Breast Lump Referral

ilovechocolates · 12/05/2017 21:42

Found breast lump, pea-sized, saw GP, been referred to breast clinic.
What happens there?
Scared cos thinking it could be cancer.
Anyone else been in this position? Got words of advice?

Sorry to hear that Reero. It is very hard and I agree being told not to worry might be well meant but it's not very helpful. I really don't think you can help but worry, especially if you have dependent children.

Try to go for a brisk walk every day and to keep busy. It might be a good time to clear out wardrobes and cupboards - something that doesn't require that much mental effort but will help tire you out so you can sleep.

Remember most breast lumps are harmless and most that aren't are treatable. And most that can't be cured can be slowed down for years. You've done the right thing by making an appointment to get this checked. The very worst thing anyone can do is to ignore a possible symptom.

I hope the time goes quickly for you and it is good news. Flowers

Hi rerro I'm in the same boat, found a lump 3 weeks ago breast clinic on thursday.
Most of the time I'm ok, but waves of anxiety wash over me. I've been in tears today
I've stayed away from Google as much as possible, but it doesn't help.
Trying to stay positive as I have a 13 year old dd and my hubbie is poorly, god knows what it would do to my mum, but it's hard. I haven't told any of my close friends, I don't feel as if I can until I have something to report. It's all crap however you look at it

ilovechocolates · 16/05/2017 22:59

Yh I've not told anyone except my husband and a few colleagues (work as healthcare professionals) and my best friend. Don't feel it's fair to worry them, altho if the worst does happen, then it'll be more of a shock so I'm not sure what to do for the best tbh

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 19/05/2017 20:15

Oh, thanks such good news. Thank you for coming back to let us know

SummerRains · 19/05/2017 20:33

That is such great news. I could have posted the same post as you - from when I found my lump and seeing the Gp last Fri. However my appointment is not until Wed so I am still very anxiously waiting. How great you found out there and then Ilove

Do you mind me asking how your lump felt to you? Mine feels ( I think but who knows!!) smooth and very solid so trying to give myself some hope that is might be a cyst. I am still breastfeeding my baby.

Hope your apt went ok Wishing

Reero I do not know either. Consuming my entire thoughts in this wait. Being a parent so changes everything. Hope the time goes quickly for you, in this wait.

ilovechocolates · 19/05/2017 21:12

@SummerRains literally felt like a smooth hard pea that I could move ie not fixed to skin or ribs. I had one lump but 2 big cysts and several smaller ones, so not sure what I was feeling. It had (I think) slightly changed to more of an oval but I could just have been imagining it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I posted earlier in this thread - found a hard lump under nipple. Was what I felt to be suspicious after reading up as very hard, not moveable, under nipple.

Had mammogram and ultrasound yesterday (went private as unfortunately had a terrible experience at NHS, I know it's not the hospital's fault, it's the bloody cuts!) and all is fine. It is scar tissue and a cyst due to blocked ducts.

Just telling you all this in case it helps calm anyone.

snapcrap · 20/05/2017 09:04

Oh and OP glad all fine with you and with others. Huge hugs to anyone who does not get such welcome news. Thankfully treatment has come far with breast cancer and the prognosis is often very positive.

GreenPolishToGo · 20/05/2017 11:52

Wishing and snapcrap that is great news.

SummerRains · 20/05/2017 20:14

Thanks Ilove... not sure if mine moves. Having an awful time with anxiety. Feels a long time to my apt! My dh is coming with me and the hospital have said I can take my baby too due to breastfeeding, as the baby refuses a bottle currently.

Great news wishing and Snapchat!

Wishingitwaswarm · 20/05/2017 21:21

My husband now knows how to do a breast exam. Glad he was there actually

Footle · 20/05/2017 21:26

OP , good to hear you are ok!

snapcrap · 21/05/2017 09:09

SummerRains

A good friend of mine found a hard lump while still breastfeeding. Her GP told her it was definitely cancerous before she was referred to hospital - it wasn't!! It was a blocked milk duct. I wanted to go and punch her doctor on the nose to be honest.

SummerRains · 21/05/2017 19:54

How awful Snapcrap. My Gp gave no reassurances but nothing worrying either. Just very factual. Plus a delay in referral due to cyberattack.
I have had some pain but mainly near my armpit and my lump is on the other side - which obviously makes me worry more. I am near the end of breastfeeding as my baby is fully weaned but relies on me for milk so do not think I can imagine it is a blocked duct as only feed 3-4 times a day now as baby has 3 meals plus snacks.

SummerRains · 24/05/2017 20:32

My date is I wasn't to the hospital. Was told I would have a mammogram, then ultrasound then a clinical examination. I stupidly told them I was breastfeeding so they decided to not do the mammogram. I had ultrasound then saw an advanced nurse practitioner who told me he ultrasound was clear. So she felt the lump and discharged me. I asked what the lump was but a small ultrasound did not show it was given no cause except it is not a cyst.

I asked about the pain and was told it was from carrying my baby.

SummerRains · 24/05/2017 20:33

It should have read "my update is I went"

And I do not know if this is good no all is well or what now. Frustratingly do not feel reassured. I have pain and a lump still.

MajorClanger123 · 24/05/2017 21:05

Hi summerrains
Sorry you've had to go to breast clinic, and sorry you've come away not feeling particularly reassured.

I had similar experience back in Feb of this year - lump, pain, registrar doctor examined me, sent me for ultrasound (too young at 38 for mammo) and told me absolutely nothing to worry about. I did ask, upon leaving the room, well what is the lump, to which she replied "not sure, probably an enlarged milk duct" (I've not breastfed for 4 years now).

After my initial relief, doubts started to creep back in and I started a whole thread about whether I should get a second opinion (not sure how to link but if you do a mumsnet search along the lines of 'breast lump second opinion' you'll find it). Lots of reassuring posts and, ultimately, I haven't sought a second opinion. I wondered why my lump couldn't be seen on ultrasound, or if indeed doctor had even felt it. I ended io requesting my clinic notes to try and reassure me.

I now take starflower oil for the stabbing pain (stronger GLA content than evening primrose) and it's almost disappeared, I still get some twinges every now and again. Lump still there, I religiously check my breasts each month, particularly lumpy area to make sure no changes there.

I will try and link to my thread in a new mssg so you can read for reassurance. Also, I visited breast clinic 2 years ago about same breast with no lump but underarm pain radiating into breast. Again, nothing found but I suspected carrying a heavy toddler on that side might have caused it. Stopped doing that and pain went away after some time (then I got the new stabbing type pain 18 months later Confused.

I think my left breast is my 'naughty' boob -always produced too much milk when breastfeeding, always the one to hurt or feel lumpy. Gah, bloody boobs!

MajorClanger123 · 24/05/2017 21:08

summerrains here is link to my other thread. I hope you find it reassuring / useful:

GreenPolishToGo · 24/05/2017 23:07

Summer I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling reassured. I would call the hospital and ask to speak to a nurse in the diganostic unit. When I was having treatment for breast cancer the nurses always told me not to hesitate to contact them if I was worried or needed something explained. And they were always lovely when I did call them.
