Eye Test might be nothing but slightly worried

Hello I had a eye test today, usual happened went in looked at the balloon thingy, but didnt do the puffy thing before i had my eye test.
Had eye test and when they shine the light into your eye and tell you to look at the ceiling whilst they check the back of your eye he spent along time on my right eye. He then went on his computer types something in and then said im just gonna check the right eye again.
After the test I was took in to another room to do another test where you have one eye covered and follow the red dot and then press a button as to how many green dots you see. When both eyes were done I went out to pick my glasses and then was called in to do the test again. I then came out and asked what it was for she said it's for perrefrial (excuse the spelling) vision. Then the lady said we will get your results if you want to come back in a bit then we will have the results. I went back and the optician hasn't checked them but said they would ring me if I needed to go back. I had a missed call and a text saying that I need to go back in to repeat the test. I haven't a clue what is going on.
I do get vision problems etc but I also have fibromyalgia so just put all the problems with sight head pain etc down to needing glasses and my fibro.

I've googled stuff so made things worse for myself. Any one else had one of these and had to have it repeated and what for.

So is it the peripheral vision test you've to do again? There may be certain areas in thr test where you missed a lot of flashes so they may need to check whether it's a one off or if there is a problem. Dd had one repeated but we think the rim of her glasses was slightly obstructing her vision on the first test so the second one went fine

butterfly198615 · 03/05/2017 14:55

Yep the peripheral test I have to do again. I did it twice this morning and have to do it again. Haven't had to do anything like this before.
I'm gonna go and have it done again in the morning and see what they say.

I have watched the test when dd/ds did it and from the other side there is a circle with dots filling it in sections. The test finishes when each dot has flashed. It sounds like you maybe missed a few in one section so they want to repeat it. What vision problems do you Have?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 03/05/2017 15:05

they may have another type of Visual Field Test to do, instead of the one you did today

you may have missed some points, or you may just not have been very good at it/inconsistent.

Ask if you can have a word with the optometrist and discuss what it was he was looking at/looking up

Quite often it can be something longstanding that just hasn't been noticed before, so try not to worry unnecessarily

IcelandicWarriors · 03/05/2017 15:09

I failed the same test twice on my left eye and have been refereed. My appointment is in June so I assume nothing bad. They did mention a slight change in my optic nerve too but I keep comparing my left and right eye and I don't feel like I have a loss in vision. I did Google but not really sure.

butterfly198615 · 03/05/2017 15:11

Yep with this one I had a patch over one eye and had to follow the red dot and when the green lights appear I had to press the clicker on how many green dots there were each time took about 5 mins for each eye.
I just need glasses for everyday reading computers etc. The optician said my vision is ok. When I mentioned about the pain and blurry ness I get in my eye and pain in my head he said "that's nothing to do with your vision, see a doctor of it gets worse" and then he said to the assistant to take me into a room for the test.
I just thought it was a bit weird when doing the test where they look in each eye with the light and tell you to look up, he asked to look in my right eye again.

I went to the opticians just a week or two ago and apparently I missed some of the dots with one eye, so I had to do it again (straight away). It turned out it was because I had my glasses on. I'm short-sighted and I'm sure I haven't been asked to do it with my glasses on before, but the person who did the test this time asked me to, as she said it would make sure they were only testing my peripheral vision and my actual short-sightedness wouldn't make a difference. When she called the optician out to say that I'd missed some of the dots, he said I shouldn't have had my glasses on as you're only supposed to keep them on if you're long-sighted. I did it again without glasses and they were happy with the result that time. It was the more short-sighted eye I'd missed the dots with, so the glasses would have made more of a difference.

butterfly198615 · 03/05/2017 15:17

Icelandicwarrior yeh I read about the optic nerve and I don't seem to have any loss of vision or not that I know off. Although when doing the test I couldn't see a bloody thing for a while when i swapped over to do the test on the other eye.

I failed the visual fields test and had to go back a week later, I think it is quite common, they wouldn't let me do it again on the same day though. When I did it the second time a week later they used a different instrument so the flashes were brighter and it was all OK, if I had of failed that one I would have been referred.
IIRC I failed it on my previous eye tests also and had to go back, I do dread the visual fields test Grin

butterfly198615 · 03/05/2017 16:09

Lightasthebreeze did they tell you what the test are for and who would they be referring you to ?.

I went to optician to get new contacts. She noticed that I had keratitis and after trying couple of things I was referred to hospital eye clinic to see eye doctor, who prescribed stronger antibiotics that seemed to help. Still need to see if keratitis is getting better.

I hadn't noticed any problems but actually I had had sore, red and dry eyes for a while. My vision in one eye was blurred but I hadn't noticed it when using normally both eyes. I also had slight headache all the time. I had so accustomed to those things that I thought my eyes are doing fine.

LightastheBreeze · 03/05/2017 16:22

They just said that if you miss the flashes and especially if the missed ones are concentrated in one place they have to refer you to the local hospital, I'm guessing to se the eye consultant where they look thoroughly and do more different visual tests to pinpoint if there is a problem and a blind spot in the vision. Was it called a Visual Fields test that you failed , it's where they flash lights and you have to click a button each time. My contrast is on the poor side apparently so the flashes have to be a bit brighter.

Google Visual Fields Test if that was it and it explains more about it and what it means.

