Im in total agony, i have a rotten tooth that ive been so scared to get seen to due to phobia of dentist it is now an emergency

It hurts quite a lot so I just dose up on painkillers - now though I cant get rid of the pain even though ive max doses myself on lots of different things

the pain is searing through my head, jaw, ears and face - it feels like the nerve is totally raw, keeps shooting through my head

what can I do? i cant take much more but Im soooooo sooooo scared

Are any dentists around?

As an update to this - Im getting married in 6 weeks and starting to get VERY paranoid about the gap in my smile.

Would I be able to get a partial denture or something? Ive learnt to live with the gap in everyday life but Im starting to really panic about the photographs and my confidence on my wedding day - I want to be able to smile without worrying!

Is there time to get something arranged?

How much is it likely to cost?

Hiya I'm glad it went well - I've just paid for 5 sessions of hypnotherapy to overcome my fear of dentists

It cost a fortune but I had a checkup and scale & polich and a filling - without any tears (or panic attacks or me killing the dentist)

Good luck with the rest (and think of me I'm having 6 teeth crowned)

Oh, Becca, I'm so pleased your dentist was so much better today - and that he's referred you. That must be a real weight off your mind now.

Hiya

Well, I lived to tell the tale - was verrrrrrrry nervous when I got there and bless DP he redeemed himself and explained the state I had been getting myself into - the dentist was lovely, MUCH better than last time and really explained everything and took his time - he didnt do the root filling he did a small filling in one of my bottom teeth which was slightly more bearable - I was still climbing the walls when he was using the big drill so he referred me for sedation for the rest of my treatment.

I AM SO RELIEVED!! I really feel like a weight has been lifted.

Thank you for all your kind thoughts earlier!

Becca, how did it go? How are you feeling now?

I've had a root filling and it was absolutley a-ok and fine. No worries! Reading the rest of this thread I thought I'd let you know that DICLOFENAC is a type of anti-inflamatory that you take for joint type injuries and arthiritis etc. It's not a pain killer and isn't like brufen, it has to build up in your system and you take it regularly! Remove it from your emergency stash you naughty girl!

They're on their way, ks. Sending you lots of positive, calming thoughts, Becca. Hope it goes OK.

Men are like that, Becca! You could always take your mind of what the dentist is doing by thinking up loads of cruel and unusual punishments for him .

I was trying to think of anything last time to distract myself........will give sex a go this time!

DP has taken day off to come and hold my hand.

I just had a cry on him and he said "it wont be as bad as you think"

Helpful.Not.

Oh, poor you - if he's not sympathetic that makes things seem much worse. My old dentist was lovely and so patient, but my new one isn't as sympathetic and I think that's one of the reasons I get so wound up. The only thing I can say is, try to relax and breathe slowly and deeply, and tell yourself it'll all be over really soon. Even if you can't have sedation today, please ask about sedation, referral or Valium for your future appointments.

Hope it all goes OK, let us know.

My appointment is in half an hour so not much chance of that.

I have another 3 sessions of fillings then need to get a bridge fitted - (god I sound attractive lol)

I dont think my dentist offers sedation even if your willing to pay but I think I will beg to be referred.

He is pleasant enough but not very sympathetic at all so not sure if I will get much joy.

I have a terrible fear of dentists too, so I really sympathise with you Becca. Most NHS dentists don't offer intravenous sedation unless you pay for it, although if you have a dental hospital near you they will refer you and you can have the sedation on the NHS. What your dentist should be able to do, however, is give you a prescription for a low-dose Valium tablet to take half an hour before treatment. If he won't, you can see your doctor and he will prescribe for you. Mine did that for me and it really helped me.

If your appointment is today you won't have time to do this, I wonder if you rang them first they would be able to make you out a prescription that you could pick up earlier? I hope it all goes OK.

The filling I had done a fortnight ago was with lots of aneasthetic injected and I couldnt feel a thing - its that big drill that feels like your skull will cave in - I simply cant bear it, I could be sick thinking about it - I felt so, so terrible last time like I really could die! Its bloody pathetic really but I would MUCH rather give birth.

Im thinking about begging him to refer me to be sedated and get the whole lot done as I feel ill between appointments worrying about it!

Just reviving this thread - Im now well on my way of my course of treatment and being very brave and going regularly for all the fillings I need done.

Today I have an appointment for a root filling - Im so scared - the last filling I had (2 weeks ago) I thought whilst it was happening that I could never go back as it was so horrendously bad - please tell me a root filling wont be as bad as having a very big filling in one of my back teeth?

I really want my mouth sorting out as the neglect has taken its toll so I need a few things doing but I just cant bare it again - I dont think my dentist offers sedation and if I went elsewhere I think I would have to pay wouldnt I?

Can I just point out I didnt realise the painkllers were aspirin in case you think Im mental! They were extra power pain relief tablets for dental pain, headaches etc - didnt check the ingredients til this morning!

I think I might have worked out the bleeding problem....

I have been taking aspirin as pain relief since getting it out - would this cause it to bleed lots and not clot properly? DOH

Also - Jasper, anyone with experience.....
What is the best thing to go for bridge or implant?

Im really not sure how we would pay for an implant but I would try and raise the money if it is alot better than a bridge...

Any thoughts?

Thanks for that information SHR - I certainly intend never to neglect my teeth!

Quick question - i think the tooth next to the one that was removed is bleeding as well as the wound, I felt like it was knocked when they were pulling - this one isnt going to come out is it!!??
