitely ring nhs direct or look in the yellow pages for a 24 hour dental emergency service before going to A&E

Becca, you've gone offline and I'm hoping you've gone to A&E or called your GP. The diclofenac (volterol) is the same type of drug as the ibuprofen. If you are still there and haven't gone, please at least ring and tell whoever you speak to that you've been feeling dizzy and anxious since taking the volterol. xxxx

Hope you get some sleep at least Becca, or that you've gone for help if you're offline. If feeling funny after volterol, get advice over phone from NHS Direct at least. They'll call you back quick if you've taken too many tabs, and advise you what to do next, or if it's ok to wait until morning.

Becca, first, tonight's problem . If I have read this right you have a dentist ? ( you mentioned ringing your "normal " dentist)
If it's an NHS dentist they should have an ansaphone message on right now giving advice on what to do in an emergency.

Have you tried holding a mouthful of water over the tooth? Try water at different temperatures. Advanced nerve pain sometimes is relieved by very cold water; some find hot water does the trick.

You could turn up at A & E and they will probably prescribe you two different antibiotics to take together which will indirectly ease the pain.(Hospitals seem to favour the combination of amoxycillin and metronidazole)

For the ongoing problem: as long as you are healthy and not pregnant, consider getting the tooth out under intravenous sedation. You get an injection in your arm and feel very calm and floaty for the whole procedure, and very probably won't remember much about it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Becca - how are you this morning? Hope your night wasn't too long and painful.

Beccarollover · 11/07/2004 10:31

Hello

Well Im still here to tell the tale - alot of the night was pretty horrendous, with me in tears, swilling water round my mouth, vodka round my mouth, biting on pillows etc etc but it did die off early this morning after I was allowed more paracetamol and I got a bit of sleep - Im just getting the kids ready now then DP is taking me to the dental hospital that has an emergency department.

Thank you so much for all of these messages, sorry I dissappeared last night I couldnt bear it any more and had to lie down.

Jasper - thank you - I do have a "normal" dentist but they unregister you after so long of non contact so Im no longer on their books now.

Someone further up mentioned that its the shame of leaving it so long that stopped them getting it seen to and thats how Im feeling this morning - really embarassed that I have to go and get it sorted and try and explain why I let it get so bad I have only got half a tooth.

Jasper - getting the tooth out by IV sedation - is that something the hospital might be able to do? Or will I have to find a dentist that will do it? Is it going to cost us a fortune? (I have a baby under 1!)

Morning Becca
None of your dental treatment should cost you a penny if you have a baby under a year.
Also, don't worry about not having been for so long. My brother is of the mind that 'if it ain't broken, why fix it?'. He's not at all afraid, just doesn't see the point of paying out money he can't easily afford every six months for someone to tell him things are fine, or to fix something that isn't bothering him. Personally, I go every year or so and take the kids for a check-up so they have no fear at all of going. I used to be very frightened after a huge extraction of four back teeth at age six. Next visit, I refused point blank to open my mouth. My Mum was mortified, but soon solved the problem by finding us a really lovely and extremely gentle dentist. I can honestly say that while I was treated by him, I never felt any pain and also never even felt any injections he administered. Of course, I left home many years ago, but he pretty much cured my fear, which is why finding a good one is so important.
Hope it went/goes well this morning>

becca I missed this yesterday, poor you I have had this it is hell on earth isn't it?

FWIW I had a root canal under sedation (which was lovely). I would go for it. You feel all nice + you don't feel any pain.

Don't think the NHS pay for it though

Beccarollover · 11/07/2004 17:09

Im back - the tooth is gone bar a small part of the root that had become detached and at that point I couldnt take any more - he said its very unlikely to cause a problem but if it did to go back.

I had the option to save the tooth by having the pulp from the tooth taken out then root canal work then rebuilding the tooth but I opted for it out as I just knew I wouldnt go back for another appointment for the work to be carried out and just wanted an end to the pain - now I have seen the ugly, horrible gap in my smile Im very upset I didnt go for saving the tooth but I literally just wanted it out of me by the time I was seen.

The extraction was pretty horrendous but thankfully DP came with me and I just clawed his hands and tried to breathe until it was over.

Have a really attractive swollen face and blood dribbling down my chin as the anaesthetic hasnt worn off yet so cant feel my mouth!! Nice image

I have to make an appointment with a dentist to see about implants (3k plus) or a bridge to close the gap - I hope to god they look ok I really am devastated at the gap it has left, I look very common

Thanks to all of the replies on here, you all gave me the courage to go today and even though it was really horrible that AWFUL pain has now gone.

Hi Becca, glad to hear the problem is now sorted.

Don't know how old your baby is but as long as you start a new course of treatment before your baby is one year old all your treatment is free for the course. Even if you go the day before his or her birthday and your treatment lasts for six months.

Make sure you visit an NHS dentist before your baby's first birthday to ask to go on their books and for a bridge. Make sure they realise you have a baby under one and you would like the bridge under this course so you don't have to pay.

The only thing about having a bridge is that you really need to go for regular treatment after it is done. Neglecting it will end up with 2 more unhappy teeth and gums either side of the gap.

HTH.

Thanks for that information SHR - I certainly intend never to neglect my teeth!

Quick question - i think the tooth next to the one that was removed is bleeding as well as the wound, I felt like it was knocked when they were pulling - this one isnt going to come out is it!!??