Maudlinmaud · 03/05/2017 16:28

Hi op I have these tests all the time, carried out in hospital. They are so annoying and I usually get a headache after. The optician will explain why they are repeating the test and tell you what it's for. Usually they are brillant and picked up my condition using the device they use to look into the backs of your eye.

butterfly198615 · 03/05/2017 16:56

Yep Its visual field test I googled it and it mentioned about glaucoma and optic nerve damage, brain tumours , diseases etc.

Have to wait and see tomorrow and I'll ask more details about what the test is for and why it had to be repeated so many times etc

I was just told it was peripheral vision and it's seeing to the side of you x

OP posts:
LightastheBreeze · 03/05/2017 17:13

Really don't worry about it, Google always mentions tumours, cancer and terminal diseases, you would have had the glaucoma test on your eye test, the horrible one where they put air into your eye, it's probably that you just need to do the test on a different machine.

At least you are going tomorrow, I had to wait a week to do it again, I was more worried about my driving licence as I have to have fairly perfect vision in one eye as my other eye is so poor I don't really use it.

lazymum99 · 03/05/2017 17:39

Possibly the pressure behind your eye was on the high side and they need to check you haven't got glaucoma. I did a visual field test and my left eye came back as unreliable. I was having trouble focussing when doing that side because of extreme short sight. Never repeated it tho. Right eye was ok. My pressure is on the high end of normal range. They also mentioned something about a thicker than average cornea which makes the pressure test show higher than it really is.
I got quite nervous doing the visual fields test which probably made it more unreliable. Didn't want anything horrible to show up.

Maudlinmaud · 03/05/2017 20:33

Hi op, please don't worry and stay away from google. I went for a routine eye check about two years ago and something was found but it was handled really quickly. I was sent straight to eye casualty and then had a ct scan which confirmed my condition. I just want to reassure you that they do not hang around when they suspect something is going on. I saw a consultant that day. I hope it all goes ok for you and if you come back and update I'll be reading FlowersCake

loopylou6 · 04/05/2017 16:20

Hi op, I'm an optical adviser, like pp have said, it's probably that you missed a portion of the dots, there's a couple of reasons why, 1, you where not set up correctly to the machine, on the test performers side, there is a computer screen and we have to make sure to get your eye in the smallest of boxes to ensure you have every chance on being able to see the dots, if an inexperienced person was carrying out the test, theres a chance they didn't have you lined up properly.
Secondly, do you wear glasses all the time? If so, you should of worn them in the ocular test.
Please bare in mind that the optom wouldn't of let you go without referring you if he thought there was a problem, worst case scenario, and you're showing signs of glaucoma, you'll just be put on a yearly recall. Glaucoma if detected early is really very easy to treat.

butterfly198615 · 04/05/2017 18:09

Loopylou6 the first time I did the test the assistant said it messed up on her so I had to do it again she said they go funny from time to time. The second time the assistant only turned the machine on then left it to do what it does and then she did the same on the other eye. She wasn't paying no attention too the machine and her phone kept going off in her handbag that was beside me and she kept checking her phone , I then went out to chose my glasses and she said the optician will check the results and be in touch with me. I got a text to go back today, I went this morning and the assistant said it could be the machine went wrong or missed a few dots. And i went into the room and the woman went out whilst it did one eye and she came back in to do the other eye. She then said the optician that is in today wasn't the one who did my sight test , he's is in tomorrow. So she's going to have him look at it and ring me , said if I don't hear anything then the test was probably ok.
I didn't wear glasses on the test as I haven't had an eye test for a few years but my sight has got worse and been getting headaches so thought it would be best to go from an eye test.

Think I should of gone to Specsavers lol.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2017 18:13

Dd wears her glasses during the peripheral vision test (she is long sighted)

dementedpixie · 04/05/2017 18:15

The optician has always stayed during our tests and watched the screen. Very poor service if they aren't in the room or paying attention

loopylou6 · 04/05/2017 20:48

That is extremely poor. I would be making a complaint. The way you've been treated is disgraceful, I can't believe she was checking her phone Angry she should also of stayed in the room with you.
Did she turn the lights out?
It doesn't matter if it was a different optom, he would still know if the results where ok or not, as would she.
Where did you go for your sight test?

Maudlinmaud · 04/05/2017 20:54

What sort of headaches are you getting butterfly? If you don't mind me asking.

underneaththeash · 04/05/2017 21:10

Hi. Optom here.

We do visual field test on lots of people; over 60's, history of glaucoma, those with headaches, odd optic discs, anything unusual basically.
They have a steep learning curve, so in people who haven't done one before, the results are less reliable than in people that have. So, we often have to repeat them.

They are automated, so once you have set the patient up the machine carries out the test for you, we watch to make sure that you haven't moved your head back, but otherwise there is an eye tracker so there is no need to watch continually and if I do one, often I'm checking other things at the same time.

Sometimes patients do wear glasses for the test (often if they are long sighted) sometimes they don't. It completely depends on the type of glasses you wear, your age and your prescription.

Please don't worry, if there is an issue with the test the optometrist will call you.

loopylou6 · 04/05/2017 21:55

Hi under :) where I work we do autos on everyone, pressures over 30s and fields on everyone over 18, we also always stay in the room with the px to ensure eye doesn't move from box, and so px doesn't feel freaked by being alone.
You're a bloody good optom to carry out these tests yourself, ours never come out of their own testing room Grin
