Dd fractured her wrist today and I was told she needs this every 4 hours for week.

Just wondered if I could get it from doctors as this will cost a lot.

you can get paracetamol suspension fromt he doctor's. Don't think it's branded though

lulumama · 15/03/2007 12:45

pretty sure you can , did you not get a prescription from the hospital for painkillers?

emmatomATO · 15/03/2007 12:46

Yes, and you can get non-branded neurofen on prescription too.

AnAngelWithin · 15/03/2007 12:47

yes they will prescribe the basic 'make' for you. Not specifically calpol though.

Enid · 15/03/2007 12:49

remember supermarket own brands are v cheap compared to brands

35p for a pakc of ibuprofen

Enid · 15/03/2007 12:50

oh sorry its for your dd

yes I got calpol on prescription from the hospital once

princessmel · 15/03/2007 12:50

Lulu, no we didn't.

What should I do?

my ds get calpol and also nurofen (chemists own brands) on prescription as he get migraines and has to have these regularly. Take her to see the doc and say shes in a lot of pain.

princessmel · 15/03/2007 12:55

Can't really say that she's in pain as I was told at hospital to give regular 4 hourly medicine. So she shouldn't be iykwim.

I don't want to ring the docs up again but last time I said 'calpol' and 'neurofen'. Maybe I should have said paracetamol and ibuprofen(sp). damn.

lulumama · 15/03/2007 12:56

odd...you are usually discharged from a&e with the meds you need or a prescription for the hospital pharmacy.....sounds like an oversight.,.call the hospital back?

also, i recall getting free calpol from the care at the chemist scheme when dd had a cold....

raspberryberet · 15/03/2007 12:57

Ring back and ask to speak to the GP, not the receptionist. You CAN get paracetamol and ibuprofen on prescription - the GP may be prepared to write one for you without seeing dd, seeing as she's been treated at the hospital.

LoveMyGirls · 15/03/2007 13:00

Where i live you can go to pharmacy and get the equilvalents for free, it's called the minor aliements scheme - you can use it for teething etc so worth a try?

princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:01

Just rang the health visitors office and spoke to what sounded like a teenage boy. 'He' said 'no' aswell.

He said 'its probably easier to go and buy it' then said 'don't know what else to say, you'll have to but it'

I'm cross now. No answer from hospital at the moment.

OP posts:
lulumama · 15/03/2007 13:03

not easier to buy it when you should get it free !! ailments scheme must be the same as care at the chemist ! speak to GP if can;t get thorugh to hospital

ludicrous to be discharge and told need pain meds and expect you to buy them !

princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:03

Hospital are saying I should buy it too. I'm on hold.

tissy · 15/03/2007 13:04

Hang On!

Check with the hospital! How old is your dd?

She shouldn't be NEEDING painkillers that frequently for very long, no more than a few days at the most.Every 4 hours is a maximum dose, not compulsory, and you MUST make sure you don't go over the daily maximum. If your dd is sleeping comfortably at night, please don't waker her every 4 hours for more painkiller!

Did the wrist require manipulation under anaesthetic, or an operation, or was your daughter just seen and treated in A+E?

The doctors receptionist is WRONG, you can get it on prescription for a child, but you shouldn't need more than a bottle, so it wouldn't cost a fortune.

You don't have to buy branded Calpol, either, if you ask a pharmacist for paracetamol, and give the age of the child, they can dispense a much cheaper variety.

tissy · 15/03/2007 13:06

sorry, see you are checking

hospitals usually only dispense enough painkiller for a few days, and expect you to get hold of more, either over the counter or on prescription.

princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:07

She is 19m. I wouldn't wake her at night if she was asleep happy.

The hospital said they didn't give me one because I didn't ask. But i can have one and could have been given one if I'd asked then.

I need to call the GP back. I don't know why I'm nervous about doing that.

The doctor at the hospital examined it and she had 2 x rays.

OP posts:
tissy · 15/03/2007 13:10

OK, so Xrays and a cast...

she will probably only need a dose or two of paracetamol before she's completely fine again; whoever told you every 4 hours for a week was talking out of his/ her a**e

Toddlers heal fractures VERY quickly.

princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:12

No cast.

Nothing actually. They didn't have any splints small enough and they said she didn't need plaster and 'babies her age don't tollerate bandages very well'.

Ok, shall I not bother? I just feel we should get what we are entitled to. And I'm annoyed at the receptionist and the boy/women in the HV office.

wotzsaname · 15/03/2007 13:17

princessmel - my local chemist has a list of meds they can give children for FREE. You have to register at chemist and provide GP details, but it means that for pain relief etc you dont; have to see GP and its free. You don't even need to take the child with you.

hunkermunker · 15/03/2007 13:18

How bad is the fracture? No cast or support of any sort sounds odd?

Poor little girl - hope she heals quickly.

princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:20

Whats that called?? Is it the same as the minor ailments scheme mentioned by some of the others?

Shall I ring the pharmacy and ask?

OP posts:
princessmel · 15/03/2007 13:21

Its called a greenstick fracture which is not serious apparantly. They said she will be in pain. She can't really use that hand/arm.

OP posts:
wotzsaname · 15/03/2007 13:21

princessmel - not sure what it is called, but yes you could ring local chemist and ask.
