I'v just come back from the hospital after having a ECG scan and various other tests and it came back to say I have Cyadide Poisoning. The Dr said any more and I would be dead!

I only used a flea treatment on my dog!

Does anyone know anything about cyanide?

I know it takes 3 years to leave the atmosphere!

hillary - get your mum to hunt it out NOW do not risk loosing your evidence, make sure she is wearing gloves an dif you have one kicking round a face mask, or put a scarf over mouth and then place it in a air tight ub of some description. you may well need this to prove you poisoning case

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:46

Yes I will,(my mum turned her nose up but if she doesn't I'l have a go)

Anybody want a georgeous jack russell puppy one vaccine to go (all paid for)

katzg · 18/03/2007 20:47

you should be able to keep him, there are plenty of other flea treatments out there, we uses frontline, which we did about once a year on our very fluffy dog and she never got fleas.

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:52

My mum says you shouldn't use flea prevention just treat it if it happens.. Perhaps I'm being irresponsible having a dog. We all love him though & My mum's banished him to the garden (he's only 8 weeks old)

tissy · 19/03/2007 08:40

according to the Bayer website, cyanide is a thermal decomposition product of Advocate, and there shouldn't be any need to take precautions such as ventilation in normal use.

Make sure you keep the packaging, if it can be retrieved, as there may have been a problem with manufacture/ storage. Don't think you can categorically blame the vet at this stage.

hillary · 19/03/2007 08:45

Good morning tizzy, I do blame the vet for not advising me as to what was in the drug as he perscribed it and he insisted I used it.

The fax I received stated all the health warnings for the people handling the drug their end, eg; industrial overalls and full face mask... whats the difference from their end to this .. its the same product after all, not saying everyone's going to be affected by it but for those who are a warning would be nice. It was enough to do me damage, gotta be something done

OP posts:
tissy · 19/03/2007 08:51

this is the info I was talking about

all I meant was that cyanide is a decomposition product. The stuff doesn't contain cyanide in its active form (or shouldn't), so it seems that something has happened during manufacture or storage.

I think the difference is that you had a minute amount, apparently packaged appropriately, so things should have been alright. Something went wrong somewhere, I'm just not sure the vet is to blame.

tissy · 19/03/2007 08:53

see p 4, sections 7 and 8 "normal use"

LowFatMilkshake · 19/03/2007 09:14

HIlary I ahev just read this thread and think what you have nben through is inexcusable! You seem to be being let down on all fronts!

Phone the local council and speak to the environmental health dept - they should take this case for you.

Also phone the PDSA or RSPCA and ask for some help explain what has happened and that you need someone to look after your puppy for a while until he is clear of the chemical (4 weeks I belive you were told). They should be able to help, especialy the PDSA who provide treatments for free and discounted rates.

Make it clear to all of them how desperate this situation is. Single mum, trouble breathing, 2 young children etc etc.

Let us know what the council says if you get a chance.

Thinkning of you - feel better soon!

Whoooosh · 19/03/2007 10:11

Hillary this is awful but can I just say that the garden,in this weather is no place for an eight week old puppy.Do you not have any friends who could take him in?

Whereabouts are you?

Any Mumsnetters who could foster him-I will if nearby although my three cats will hate me....

SoupDragon · 19/03/2007 10:43

"whats the difference from their end to this" They're handling large quanities of it day in day out. In theory, you're handling one tiny tube once per month. I don't think it's the vet's fault at all. The product is in regular use, has no safety contraindications and was prescribed/used as per the directions. The fault lies with the manufacturer for either inaccurate labelling or a faulty batch.

Out cats used to get regular flea vaccinations at the vet (Program? or something) Stopped the life cycle of the flea so they could never take hold. I think it was 2 jabs per year.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2007 10:43

How are you feeling today??

Whoooosh · 19/03/2007 12:10

Bump

hillary · 19/03/2007 12:10

Sorry SD, didn't realise what I said about their end or this, just thought of the exposure and how idiotic it is not to mention its toxic, not really with it tbh

Woooooooooosh how sweet of you, my mum's been having a go at me saying I'm irresponsible and selfish getting a pup. I honestly thoutht it would be good for the dd's (which so far has been until now & its hardly the pups fault if anything its mine for using it) My dd1 was terrified of dogs and absouloutly adores him and dd2 sings her heart out & declairs her love to him constantly I walk alot & am also lonely, don't have a dp/dh or social life so thought him as a companion IYKWIM

I really don't want to get rid of him

I know nobody, I'm so angry its ruining our bonds too my mum told my dd1 the pup would bite her so she now screams everytime the kitchen door is opened. (Cheers mum)

Do you think I'm being selfish?

I have an appointment to see my solicitor today at 2.30pm.

The info Tissy's link shows on P1 says it's "harmful by inhalation" and also claims that risk & safety labels are not needed on the pack but should be on the producct label??

I think it's the fact that you were in an enclosed room with the treated pup blowing up balloons that's caused this - lots of inhaling in a confined space. This isn't to say it's your fault - the labelling should have been very clear about ventilation.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2007 12:32

But on P4 it claims no ventilation req'd for normal use but "do not inhale vapour" There's something not right at all isn't there?! If you shouldn't inhale the vapour, you should use it in a ventilated area surely?? What cr*p advice!

Whoooosh · 19/03/2007 12:34

I don't think you are irresponsible or selfish getting a pup-I am in no position to judge.
It is however cruel to lock an 8wk old pup outside for no reason he understands in this kind of weather.

Maybe your vets (another one) could recommend a foster carer until the danger for you has passed.

My offer still stands.

hillary · 19/03/2007 12:40

Oh bless you, he's in my kitchen, I wouldn't keep him outside, he does spend time out there but I'm not that curel, my mother can just fester in the corner.

You're probably far away from me... I'm in essex - he does love our giant bunny though - great friends

All the advice contridicts each other - what are you supposed to believe? its crazy there's nothing on the packet or instructions/lableling etc to say what about those who don't have access to the internet who rely soley on the packaging.

Madness.

thehairybabysmum · 19/03/2007 13:03

You need to report this to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate

adverse reactions

they are the body that licenses animal medicines and take reorted adverse reactions into acount when assessing products. They should investigate for you, the company who makes the stuff are by law required to report adverse effects so shouldnt have fobbed you off, especially as you have blood test results.

Hope you are feeling better today.

Bucketsofdynomite · 19/03/2007 13:28

Is there a UseBy date on the packaging?

mrsjohnsim · 19/03/2007 16:43

agreewith hairybaby'sbum. was trying to post this to you last night, but dh was trying to talk to me.
I don't suppose your vet would be aware of the degradation product, he would prescribe it as per the manufactureres instructions.
I think tissy's link shows information for the manufacturers, not for domestic use.

I think that is is very worrying that Bayer have tried to deny the problem and i think you should go back to them and discuss how they can help you out as far as getting somebody to look after the puppy for you.

I hope you are feeling better today, and i don't think you arewrong for getting a puppy, this has just been a really terrible thing to happen, but not really the norm when it comes to normal dog ownership.

mrsjohnsim · 19/03/2007 16:44

sorry, hairybabysmum!!!!

GRUMPYGIRL · 19/03/2007 16:49

I think you will find lots of aerosols have dangerous (potentially harmful) chemicals in - thats why it says on the tin "do not use in an enclosed space, or use in a well ventilated room" That means one of 2 things 1. it will harm you if inhaled

  1. it will blow your house up if theres a spark

So best to open the window!

I hope you feel better soon.

GRUMPYGIRL · 19/03/2007 16:50

The vet should have pointed out the dangers though.
