I'v just come back from the hospital after having a ECG scan and various other tests and it came back to say I have Cyadide Poisoning. The Dr said any more and I would be dead!

I only used a flea treatment on my dog!

Does anyone know anything about cyanide?

I know it takes 3 years to leave the atmosphere!

Blandmum · 18/03/2007 19:56

you can get it from eating tapioca roots (note not the pudding) as well.

mrsjohnsim · 18/03/2007 19:56

How did yopu get a list of the contents?
I am stunned that Advocate contains cyanide!

hillary · 18/03/2007 19:57

I only used one tube as it says, ordianry advocate spot on flea treatment as you or I would get from the vet.

We are a totally organic household so there's no other chemicals in the house, I had to pin the pup down to get it on his back in 3 places as said on instructions, that was it! I smelt a funny smell I said it smelt of diesel or something but been told its almond (we are nut allergic so wouldn't know)

I stayed in the enclosed room with the pup getting the kitchen ready for my dd2's first birthday, blowin up baloons etc. didn't go to bed until 1.30am.

I'm a small framed person, I don't know! Its crazy!

from wikipedia - cyanide has an almond smell

mrsjohnsim · 18/03/2007 20:00

I am still not sure re the contents, how did you get the list- i really didn't know this ...
and I do hope you feel better soon.
How did they diagnoses cyanide poisoning too? did they take blood tests?
that is truly frightening for you x

tinkerbellhadpiles · 18/03/2007 20:01

Oh bloody hell. You poor thing.

Right some better news: IF you are still walking around and talking, chances are you will be fine. It's really unlikely you'll have long term damage but you are going to feel like crap for quite a while I'm afraid.

BUT it is EXCEPTIONALLY IMPORTANT that you keep away from the dog. I know that sounds horrible but he will be carrying it round (surprising the dog hasn't reacted).

WHEN you are better, you should report this bloody vet to www.rcvs.org.uk/HomePage.asp?NodeID=89614 (Royal College of Vetinary Surgeons) and get his licence revoked. Personally I'd also be consulting a lawyer and claiming for a professional decontamination job!

This is so awful, how horrid for you.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2007 20:01

I guess it was the enclosed room and the vast amount of inhaling involved in blowing up balloons. Mad. Did the instructions say nothing about well ventilated area??? I'd say it's more the manufacturers error in labelling than the vet's for prescribing it.

lulumama · 18/03/2007 20:02

peach stones contain it too !!!

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:03

I phoned the vet who phoned the manufacturer who faxed me a copy of the ingredients and safety recommendations etc. Took all that to the hospital and they explained it all to me.

No nobody at home but me & my dd's (my mum's her at the moment as I cant do a thing) but she needs to go home in the morning

Yes My GP's surgery is total Crap! he gave me piriton! and told me I was waisting his time! Last time I went there it was for my dd who had a rash I was told I was an over reactive mother (even though My dd2 had septiacemia) turned out it was another allergy which needed treatment(I took her to bupa)

SoupDragon · 18/03/2007 20:03

Apple seeds as well.

lulumama · 18/03/2007 20:05

you need a new doctor , hillary...

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:08

No it said nothing about ventalation at all, all precautions were for the animal, it said in very rare cases the handler may get a slight rash if it touched their skin but only in extreamly rare cases!

There's cyanide in it FFS!

Look up Advocate spot on you'l find noting about safety!

Certainly wouldn't use it! Children or not!

Bucketsofdynomite · 18/03/2007 20:11

She got better quite quickly but then the smoke had been outside. Hopefully you'll feel better after a good night's sleep (in your woollies with the window open).

mrsjohnsim · 18/03/2007 20:14

Have you spoken with the drug company? I think you need to talk to them and have it logged with them to be honest.
Advocate is a drug that has passed all the licensing tests etc by the relevant authorities so it isn't really down to the vet, they have prescribed you something that has been deemed safe-they haven't prescribed anything that is not allowed per se.

It is a terrible thing to happen, however and Iyou must report it as an adverse reaction to a drug- there will be a procedure and a form- ask your vet.

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:23

Hi MrsJohnsmum,

Yes I have spoken to the drug company, she wouldn't hear of it and said I was comming down with a virus.

It has been passed as safe but obviously its not as safe as they are lead to believe. I will log it with the drug officials, but they really should have usage guidelines with regards to ventailation etc.

Makes me so cross

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/03/2007 20:23

Oh god thats awful!!!!

Hillary, I think you need some help - is there no-one close by?

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:25

No

Just have to get through it. My mum says I have to get rid of the puppy.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 18/03/2007 20:26

are you sure it's from that stuff (I mean, are the hospital sure it is?)

I'm just wondering whether there's anything else you could have been exposed to

foxinsocks · 18/03/2007 20:26

sounds very frightening hillary - poor you

Beauregard · 18/03/2007 20:28

OMG
I cannot believe you were sold this stuff.

hillary · 18/03/2007 20:29

Yes its def the flea treatment, I don't have chemicals in my house and the hospital did a blood test and urine test which both came back possitive. The chemicals matched those in the ingredients

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 18/03/2007 20:31

hillary!

I agree that you need to have it logged as a reaction. I wonder if it is worth calling the poisons centre (or did the hospital do that)? - maybe they could give you more advice (if you need it)

I mean, that stuff is pretty widely prescribed by vets isn't it?

can you not persuade your mum to stay a bit longer till you feel better?

katzg · 18/03/2007 20:32

hillary - have you kept the tube it came in? it possible that this one is faulty and had an excess of cyanide in it, you would need the end of the tube to test to prove it, also could be a whole batch, drug company should be taking this very seriously.

DrMarthaMcMoo · 18/03/2007 20:35

Dh has been reading over my shoulder and he says there are antidotes though - one of them is amyl nitrate (ie., 'poppers') If you google cyanide antidote you'll find more information.

Rest and call an ambulance if you can't breathe (and the fact that they told you there isn't an antidote) sounds like the hospital are pretty clueless, tbh. Don't really know what to advise but maybe you could go back to the hospital armed with some more information?

They shouldn't be selling this stuff for domestic use.
