Advice needed- dd "bits" smell

I am very embarrassed about this, but here goes.
DD is 14months old, and sometimes her bits smell when I remove her nappy. She has a bath everynight, and is washed down there on a morning. But there is still a smell, not hugely unpleasent but not nice either

Do you think I should be doing anything else to clean her? Should I be getting into all her nooks and crannies?
She does object when I try to clean her labia.

I am wary of using harsh soaps, as I know they can unbalance her natural bacteria down there, which may lead to her getting infections.

Please give me some advice.

you needn't wash a girls labia
or use harsh soaps ( I know you don't )
could she maybe have a urine infection or thrush?

lulumama · 19/03/2007 19:53

I have a DD, and the only aroma i notice, is if she has just recently weed as i change her nappy....are you sure that is not what you can detect?

i would not be cleaning her labia, just general wiping and a splash in the bath should do it

might she have a little infection? thrush?

I don't have girls, but had prob with DS when he was first born even though he was washed properly, wet wiped etc and it turned out to be the creases in his legs - he got really hot there and it made him sweat so had to pay particular attention to that and its fine now.

You could try Avent liquid talc - that is ok for use on babies and will dry smooth and stop the creases from getting sweaty. I would also mention to HV just in case maybe an infection.

Don't think you are disgusting at all - just a concerned, conscientious mum!

snowing · 19/03/2007 19:58

Could be the sweating in her creases. never thought abou that. I could use talc, but I am sure I read somewhere that it could be a potential cause for female cancers, hence my reluctance to use it "down there"

Thats why I suggested Liquid Talc by Avent - its not a powder - its a liquid cream, that dries smooth and works like a talc, but without all the particle bits, which as far as I am aware, are the cause of cancers, asthma etc as they are floating around etc... if you feel really uncomfortable about using it, could use some baby lotion. I'm pretty sure its the leg creases - they can get soooo hot with the nappy on all day etc.

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 20:01

I was going to suggest thrush too.
IME the nappy area gets smelly depending on what they eat too. Fish is an obvious example. Otherwise there are certain foods which make your wee smell so any trapped residue within the nappy is going to honk a little.

Sorry to be revolting but why not have a good old sniff of your own fanny or your knickers to see how fragrant you are because we tend to get closer to our dd's bits than we do our own. How often are you in sniffing distance of your own?

snowing · 19/03/2007 20:01

Thanks nicki, that is great advice, I will try that . thank you

Spidermama - pmsl at thought of mnetters sniffing their knickers!!

luciemule · 19/03/2007 20:04

If it's her creases, after her bath just dry really well and don't over dress her (I never used talc on DD either). I'd have thought if she has a bath at night, a nappy change first thing in the morning with wipes/water should be fine.

snowing · 19/03/2007 20:06

Lucie- do you think maybe its cos she has, vest, tights trousers etc that may be making her sweat?

Still laughin at smelling fanny!!!!!!!!!!

snowing I think this is normal for some girls

I asked my GP about this and he said that some girls smell more than others and not to worry unless there was signs of infection

You don't need to get in nooks and crannies - unless she is in the habit of hiding sweetcorn up there - just a bath is enough and maybe a quick wipe with a wet flannel in the morning - but no need to part labia or anything like that.
